Here’s a great, fantastic thread on that very subject. And this is one of those clip and save threads that everyone who uses social media should be aware of.

We have all of us on twitter been outrage farmed.

There are accounts out there that farm outrage like a commodity – Palmer Report, for instance.

Know how it works and what they’re doing.

Take a look at the Oryx twitter feed. He’s despairing at trying to keep up: video footage of a line of what look like abandoned anti-aircraft personnel carrier type things.

I like your take. I can imagine how satisfying that would be for the Chinese to ponder, but I’m not sure how excited they would be about adopting another mad king. As far as I understand, the North Korean relationship isn’t a purely happy one. You would think they’d prefer to have a smart and capable partner.

No ill will taken! With how hectic my morning is and with how fast this thread is moving, an hour is like an eternity, hah! But that’s why I find the source to go along with a statement helpful, I don’t have to scroll back through a super busy thread to try to figure out where it’s coming from and if it’s reliable. :) Is it old news? New news? Old debunked news? New sketchy news? New reliable news?! Aaaaah!

I’m having this vision of this old-tyme farmer chewing on a stick of grass…“Ayup, that’s my outrage farm. Been real good harvests these past few years. You can see the current crop is thick and full - this will be a record harvest, i think.”

So if Russia starts committing wide scale atrocities, wholesale slaughter and execution of non-combatants, do we sit idly by militarily, or do we get involved?

Stand by, obviously - if you mean military involvement. No two nuclear powers will wage war with one another. If they do, all bets are off.

The former. We aren’t going to get militarily involved in a war with Russia over Ukraine. Over Poland, yes. Over the Baltic states, yes. Over Ukraine, no.

We really do need the Let’s Play Global Thermonuclear War thread.

Shit got real: (sorry, saw it on Reddit Disc Golf)

I can’t believe that snowboarders and skateboarders haven’t condemned the actions taken by the Russian government, and if they have, then I can’t believe that no one has told us about it here.

They probably did, just with the age of this crowd nobody is on those subreddits.

(ow, my knees)

i mean, it’s just hanging there…

It should be “Belorussian warship”, but close enough!

“Standing With Putin is really big value!”

I guess these Sinclair-ish twitter bombing campaigns are all the rage now. There was a similar spam campaign last week, supporting the owners in the current MLB lockout, posted from dozens of different accounts, all word for word exactly the same.

from what I’ve read, Wargaming is belorussian and are the publishers and producer, though the actual developer (Lesta Studio), is based in Saint Petersburg (and owned by wargaming). so…both could work?

Sure, but you missed the part that Belorussia is a landlocked country.

Putin’s EU membership drive continues.

This is a deal knell for Russian aviation. Even internal flights are dead - there’s no alternate to Sabre as a reservation system. It’s used around the globe.

I guess the defining question is, if Ukraine isn’t a member of the EU, and isn’t a member of NATO, and we don’t have any sort of treaties or co-protection or co-prosperity agreements with them, then how can we step in and fight Russia on their behalf while NOT stepping in to any number of other conflicts around the globe? What makes Ukraine more special than Ethiopia or Eritrea, for example?

Proximity and therefore threat. I mean, if Russia takes Ukraine they’re conquering right up to NATO borders in that region. If you’re Poland, you’re going to be more willing to consider getting involved in this situation than Somalia.

EDIT: I’m not saying this is likely to happen, just my answer to what might make Ukraine different than other conflicts for the US, NATO, and the EU.
