It certainly seems like the drop rate is “funky”. I’ve played 6 hours since the update and haven’t gotten anything at all. Frustrating, since I get to watch all the neat toys used against me.
And just in case everybody isn’t reading the server thread, my server’s up now:
8.6.15.35:27015
Go try and break it or something. I won’t be around tomorrow during the day, but I will be playing games in the evening.
I’ve been spending most of my time in the Gamers With Jobs servers, the public one of which is available at 68.232.163.186:27015. Several of the servers named below are good too, though, and I will be sure to get some time on frank austin’s server with y’all.
I have, like, twice your items and i have played 2 hours, instead of 25.
This seems to be my experience as well. Weirdly, it seems like there are almost ‘cold servers’, where you can play for two hours and see no one get an unlock - or only one person. It’s frustrating to have so little idea what’s going on. On the other hand, I’m busy learning the game, and discovering how fun it is to set people on fire or lead them into my sticky-bomb traps, so that makes up for it.
Yeah, I’ve played at least 8 hours since the update, haven’t gotten anything, not even a duplicate item. So last night I logged on to an idle server out of fustration for ~3 hours, still nothing.
I just played for like 3 more hours on Frank’s server, having awesome fun as a heavy - got a razorback five seconds into the server, and after that, nothing. This unlock method kind of sucks.

same thing happened to me yesterday, quatoria. i logged on and almost immediately got that sniper shield, but haven’t gotten anything since.
I just played for three hours and in the first 20-30 minutes stuff was dropping left and right (but not for me) and then… nothing.
In theory I like the new system since it got me playing again… but I would like a little for my effort.
I played another couple hours, managed to get a cloak and dagger. Haven’t had a good map to try it on.

I’ve played for many hours since the update and all I’ve gotten is a duplicate Natasha.
This really kinda irks me, as I actually had unlocked all other unlockables through the acheivement system without ever resorting to an achievement farming server.
A) I earned everything legit, and under the new system all that nets me is a high chance of getting a ton of useless duplicates.
B) I really want to get these new items, but have no idea how to make that happen. “Play TF2?” I’ve been doing that for a while now and have gotten squat. At this point even if I do luck out and get something, odds are it’s just going to be a dupe.
C) I don’t understand the weapon-trading thing so well. Who is going to trade the new stuff for old stuff at this point? If the goal is to provide a way to handle dupes, here’s a thought - don’t give people dupes in first place.
Another couple of hours of play and still nothing. It’s stupid and irrational, but this is really turning me off TF2. I don’t even play snipers and spies much, and I probably wouldn’t even if I got the items, but it’s still strangely disheartening.

Just unlock everything already and stop trying to make a fucking mmo out of this game.
Yeah, after a couple days without unlocking anything except the things I already have, I’m getting bummed on the new system, too. Since it’s totally random, the chances of you getting something you want seem to get narrower and narrower. I’m over it.
It’s the perfect system. If I had a complaint, it would be that the drop rate is a little high. One weekend of heavy play and I have all the new stuff except the ambassador. Once I get that, the drops will be meaningless except for the rare hats.
Warhammer Online had a good solution. If you run an event and receive squat, the game remembers it. Next time you run the event, you have a higher chance of receiving something good.
I’d love to see something similar for TF2’s random drops. At least you feel like you’re making progress that way. If you’re going absolutely insane, remember that achievement farming is an (easy) option still.
I got a bunch of stuff for Snipers and Scouts and Spies - none of which I ever play. Ever.
But, I like the system, if there has to be a system (seriously, if you want to add more gear for the classes, just make them available to everybody) I’m glad it rewards actual playing…randomly. And not those achievment farm servers.

I spent a good chunk of time playing TF2 this weekend. Looking through my screenshots folder, which autosaves at the end of each round, I have 35 MVPs. I’d say I get MVP 80% of the time, so I’ve probably played in the neighborhood of 50 matches over 12 hours from Friday through Monday.
I’ve gotten zero spy or sniper items.
