At least British fishermen are safe this time!
That’s not what the people on the ground report. And the Guards 155th Naval Infantry don’t suffer 30%+ casualties in a “probing attack”.
I bet the Tsar’s officers kept saying the same thing in 1917. Probably using a similar quality of logic: You admit to having literally zero evidence, and then arrive at a definite conclusion.
Russian state TV; “we’re advancing centimetres per day.”
Well, it depends on the scale of the map, doesn’t it? Three centimeters could be miles, I tell you, miles!

Wait: The was a screencap from Russia-1, which is state-owned. Then they went and called that guy a ‘War Correspondent’. But I thought this wasn’t a war. Does that mean the state has to arrest itself?
Apparently they don’t have enough shovels:
And the pro-Russian commentators aren’t keen on the supply situation, either:
(… but why zinc?)
Nitpick away, my faulty memory, thought that was earlier in the war. You’ll agree by 1917 they were pretty much only good for holding a quiet section of the line.

I think coffins are lined with zinc for preservation purposes.
EDIT: Meant to reply to ooomalley, Strollen.
Zinc got me curious also.

Well, maybe half of them, anyway.
Well, as long as we’re nitpicking: let’s also remember that in mid-1917 the French army was also only capable of defense. WWI was a shitshow all around.
Russia has not yet begun to fight! When they get serious they’ll be losing 10,000 a day!

And they’ll do it naked. NAKED I SAY!

Makes it much easier for those probing attacks to become penetrating attacks.
At least that will solve some of their logistics problems!

This is a pretty grim picture of what’s to come for civilian life in Ukraine this winter. Interestingly, I reached the same idea that Tyler ends up bringing up at the end. I think Biden should publicly put supplying ATACMS on the table and say it’ll happen if Russia follows through with raining ballistic missiles on Ukrainian cities.
On the other hand, I haven’t really considered if these Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure might actually be justified on account of the way Ukraine is dressed…

It does take two to tango. If Ukraine hadn’t built those cities and power plants, Russia wouldn’t be lobbing missiles at them.

I’m just read this. I agree that Biden should say that if attacks on civilian infrastructure continue, ATACMS will be sent to Ukraine.

True. American troops weren’t effective because their skill, equipment, or training were really out of the ordinary. Rather they were the only troops naive enough in 1917 to think that jumping out of a trench and running across no man’s land while being shot at by machine guns and artillery wasn’t suicidal.
My grandfather was an artilleryman in WWI he was so impressed by his regimental commander that he named my dad after him. Thanks to social media, no Russian soldier will be as naive about the state of the war as our doughboys. It is also difficult to imagine many Russian conscripts being so impressed with their leadership as my grandfather.
