Thanks! That’s kind of what I expected but wasn’t at all sure. Ah, the halcyon days of yore when air assault was the way of the future! Like a lot of good ideas, reality sort of got in the way I suppose.

Was it the A Shau valley where the 101st or someone got chewed up really bad at some point by aaa lining the sides of the valley.

That would be Lam Son 719 in Laos. We’re not talking about some small unit action here. People get and got “chewed up” all the time in a tactical actions. This is about a kind of large operational level action that then moots a certain type of approach from then on.

Don’t overemphasize the tactical @vyshka 😀

Oh, heh I wasn’t thinking the A Shau incident caused them to ditch air mobile doctrine, just an example where an air mobile op took quite a beating, but I was a lowly E4 so of course it is all tactical here :)

Has that been an actual doctrinal change though? The 101st has been going strong for five decades since then, and actually got to practice with all their toys in Desert Storm (though it is notable they picked a mostly empty desert for the area of operations).

One: none of this belongs in this thread, and I’m tapping out. Two: probably 10 doctrinal changes have occurred in the last 50; years there are multiple books on the topic and I suggest you check them out. The mere existence of a Division by a name does not mean a doctrinal change has not occurred. This is a great one:

Griner got released, so of course the discussion is now on how it’s a failure because someone else wasn’t.

But:

Meanwhile:

And also:

Of course Griner is black and “hates America” so getting her home at all is a loss because racism.

It does suck for Paul Whelan though, as he’s been held hostage by Russia since 2018 but isn’t a celebrity.

Why didn’t trump get him out? Or better yet, prevent him from being taken hostage?

Trump is on record as saying that he prefers people who don’t get captured.

Putin told him that Whelan was a bad guy.

Another Russian airfield hit:

“We have Vladivostok, we just need to get to Lisbon”

I guess a Eurasia without living humans is a kind of peace.

“Death solves all problems, no man, no problem.”
-Stalin

Weird vibes in this one.

Much “cops charging the guy they shot with assault, because he bled on their uniforms” vibes.

It seems that, unlike Trump, Putin is a drinker. Can we hope that this accelerates his physical decline?

He’s Russian and made it to 70, he’s probably got the other gene that means he will be a healthy head in a jar in 2250.

Those are some bad-ass doors, though. Kinda make the doorman look like an Oompaloompah though.
