Sounds like things really have gone quite poorly for Russia in Vuhledar.

Recent footage of a failed Russian assault near Vuhledar, Donetsk Oblast has become the latest point of neuralgia in the Russian information space.

Milbloggers latched onto the footage to launch several critiques of Russian military leadership. Russian milbloggers claimed that the same Russian commanders who oversaw highly attritional assaults by the 155th Naval Infantry Brigade on Pavlivka (near Vuhledar) in November 2022 are responsible for the effort to capture Vuhledar, and argued that the video illustrates that these commanders continue to make the same costly mistakes.[ One Russian milblogger specifically stated that Eastern Grouping of Forces commander Lieutenant General Rustam Muradov is responsible for Russian tactical failures around Vuhledar. Another Russian milblogger called for public trials to punish high-ranking officers who repeatedly fail on the battlefield and argued that Russian forces will continue to repeat the same mistakes if these commanders remain in their positions.

Footage shows these Russian forces engaging in highly dysfunctional tactics that are far more indicative of the fact that the 155th Naval Infantry Brigade is likely comprised of poorly trained mobilized personnel than of poor command. Russian milbloggers likely blamed Russian commanders to downplay the fact that the systemic poor training of Russian mobilized personnel will likely continue to result in similar tactical failures throughout Ukraine.

Yeah, I hope they’ve got their orderly withdraw figured out because they clearly can’t hold out much longer. Interesting with Russia dropping that bridge since that makes it likely they don’t think they’ll be pushing west from Bakhmut in this offensive.

Edit: and for the bridge near Odessa, really bad look for the Russian Navy that they have to resort to suicide drones to take out a bridge you should conceivably have been able to take out with a missile for the last twelve months. Doesn’t scream “far superior military” to me.

Joking aside, did it mention the control mechanisms? Torpedos tend to be wired guided at least for the initial part of their run. @Alistair they are able to send control commands to torpedoes I think as long as they are still connected to their wire. Of course I was Army, so my in-depth knowledge of torpedos comes from professors Clancy and Bond (Larry not James). So I could be talking out my ass here. I should have added once the torp acquires the target it could guide itself the rest of the way.

Sure they were, that’s how they hit their targets.

I think the difference between a drone and a torpedo would probably be the speed and operating time, and whether they were carrying explosives. The suicide drone would have explosives, but probably designed to just drive around and loiter until it was needed to kill something.

Torpedos have been steerable since WW1. Remote control is another issue.

Best torpedo story I know it’s that we used to have nuclear torpedoes, but their range was such that you would always be within the kill zone of your own weapon if you fired it.

I wouldn’t think the sobs had anything afloat that would’ve been worth that unless you got within range of their boomers.
