It’s really sad that most of their negative feedback has been about achievements coupled with unlocks. I can only think of 1 unlock that is hands-down better than the original weapon, the ubersaw.

The rest? not usually better, usually just different. Yet people feel they’re at a disadvantage when other players have the unlocks and they don’t. these people are dumb.

God I hope people don’t ruin this. Weapon drops in an FPS sound so awesome.

I can understand the irritation, because there’s 1) the impression (for new players) that the unlock is better, even if it isn’t that case, and 2) arguably, the choice of play style is and advantage, because it allows you customize the character to fit your strengths.

Also, the argument goes both ways: if the unlocks aren’t better, just different, then why prevent players from using them right away? I personally love the sense of accomplishment that’s marked by getting an unlocked weapon (feels way better than just getting the achievement), but I can see the argument going to other way.

It also sounds like they may still have some achievement based unlocks, but also provide other ways to get them? I personally think it’s a good idea to trickle the new weapons out, so that new players have time to get used to the base set before being overwhelmed with choices, so we’ll have to see what exactly they’re planning.

I’m really curious to see what they’re planning. So far, I think they’re saying the right things about being careful with not changing too much too fast.

Edit: I’d like a per-use leveling rewards system. As a Pyro, if I get a lot of reflected rockets? Let me optimize my flamethrower for that. If I get a lot of flare gun kills, give me the option of modifying my flare gun. These would still include some sort of pre-set tradeoffs, but maybe the bonus / penalty I have available depends on my performance.

I just wish that the achievements didn’t prioritize odd and detrimental play. Linking the unlockable weapons to these achievements just exacerbates the problem. Giving medics achievements for not deploying their uber or using it on scouts is just an example. I have to admit, I don’t understand the thinking behind this.

Everybody can play the way they want, but giving rewards for it just makes me wonder.

Yeah, I can agree with that. I’m surprised that people doing that aren’t just on achievement farm servers though.

I trust Valve more than most…

Anyone see these beauties?

So much fun stuff there, but the TF2 ones at the top are very cool.

Excuse me, I have to see if my printer has color ink left…

The Sniper update details start.

I, as a sniper player, am pumped.

I’m sorry to hear you have Asperger’s.

Hmm… I wonder if it’ll be an actual pin effect, or just a more generic stun or slow on hit.

From the wording I’d say it only pins you to the wall on death. A normal hit will just have an arrow sticking out of you. No stun or slow.

Hmm sounds like a sniper rifle with a faster charging max power shot. One second charge. Not that the regular sniper shot doesn’t already insta-kill my medic anyhow…

I’m betting it’s got a longer time between shots and doesn’t function as a hitscan weapon now, maybe has an arc. Somehow, it’ll be harder to hit with.

Still, I’m diggin’ it.

That’s right.

Robin beat you, Erik.

Those are excellent. I am completely useless and likely unable to actually make them though, which is a blow. I would love to have a paper pyro next to my monitor.

The sniper update looks snazzy. The apparent trade off between quicker charge and (presumably) arced/non-instant fire seems like a good one, and one that will perhaps encourage close-in fighting. I play sniper occasionally, so it’ll be a refreshing change. It will also mean lots of absolutely dire snipers that I get to set on fire with gay abandon when I play pyro. I might even get my taunt kill achievements!

I’m very, very eager to see what the machine gun upgrade is. It’s so hard to be effective with that gun… I rely on crits to do any killing with it. Right now you’re better off to take out your machete.
