Why NATO? I’m blaming Putin, CNN, and QT3 in that order.

At least nobody is blaming Biden.

I blame Canada.

I’m blaming V.I. Lenin. If it’s good enough for Putin, it’s good enough for me.

Tim_N got it.

I think it was mentioned earlier, but if not Russia has moved to close some of the remaining independent news outlets.

Now this:

Note that this is the top story on the front page of TASS. (Which I gather is maybe the CNN of Russia? The most bland of the major outlets? Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.)

On March 4, the Duma will consider the issue of criminal punishment for fakes about the actions of the RF Armed Forces

According to State Duma deputy Sergei Boyarsky, it is necessary “to take a step towards cleaning up the Internet from fakes, which everyone was tired of even before the operation”

ST. PETERSBURG, March 1. /TASS/. The State Duma at an extraordinary meeting on Friday will consider the issue of bringing to criminal responsibility for disseminating disinformation about the actions of the Russian Armed Forces in military operations. State Duma deputy Sergei Boyarsky announced this to journalists on Tuesday.

“Now a large-scale digital discrediting campaign is being waged against us. An emergency meeting - let’s say extraordinary - of the State Duma will be held this Friday, at which we will consider the issue of bringing to justice those who spread disinformation about the actions of our armed forces in any military operations, because now <…> it is very important,” Boyarsky said.

“We know perfectly well how our current, so to speak, main enemy is able to work with fakes. And this is by no means someone in Ukraine, these are people across the ocean, they have colossal experience,” the deputy added. According to him, it is necessary “to take a step towards cleaning the Internet from fakes, which everyone was tired of even before the operation.” “Thousands of false reports mislead not only the inhabitants of our country, but also the inhabitants of Ukraine, which, of course, is very sad,” Boyarsky stated.

On February 28, the head of the State Duma Committee on Security and Anti-Corruption, Vasily Piskarev, announced the plans of parliamentarians to impose liability for disinformation about the actions of the Russian Armed Forces during the military special operation in Ukraine. He later clarified that criminal liability for misinformation could reach 15 years in prison.

State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin previously informed that an additional meeting of the lower house would be held on March 4, at which the proposals of the Russian government to support citizens would be considered.

Man, straight from the 60s.

Also, let the Russian apparatus taste some of its own medicine. Most of this stuff they are complaining about is actually, you know, the real news. But if there’s really a concerted disinformation campaign aiming to destabilize the regime… well, sucks for them, I guess?

Also just saw on TASS, which is remarkably fast about reporting on new sanctions since clearly they are trying to focus on the “unjust pain the west is inflicting”, that Apple is no longer selling products or shipping to distributors in Russia and has closed down Apple Pay.

Ah, this would be AMAZING

Would need to be implemented very fast (like tomorrow) and publicized using every single tool (you need to reach frontline soldiers).

But it’s a really good idea, given the stuff that we are hearing.

I was saying we should do this very thing way upthread. Good to see.

This was a good post, hadn’t thought of it that way. Imaginary like button pressed.

Are you sure that they didn’t get in a Jeep and go back to start and grab a tow vehicle which they got stuck in a creek and are now walking back to the start?

The BBC diplomatic correspondent writes about leaving Ukraine:

I imagine a lot of these roadblocks would melt away in the face of a tank platoon. On the other hand, maybe a few NLAWs could fall of the the back of a truck on the way to the front?

It seems pretty clear that any puppet government will hold absolutely little legitimacy in the eyes of the population.

Which is the recipe for an insurgency.

It makes every village an obstacle and if it means each one requires heavy equipment to take and clear that’s probably not going to be thrilling to Russian planners.

Zelensky addresses the UN:

Plus, all those strained supply lines are going to have to go through or near a lot of these villages.

We said the world needed more poutine.

Like. :)
