I’ve managed to get the razorback, and then duplicate items from there. I don’t really mind this system however because when I look at the spy and sniper achievements, I have to wonder how on earth I could achieve those - I’m pretty crap as both.
Speaking of achievements, I am fairly bummed about the fact that some of my medic achievements got reset, namely the one where you have to kill 50 scouts with the needlegun thingo, and the one killing 50 medics with the bonesaw. Both reset, which is crap considering I was incredibly close to achieving both. Anyone have any ideas why this happened?
I’m not sure I’ll ever understand people who plays games for something other than the actual gameplay.
BjB was joking and part of keeping the game fresh is trying new strategies and ways of playing, which is what the new equipment makes possible - so the two are very related.
I know millions kept playing the same map on Counterstrike for years on end, but most people move on, when a games doesn’t evole/expand.
One weekend of heavy play, and I have three duplicates of the ‘dead ringer.’ Oh, and a razorback. And two sandviches. I just want the goddamn huntsman. Stupid unlocking system. All I really want is a cloak and dagger and a huntsman. Well, and a backburner, but I can get that with achievements.
I’ve got both of the spy watches and I’m very impressed with them. I thought that the Cloak and Dagger really changed the way you play spy, and that’s true… but the dead ringer forces you to play radically different (you can’t cloak at will, you need to feign death in order to cloak and that requires being hit by bullets).
I’ll probably stick with C&D, but I definitely plan to use the ambassador when I find it. there are too many times that i’m trailing behind someone and not quite able to get close enough for a backstab.
There are definitely pluses to the new unlock system. I got the Cloak & Dagger when I was playing as a pyro, so I thought I’d give the spy another shot to see if I could find out what it is that people liked about the class, and see if I could graduate from “world’s worst spy” to maybe somewhere in the bottom 10%.
It took a little doing to figure it out (I still sometimes forget to uncloak before trying to fire / backstab, but the C&D is amazing, and has actually made the spy a class I can use! The problem was that with the previous cloaking, I could never do things quickly enough. I’d cloak, then dick around with my disguises panel for a couple minutes and my cloak would run out while I was still thinking about what I wanted to do next. The C&D lets me sit in one place and think about what to do next, which seems to me to be a much better way to learn how to play the spy.
In my opinion, the C&D should be the standard beginner spy gear, because it slows you down, so it makes it easier to figure out what you’re doing wrong. Before, I’d run into enemies and just die, without figuring out why. Now, I realize that I was never planning ahead enough. I was losing before I ever saw an enemy. But I never would’ve been able to realize that because I always died so quickly I couldn’t figure it out.
So, Unlocking snafu’s aside, I think they did a great job with the new unlocks. They really seem to change the way the game is played, and definitely opened a new door for me to play a class I couldn’t ever touch before. And if they’d kept the old unlock system I never would’ve known it, because I never would’ve unlocked anything with the spy.
My two favorite (and best) classes in TF2 are spy and sniper, so this update is a lot of fun. Spy is probably my favorite class to play, but it is also the most frustrating to play.
I miss the days of the friendly fire servers from the beta… spies were unstoppable.
Did you reset your stats? That also clears out partially-completed achievements.
I think the whole “find item” system is actually fine in concept, just that it’s not working as intended. It’s supposed to be random, but not to the degree of “one player will find everything in less than 3 hours and another one will find one item in 12 hours.” It should be pretty regular, and apparently that still isn’t happening.
As for me, outside of my first two hours playing after the patch, it has been fairly regular. I have a few more hours in, and a good number of items found. It’s turning out to be every half hour to an hour that I find something. I think if everyone was reliably having that experience, there’s be a lot less whining about it.
What I think is funny is that it did nothing at all to prevent the “let’s all play as just these two classes” syndrome. Yeah, you can get the new sniper and spy items by playing any class, but as soon as you get one of the new toys you switch to it to play with it. As a result, most of the games I’ve played have had way more snipers and spies than usual. I’m trying to break out of my “always play medic” role here, but it’s hard when our team of 10-12 player might have one more medic on it at best.
One medic if you’re lucky. A lot of the teams I’ve been on lately have had something in the neighborhood of five snipers, three spies, and MAYBE one heavy, pyro, engineer, medic, and scout. If lucky.

As a primarily Pyro player, I rather enjoy the increase in Spy and Sniper players, but mainly when they’re on the opposing team.
I think the main problem is exactly this. It’s not working that way for many people. I played this weekend and all I got for about five hours of play was a Sandwich and a Flare Gun.
I already had the Flare Gun. :-(
I played about 4 hours this weekend (I think) and I got a Jarate and Sandvich. (Both new to me) As well as earning the Pyro Axe via achievements.
People are making a lot of “Valve is turning TF2 into an MMO” jokes but I think the system would have been much better if they incorporated actual MMO tropes like a drop system.
Still have the random drops like now but also if say I kill a spy who has the Dead Ringer equipped I should get x% chance of him dropping it for me. That way it feels like I’m at least working toward something.
Got all the Sniper gear and The Ambassador, which is pretty disappointing. Three headshots to take out a sniper! THREE!
Spy Watches want.
Somebody in a game I was playing claimed the ambassador has a greater range->greater damage effect on the headshots, but I’ve no idea if that’s true or not.
Keep in mind that at close range the Ambassador does less damage with a headshot than it does with a body shot. Less than a regular pistol body shot, too.
From Gerzun on the Steam forums:
Hmm…With those numbers, the Ambassador seems pretty worthless, unless I’m missing something.
