I really don’t get the people who must have all achievements or unlocks. I’ll play medic a while and get the Blutslaugher pretty easily, I might one day end up with the Kritzkrieg, I’ll never ever have the Ubersaw… and somehow the world will go on. Frankly people that feel the need to game the system or cheat just for some unlocks is beyond sad.
Goldrush is a bloodbath. But I like it well enough. I could only play about 45 minutes last night so I’ll save an in depth analysis until I’ve played it a few weeks but so far I like it.
What bothers me is that the achievements encourage teamwork-hostile play (e.g. ubering a scout). If I do want to get the achievements, I either have to game the system on a private server or be a jackass on a public server. There’s no good way to do it. It’s just lousy design, which surprises me from Valve.
If they had implemented a BF2/2142 style system, where just normal play earns you experience to unlocks, it would be far better.
But before the achievements stuff like that happened on pubs all the time. You’ve never played on a server where the heavy or scout just runs around melee or the medic is off ubering the snipers? It’s not like Valve pulled this stuff out of their ass, people always play stupid. My point is it’s not the end of the world if you never get all the achievements or unlocks. You don’t have to grind or game the system if you don’t want to. Medics with no unlocks are just as viable as those that have them, at the end of the day it’s just a slightly different style of play.

My experiences from last night continue today, which is to say that most 12-man teams I’ve played on have had about 2-4 medics – more than usual, but not a crazy amount.
I haven’t seen too much catassing, outside of people going for the achievement where you have to uber a few different people at once. It’s a little annoying to charge into battle with an uber and then have it vanish for no particular reason, but I imagine that’s going to be a temporary issue.
I see a lot of chatter about dedicated grind servers, which is where I imagine most of the achievement whoring will take place. Two weeks from now, I don’t think it’s going to be a major issue on public servers.
Sure, but then Valve wasn’t explicitly encouraging it with their game design. Now they are.
I’m not talking about me getting the achievements, I barely play medic, I’m saying it was a bad idea to implement it in this way. I do not see a positive side to this method of getting unlocks.

An update has been released to remove the console commands.

Did it roll back the achievements as well?
EDIT: The word on the 1UP boards is that rollback did occur. One person suggested that people who didn’t use the console command got to keep their achievements, but it’s not confirmed.

I read that without the “a” in front. And liked it.
Mouse-stabbing: v. to back stab an opponent with the greatest advantage against you.
It goes in the TF2 Glossary before “Spyro” and “Snipwhore”.

Only people who used console commands got rolled back, I believe.
Some people who used console commands and also botted themselves to a high number of medic hours played were also untouched.
Also, WoW really has killed PC Gaming.

I can see clearly now, the rain is gone.
When I have a medic on my team with an Ubercharge ready running around shooting people with a syringe gun, it’s a problem.
Seriously, Valve, did you guys turn into George Lucas? Some of these achievements say you did, because they certainly weren’t made to encourage teamwork.
Anyone know if there are any trade-offs for the Ubersaw, or is it really just a better weapon? If it’s the latter, seriously, what the fuck, Valve?

For some reason, my one man hysteria train further up-thread failed to collect any passengers. It is still boarding, if you’re interested.

I believe the only drawback of the ubersaw is that it has a slightly slower swing speed.
A medic player who has these items unlocked is simply stronger than a medic player who doesn’t. Not only does he have more flexibility, but I’m of the opinion that the new syringe gun and bonesaw are flat out superior to the old ones.
This is really going to suck for competitive play / competitive players.

I did not use the console commands and still have my 5 medic achievements.

Thor’s balls, what a clusterfuck play is on the servers now.
I understand all the business reasons for adding unlockables and achievements, but the servers I play on, which normally have team-minded people interested in winning the map first and achievements second, are completely unplayable. Be a medic or die. Watch Dustbowl get rolled in 4 minutes. 1/3 to 1/2 the teams are medics. And all their interested in doing is whatever it takes to get the other weapons.
I’m sure it will settle down a bit once all the worst offenders have them, and fully expect the late-comers to be screwed trying to find a heavy who will punch people just because the medic wants another achievement. But criminy, 4 servers and its all the same. I hope you saved off your pre-medic-gluttony-of-achievements stats.
36 Achievements: Impressive. But Too many.
3 new weapons at once: Too many.
How about 13 achievements + 1 weapon at a time?
And maybe every classes new achievements all at once, but in smaller bites. Heck, 4 achievements for each class at a time, or something like that.
Hmmm i never used any of the commands, didn’t have achievements, but somehow lost 3 of my old achievements. Around the World, Head of the class and another. :\
Unless you lost Sentry Gunner, that’s not a big deal, is it?
I heartily agree with your statements and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
I know a few people who used the unlock command and their stats haven’t been rolled back.
