That’s where I’m at. I think the pause was a convenient diplomatic fiction for Russia to re-tool their approach. Plan A, be good-guy liberators, has failed hard. I suspect they were just buying time to switch to Plan B, shell everything into oblivion and inflict mass civilian casualties until Ukraine surrenders to stop the slaughter.

My overall feeling, looking at my completely amateur crystal ball is that the " best " (notice the bold quotes there) outcome for everyone involved is Russia getting a fast and good enough foothold east of the Dnieper to feel that they can get an East - West partition at the negotiating table.
West joins EU, East turns into “NovayaRossiya” or whatever.
I don’t think Russia can ever get the west half under control, but once they are entrenched in the east everyone will be either eager themselves or pressured by others to end the hostilities ASAP.
