Anyone know why I all of sudden can see through most of the textures in the game? I’ll post a screenshot later (forgot to get one before I went to work), but basically, any map I load on any server, I can see through all of the wall/floor textures. I see shadows and can play, but it’s basically useless since I can’t really tell where I am on the map lots of times. :D
Any thoughts? After cursory search on the internet, it sounds like maybe I joined a server that was for mining items and then tried to join a regular server again. I found something about it here, but if that’s my problem, I have no idea how to reset it.
I did try deleting all local content, including the directory after Steam was done deleting local content, and it still happens after it’s all reinstalled. :(
Any thoughts?

If you wiped your TF2 directory and reinstalled it, I’m inclined to think the problem is with your video drivers. Try updating them (or uninstalling and reinstalling them if they are up-to-date)
Oh, and it could be something in the shared source engine/orange box content. Right-click on TF2 in the games list, select properties, local files, then click “verify game cache integrity”.
I did that too.
I thought it was my video card too, so I ran all kinds of tests on it. No memory corruption, not getting too hot, etc.
I’ve had strange texture problems disappear when I changed from ‘high’ to ‘medium’, maybe you can try changing it as a workaround?
Yea, I’ll give that a shot. Play with settings maybe.
The weirdest part is that I see flickers when I start and quit of the map the way it should be (with the textures all looking right).
Here’s a screenshot:

I played for the first time in a year or more last night.
I have no fucking clue what is going on. It seems to be a lot more complicated. Inventories? Hats?
Yeah, it’s gotten a little more complicated. They changed the system so that in addition to getting alternate weapons for achievements, you get them as random drops every so often while playing. Thus, you can get multiples of the same item, so you have an inventory to manage those items. Each weapon is still tied to an individual class though, so inventory management is literally just making sure it isn’t full and that you don’t have doubles. Valve claimed that item trading would be implemented some day, so you don’t need to throw your doubles away until you run out of space.
Hats (and the body accessories, ie, the Soldier’s Medal) are purely cosmetic.
The biggest adjustment will probably be getting used to the new items, especially the Spy / Sniper ones, which potentially completely change how those classes are played (Spies can now camp cloak forever while standing still, or feign death).
If you don’t know about the default Pyro flamethrower’s air blast, that has some broad uses, and one Scout item gives temp invincibility (you’ll see a red MISS! MISS! MISS! sort of like the CRIT!). But most of the early alt weapons (Pyro, Medic, Heavy) don’t introduce new mechanics so much as modify existing attributes.
Make sure you play on the PoE servers, who have an established training regime for newbies and a helpful staff.
I went back and downgraded my video drivers, tf2 works again. That’s what I get for playing around with Fallout 3 and trying to make it work. :D
I’m glad you managed to get it all fixed, but I have to say… This is kind of an awesome screenshot. I mean, in a strictly artistic sense.

It was a pretty damn strange game to play. SOMETIMES, I’d get an advantage, like seeing around the corner the ubered guy, but most of the time it was so hard to see were I was actually going since I couldn’t see a lot of the edges, that I just died a lot.
The only problem there is that you hadn’t memorized every map down to the pixel.

Incoming!
Over the next few days we’ll be removing all TF2 items that were earned using external idling applications. We’re going to adopt a zero tolerance policy for external applications used to manipulate the persistent item system. Due to us not having a policy in place prior to today, this time we’re only removing the items earned through cheating the system. Going forward, if we find users using external applications, we’ll remove all of their items. If you’re interested, only about 4.5% of the players in TF2’s community will be affected by this cleansing process.
Meanwhile, everyone who took the moral high road will soon be finding a new hat in their inventory. We’ve also significantly increased the chance of finding any of the existing hats.
We realize there is a high level of demand for items, and we’re still working on systems to allow you to find them in new ways (via Trading, and crafting duplicates into desired items). However, we need to draw the line at running external applications.

Not only are they removing the items earned through the idling apps, but they’re giving everyone who didn’t use them a free hat? Valve, you are masters of internet drama.
I did use an idling app for awhile, but most of my items have been “earned” normally, and at this point I have about 3 of everything. My only hat was “earned” normally too. So personally I’m not worried, but I know people who have used idling apps practically non-stop, so yea… RAGE AHOY!
Wow. There are several people on my friends list that spent days at a time on those servers.
Suck it, cheaters!
Oh god, the PoE server is going to be fantastic tonight.

This is tremendous news, I need to find some meltdowns over it for a good laugh.
The free hat is already in there, and it’s a fucking halo. It’s called Cheater’s Lament, and its description is “Level 1 Aura of Incorruptibility”.
Did I mention I <3 Valve?
And yeah, there was someone in my server whining about being denied the halo. He only idled the one time.
