We’ll likely see food price hikes which will be uncomfortable in the US/Europe, but devastating elsewhere. This will likely cause another Arab Spring like uprising somewhere.

The food effects are going to happen just from invasion and Ukraine daring to fight back , not sanctions.

This might also help the Republicans in the fall, unless Biden can somehow put this economic pain as part of a solidarity to support freedom and fight fascism, and then tie Trumpy Republicans into Russia.

Russia’s lead forces have been “decimated” and it is not inevitable that it will succeed in taking over Ukraine, the head of the UK’s armed forces has said.

Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, chief of the defence staff, said that Moscow had “got itself into a mess” and that its invasion was “not going well”

Radakin said that the Kremlin had lost more troops in a week than the UK did in 20 years in Afghanistan.

The morale of soldiers had been knocked so badly that some had abandoned the convoy destined for Kyiv to camp in the forest, he said.

Radakin said that a no-fly zone over Ukraine would escalate conflict. “The advice that we as senior military professionals are giving our politicians is to avoid doing things that are tactically ineffective and definitely to avoid doing things that tactically might lead to miscalculation or escalation,” he added.

“The no-fly zone would not help. Most of the shelling is coming from artillery, most of the destruction is coming from artillery, it’s not coming from Russian aircraft.

“If we were to police a no-fly zone, it means that we probably have to take out Russian defence systems and we would have Nato aircraft in the air alongside Russian aircraft, and then the potential of shooting them down and then that leads to an escalation.”

Military people keep pointing out that the real damage being done is by Russian rockets and artillery and missiles, not the Russian Air Force — which seems to have been effectively countered by Ukraine’s air defenses — yet media people keep shouting about a no-fly-zone. I think the US DoD assessment from yesterday estimated that Ukraine still possessed most of their Air Force.

Edit: Ukraine is claiming two more Russian aircraft shot down tonight.
