Um, yes they are. You can unlock the items by playing and randomly having them appear OR you can unlock them via achievements.

Personally, I think that the fact that some idlers were punished and others weren’t is a ineloquent way of handling the situation. Maybe they weren’t able to detect all the people who idled, but bottom line, anyone who complains is being silly in my book.

I play Demoman almost exclusively and they haven’t had any unlocks except hats. All the other classes I’ve played I’ve randomly unlocked their items via getting achievements through regular play or through the more recent system implemented back in May. Those unlocks, apart from perhaps the Uber Saw, all have drawbacks to using them that make them balanced. It’s not as if they are necessarily better. Does it afford you more options? Sure, is it annoying to me that I don’t have those options? No, because the game plays great regardless. It just facilitates people playing in a style that works for them. I didn’t care that I didn’t have Natascha until way later, or Jarate, or any other number of unlocks. I’m not jealous that other classes I don’t play have item unlocks and the one I use does not. I just play the game and enjoy it.

I understand that some people are able to rationalize that the items just change play and don’t necessarily confer an advantage, but still want them just because they are given to some players. Considering all the freebies Valve has given the TF2 community though and the fact that I view the game as fairly balanced to this day, I think wanting them regardless is a moot point.

Honestly, it’s like watching kids who want the toy that a kid next to them has, even though they already have one in their hands. I’m saying this as someone who doesn’t care that I now have a Halo Hat or that other people don’t. I’ll work as a team regardless and switch to a class as needed on public servers. This whole reaction by a quarter of the community is patently ridiculous to me.

additional:

People used an idling tool that they knew full well, despite Valve not telling them explicitly, gamed the system. Valve is well within their rights to withdraw items gleaned this way. Seriously, the system was meant to award people for generally playing the game and while it is random, it was not meant for people to idle away without even actively playing TF2. I fail to see the validity of any of the arguments made in the previous posts. Other games have similar unlock systems that again aren’t necessarily better. One of the first weapons you unlock in Call of Duty 4, after barely playing a few rounds online, is the M16. I used that the entire time, with and without Perks, and did just fine against even more advanced players. Add in the fact that it balances teams with skill level/unlock level and again there is no reason to complain about the system. I think peoples’ complaints about these systems would have merit if the developers hadn’t thought it through and simply made the weapons better or placed everyone together without regarding skill/unlock level in CoD 4’s case. But both Infinity Ward and Valve have taken those issues into consideration and continue to patch balance changes as new exploits come into play.

My facetiousness was lost on you.

It’s the internet. Sarcasm is hard to convey through text. ;)

Yeah, it’s real difficult to get across, champ.

Do you have anything to contribute to the actual thread discussion or are you just gonna casually, and lamely, insult me…champ?

So…the thread has turned into an argument between people who have no idea what they are talking about ;(.

No offend to you, Blake, and many others, but you guys are just not seeing the whole picture.

So, you’re saying that you got that I was being sarcastic there. I guess it’s not so hard to convey, after all.

Tons 'o Free publicity for a 2+ year old game?
That’s all I’m saying…

That’s a great lesson you’ve given, but you seem to be directing it at the wrong person. Mysterio is the one that had difficulty conveying sarcasm. BlakeD had difficulty picking it up.

If I thought mysterio had difficulty conveying it, I might agree with you.

Mysterio is the one that had difficulty conveying sarcasm. BlakeD had difficulty picking it up, and attributed that to a difficulty of conveyance. It’s much funnier now that you’ve gotten me to explain it, though. (see, that’s more sarcasm)

True, but to bad it it’s publicity advertising how terrible the community acts. I likely would not grab TF2 if this were my first real impression of it, or I was considering getting it. Bad communities have turned me off from some other games as well in the past.

Out of curiosity, how many of the pissed off players don’t have halos? Is it actually higher than the 4.5% that were using the idler apps? If the outrage went beyond that maybe there’s a little something to this, though I’d still disagree with the people who are mad about it. But if the only people who are really mad were doing something they knew wasn’t the right way to go about things, we’re trying to talk a dust devil into an F5.

Yes, you seem to be a master of this sarcasm thing. Would it be possibly for you to post a chart or illustrated set of instructions for the rest of us? I’m sure everyone here would find your endless attempts to appear clever to be just as endearing as I do.

(How was that?)

Haha, this is kind of funny news. I idled for days with that little program. The reason why I did it was because the unlocks were too random, and valve even said the system would be tweaked. Is a system rewarding when you get no unlocks for 6 hours of play and then 3 within the next 15 min? No, it is just frustrating.

Considering that I’ve ran into several people recently, in games of TF2, that didn’t realize you could again unlock via achievements I confused his sarcasm as an honest statement. He may have meant it facetiously, but there are still people out there who continue to believe TF2 items are only unlocked randomly.

Back on topic, I also believe this decision couldn’t have affected that large a portion of the total TF2 population. Hindsight being 20/20 and all that, it seems like Valve should have randomly unlocked a hat for the class that any given user has spent the most time playing. That way, they wouldn’t have created a divide amongst those who refuse to heal players with or without Halo Hats - which ultimately destroys the core team game play mechanic.

I suppose in a month or two this will all be forgotten, given that it’s the internet and everything.

I used it, unlocked a bunch of stuff that I never used, don’t care if I have a halo or not. I pretty much only play Pyro and Medic, and I have all the unlocks for those two classes through achievements.

I do think it’s pretty terrible customer service on Valve’s part. They’ve said before that they don’t really care, but now they do, and they’re creating division in their player base. It’s also strange to act out four months after something starts getting used and valve says they don’t care. I believe the stance from a valve rep was along the lines of “You don’t earn items any faster than you would in game so it’s not really a big deal.”

Well I never played enough to earn anything legitimately so I did Idle (with the app - idling on a server with people is lame). I find the loss of all my items worth it for the fun I’m having reading posts from raging Internet crazies.

Go Valve!

I used the idle program because I specifically wanted to try out the cloak and dagger and kept getting razorbacks.

But I’ve played enough since then to have unlocked everything by achievement and the random drop system independently.

So uh, I guess the moral of the story is…play TF2 lots?
