Not really wanting to argue, just looking to clarify. There are two different factors for me. First, in one week I have received two items, and that was with excessive playing and server idling. Without idling, I would be down to 0 items still (both came from an idle server). I don’t have the time to dedicate to TF2 for hours upon hours each day. I usually only get to play one or two hours a day if that. However, this system is based on amount of time played, rewarding those who play the most. So at my rate, I will likely receive very little at all and be denied access to new shiny toys.

Secondly, this is also about enjoying the new items to fill a gap in playstyle. I earned my pyro weapons through achievements (mind you I am not a fan of this system either) within two days of normal play. When I received the backburner, I fell in love with it immediately, and it opened up an entirely new play style that was more suited to my style (ninja ambushing pyro). I used to adore playing a medic, but the new weapons filled a gap with a different class and I now play it almost exclusively.

Where I am going with this is, some of the spy items looks like they would further compliment my style. I am not the best spy around, and I would love to have the watch that keeps you cloaked indefinitely so long as you monitor your movement. I have a feeling this would help me quite a bit in learning and enjoying the class. Not to mention, who doesn’t want a jarate to throw at people at least once for fun?

Casual players are being denied the chance to fully enjoy the playstyles these weapons unlock. It is up to luck, and when you can only play a short time each day, you likely won’t be getting many toys. The solution? Idle servers while you go about your day, come home, and enjoy your new toys that let you have some fun.

By idling today, I have received five items. By playing normally for an hour or two each day in normal servers, I receive nothing. Why shouldn’t I idle again?

Do you receive unlocks specific only to the role you’re playing? For example, you’ll only unlock Scout items while playing a Scout.

Nah, the drops are completely random and unrelated to what you are doing or what class you are playing. You can play spy and receive one of the millions of sandviches that seem so common in many players’ inventories. You technically don’t even have to be playing, you can sit in spectator mode and gain unlocks as well.

What I want is to have the weapons be available to all players with minimal effort, if any, and you earn the cosmetic items (e.g. hats) with achievements.

the fact that you got 5 weapons today should be a sign to you that you no longer need to feel pressured into idling to get items. But hey, since you’re into time-saving solutions, why don’t you just heck? then you can get all your weapons all at once!

And casual players are not being denied the chance to use these items, at least not anywhere near to the degree they were before - so I can’t accept that as a valid complaint.

I think it just boils down to impatience, personally.

I have yet to receive an item playing 1-2 hours normally. I have only received them while idling, during times I would not normally be able to play. I have been in a variety of servers the past week, played even a little longer than usual and nothing. If this is the state of the game, then I will gladly idle while I am busy with real life stuff, as it appears the only way I can earn an item.

Secondly, hacking is another issue and involved further cheating the system. Right now I am simply meeting the minimum requirements to receive an item, hanging out in a server for a long period of time. I am just not actively playing, but that is also not a requirement by Valve. Hacking is an entirely different issue and one I don’t support, nor want to risk a VAC ban.

But I guess you are right, it boils down to impatience. I don’t feel like waiting a year hoping for that magical drop, because at the rate I get drops during normal play, it will be that long.

I have been keeping my four goddamned dead ringers, my three frigging sandviches, my three FaN’s and two sandmen and two huntsmen. I’ve been keeping all these damned duplicates, in the hope that I can eventually trade them for the medic unlocks I’m after, or, if nothing else, give them to a QT3 player in need.

Dibs on your Huntsman!

Achievements can unlock weapons again.

If I don’t need to trade it for a kritzkrieg, blutsauger or bonk, you’re welcome to it. Want one of my five goddamn sandviches?

I’m waiting for a tf2 blog post before I believe that valve approves. The only way you’re able to idle is because you’ve found a loophole to going afk… but my hunch is that valve won’t really care. Still, it’s lame. I could understand frustration at playing for a long time and finding nothing, but it seems like that problem is fixed…

Lucky I’ve got an extra Bonk just for you, buddy.

Ugh. I expected better from Valve than caving to the whims of idiots.

YEAAAH! Exactly what I wanted. Valve and I are BFF again. Hopefully others will find the new hybrid system working well for them too

Thanks :D

What’s wrong with achievements working in addition to random/time unlocks?

Hell they were working already just not for Spy/Sniper.

I don’t know about that - I’ve logged a good 5 hours or so in the past few days, and I’ve found all of one item.

Amazingly, now with the achievement unlocks I have all the items I wanted (everything but the Razorback). This beats the hell out of waiting some indeterminate amount of time.

As far as I know it was fixed as of may 29th, so if your 5 hours are before yesterday than I can definitely believe that you’ve had trouble finding items. As of today I hope that’s changed.

It did for me :) Due to the new milestones i now have 2 of every spy upgrade and got my bow/razorback!

Haven’t tried razorback, but the bow is… not as cool as I thought. It’s hard to use, and my sniper skillllzzzzz don’t transfer over.

Lies, the bow is awesome.

What I find interesting is how for many people the backpack (and random drops) seem to be pointless at present - if you have all the unlocks, what’s the point in having a backpack full of duplicates? And this begs the question of what trading is going to be for when it comes out. By then the majority of players will have everything so trading will be pointless for most.

The one thing which provides some answer to this is the hat drops. With special and quite rare hats, the backpack and trading make a certain amount of sense - but at present this isn’t nearly enough to explain the need for the system. Hats are far too rare for there to be either much of a trade in them or for them to fill out anyone’s pack.

So my money’s on much more varied and numerous ‘appearance’ drops in the nearish future. I just can’t the justification for the backpack and trade system otherwise.
