The Surface Laptop - Microsoft makes a MacBook Air killer

People did buy it and were angry that no one makes it anymore.

S Windows is locked to Edge and Bing :/

Unless Google and FF put their browsers in the Store.

You can then use them if that happened, but I understand that 10S will always default to Edge.

I’m using Edge on my Surface Book. No real complaints.

I have a number of websites that will flat out not work with Edge, including DLINK’s page for wireless/wired security cameras.

I gave them both a serious go when I moved to Win 10, but over time there were too many issues. Compatibility with Edge and just not being very good with Bing.

It’s improved quite a bit over two years. It’s finally in state where I can use it as my default browser. And you can switch the search engine to Google (although not the Ask Cortana sidebar part).

There’s also word that Redstone 3 (near the end of the year) will finally split Edge off to the Store. You won’t be able to uninstall it, but this way they can update it more frequently. As it is, it only gets security updates every month, and non-security updates every major Windows 10 release.

But… why?
I mean, seriously. It couldn’t even run android apps then, right?

What was the use case for a chromebook that cost that much?

I try edge every once in awhile, but yeah it’s all about compatibility problems which I just assumed would be worked out in a few years, but it’s still a problem. Why would I ever settle for a browser that’s not supported by a number of my devices? It doesn’t matter if it’s faster, more efficient, safer or whatever they claim… it won’t work with some of my basic online functions/sites.

So, why would I want Windows S?

Does it have some advantage over Win10 Pro? Cause they are allowing free upgrades to Win10 pro through 2018.

The irony is that Edge already has more users than Mac Safari.

If you’re into bizarre yet kinky techo bdsm, maybe you’d get off on pretending Microsoft is your mistress commanding you to use an inferior browser.

You wouldn’t, but maybe your teachers would, so that you would stop downloading porn during class.

Only if the class is “Introductory hacking of computers to show porn”

That’s because the Air has become the budget model. It’s their thickest laptop at this point, and not much lighter than a pro.

It’s literally impossible to get Windows 10 S unless you buy a computer which comes with it.

So, the answer as to why you might “want” it is:

  • You want to save $30 off the price of the computer (which tends to be the price difference in the same model which comes with either 10 or 10 s)
  • You didn’t buy it anyway and it was provided by your school
  • You’re an IT admin who needs to test it for whatever school you might be configuring it for
  • You want a Surface Laptop and intend to use the free upgrade to Pro

That is extraordinarily unlikely. Windows S is another abortion just like Windows RT and Windows 8.1 with Bing. In a year it will be gone and you will be hard pressed to remember it ever existed, until MS tries this same failed bullshit for a fourth time. People don’t want castrated operating systems.

If that were the case, way does chrome sell?

Because it runs on super cheap systems. It’s basically a replacement for the netbook market.

I have a Chromebook, but it’s not a laptop replacement. It’s just good for doing web browsing, email, and office tasks.

Now, for a large portion of the time, that’s probably all many folks need. And that’s cool. But it’s only worth around $200.

If I’m spending over a grand, then that machine needs to do everything.

Yes, but his point is that Windows S runs on super-cheap systems too, and OEMs are making them. But ChromeOS’s limitations are compensated by advantages; they can’t get viruses and kids can’t destroy the OS because it’s is read-only, data is all stored in the cloud, and they’re highly manageable. These things make them very attractive to schools.

MS is doing something with management in Windows S, but the OS isn’t read-only and it’s still Windows.

The biggest issue is that Windows S can’t run chrome (the browser). If they can figure that out, then it has a chance on the low end, especially within schools, where things like Teams and Minecraft Education will be really popular.
