heh, got a yay AND a nay for the same question… and I thought I was confused before!
Yes, self-Jarate works.
The backburner is really nice for sneaky pyros who know how to get behind/above people, but I think that the compression blast is much more useful because of the added versatility. For unaware enemies, I find that the ignite+axtinguish routine is just as effective as using the backburner (and much more satisfying). Alternately, I have to start using the taunt kill more often.
The only time I want to use the backburner is when I go toe-to-toe with another pyro who has one. I always feel that I have just a little bit of a disadvantage in those cases, since ignite / axtinguisher doesn’t work there. I almost always lose those showdowns though.
pyro vs pyro I think just backing away and using the shotgun is your best bet. or use compression blast followed by shotgun.
I have trouble not bringing the flare gun though :)
Yeah, I’ve been trying to force myself to back off from those, but sometimes it just isn’t an option. I think a large part of the problem is just that I’m not as quick with the mouse as some, so whenever we end up square dancing, I find other pyros generally a) get more hits on me than vice versa: I die, or b) sneak to my back and back-burner crit me: I die.
I wouldn’t be winning those matchups regardless of which weapon I field though, since a) would still be happening.
compression blast would still be an advantage for you in case A though since you could blast them away a bit. ;)
just had my first kill on someone with a reflected rocket! bonus, as engy i built a sentry, exit, and dispenser in the hallway behind the red spawn on goldrush. funny stuff.
YOU CAN PUT OUT FIRES WITH THE AIR BLAST!?!?!
cripes, and people are wondering why people ask for instruction manuals for this game. i want to try that out now.
Good for you on the rocket, but I say boo to your sneaky engineering, mainly because that happened to me too many times today.
I didn’t know this before reading it here either, but I think the TF2 Wiki should help you out. Fer instance, the extinguishing effect of the compression blast is listed on the pyro page and the flamethrower page.
I finally got Natashca, the Cloak and Dagger and, immediately after joining a game, before I even spawned, I got the Ambassador. Just missing two weapons now, and they are ones I don’t think I could even use at this point. I am interested in learning the spy now though. The C&D seems much more noob friendly.
I learned while playing WoW that going through the changelist every update with a fine comb helps you get ahead. So I do this for TF2 as well (which is easy in Steam as the last change list is only a click away).
The more you know!
The C&D is good stuff you just gotta watch out for spy checking pyros puffing every damn corner they pass “just in case”. It’s also really fun to find an out of the way engy and spam various voice commands and watch him go crazy looking for you. The scouts “Need a dispenser here!” is always a favorite.
If the enemy pyro is trying to use his flamethrower to pursue you, backpedal and strafe slightly back and forth while you retaliate with your own flamethrower. Backpedaling seems to give a bit more range to the flame (perhaps just due to lag), so you can keep them consistently on fire while you only take minor damage. NB, this strategy obviously doesn’t work within melee distance.
The converse of this advice, clearly, is not to head forward to pursue enemy pyros using your flamethrower. Once they start backpedaling, switch to the shotgun so you don’t fall victim to the above tactic yourself.
This was stealth added during the Spy / Sniper update, so it’s not like you’ve been missing out all along.
Also, you can light up Huntsman arrows for extra damage.
In fact, a Pyro can light his Sniper friend’s arrow, the Sniper can then shoot it at the enemy, whereupon an enemy Pyro can reflect it with airblast, setting the Sniper alight, only for the first Pyro to put him out.
If this ever happens, I hope I’m there to witness it.

I experienced my first teenage rant today. Some guy went on about the US Supreme Court and how someone wasn’t it and some other stuff, liberally sprinkled with curse words+. Then a stronger male voice came in, in the background and said something along the lines of the first was to cool off. No really, he was to cool off or he was going in the sideboard.
I’m honestly shocked on all counts. It was almost two minutes of incoherent cursing rubbish followed by the sideboard threat repeated among more rubbish. Aside from leaving the mic. on.
+Is it just me or do you need a British, preferably Scots, Yorkshire or Lancashire accent to swear? No other voice has the evil bite of a curse word in one of those accents. Maybe Tyneside.
I would love to see a perfect storm as described above. It’s almost as likely as me getting those damn “Kill with a taunt” or “Need a light?” achievements.
going in the sideboard? is this an angry magic player?
- The Dead Ringer’s cloak consume rate has been slightly reduced, giving about an extra second of cloak time on a full meter
- Emerging from the Dead Ringer’s cloak now drains up to 40% of the cloak meter instead of 100%. This drain only happens if the meter is at least 60% full
- The Dead Ringer’s cloak meter can now be regenerated from ammo sources
Had a chance to play around with this at lunch. It’s obscene. There’s so much ammo around that you’re back up to maximum cloak straight away and can Dead Ringer all over again. Doubled everyone else’s scores and dominated three people just defending Goldrush 1-1.
I’m one of the few who thought the Dead Ringer was plenty powerful as-is, so this is murder Christmas for me.
