The moral of the story is, don’t have done anything that someone at Valve decides they didn’t like four months ago.

I love the way server admins are handling this

Heh, I like how someone in the comments is super enthusiastic about adding “asshat”.

i don’t get it. i didn’t use an idler, so the admins make my halo into “penis.” that’ll teach me to do…nothing?

You aren’t following the logic - clearly the lesson here is that not using an idler is being an insufferable conformist, so next time make sure you circumvent the system.

Or, y’know, because it’s funny seeing “penis” floating above someone’s head.

This whole thing is so cute… People get all upset when you tell them there is loot they can’t get. No matter what it is or the reason, they will get upset at those that did get said phat l00t.

The internet is full of children.

This, but also Valve’s handling of the situation also sucks. Part of me can’t help but think this was an elaborate troll of the TF2 community. Does anyone here seriously like weapon unlocks or achievement grinding? It just seems like a huge waste of resources for something that just pisses (petty) people off.

I like both unlockable weapons and achievements. How is it a huge waste of resources?

I suppose the assumption is that it’s wasted resources to make content that a lot of players won’t see and then piss of a large part of the playerbase.

But Valve are good at stats, so if the number of people like me, who hate achievements and would rather play something else than grinding for new items, is smaller than the number of people like you and the pissed off people keep playing (just in a bad mood), then it’s not wasted resources.

I think Valve knows their players best and did the right thing from a business perspective. Me? I just uninstalled the game.

Arguably, all Valve cares about is selling additional copies of the game, since there’s no subscription fee, retaining existing players doesn’t really matter. In fact their product, oddly enough, would benefit by maximizing churn.

Also, this has been stated before, but I don’t understand the mentality that somebody else getting something extra somehow harms me. I don’t understand why people view the TF2 items unlocks as a “grind”, as long as no weapon is clearly superior to another.

But any player can see this “new content” with the addition of the random drops. And drops happen very frequently if you just play the game.

I disagree with your churn statement. One very important reason TF2 sells so well is because of the fans talking about what a good game it is, and keeping servers running. If no one stuck around, it would have a bad rep and lose future sales.

Churn’s only good if people leave your game so fulfilled they’ll buy the next.

And your second argument can be turned 180 degrees to: I don’t see how me getting the equipment from and idle server instead of playing the game like you hurts anybody. We got the same equipment and as you say it’s not superior in any way.

Most people aren’t wired to look at the hidden stats of the weapons and dispassionately view them as speadsheet entries as far as maximizing to-hit ratios and dps. This is why the hats, despite being completely useless in-game, are still sought after.

People see that the weapon and hat unlocks as valuable because Valve has made an investment beyond just owning the game required to attain them. You have to play and wait for random drops and/or grind for the items. You don’t just get them by starting the game.

Take me, for instance. I know that the weapon unlocks are technically not superior to the default weapons. Any advantages have a trade-off. I get that. As someone that does not have the time to play the game for more than a couple of hours a month, I still get resentful when I see people sporting weapon and hat options that are forever locked away from me.

I got a hat last night! Tyrant’s helm. I’m happy.

Now, if only this hat made me a better player. Oh wait, it doesn’t. But it sure it nice hitting “g” and taunting at the spawn gates at the other players. Actually, they don’t care either.

Oh well, life goes on. I’m sure there will come a point where valve decide to increase the chances of hats dropping.

Yes, I did, until they changed the rules with no warning to an unlock randomly over time system and NOT achievement tied. Then they went to random over time and achievement and it was good. But for when they changed the rules I idle program to get the goods, rather then spend days logged into idle servers.

They did increase the hat drop rate on the patch that dropped on the 2nd. Three times what is was before (some 3.57% chance now).

Wow I got kicked off the PoE server tonight cause I wasn’t Frank West. I feel special.

Understandable. He’s covered wars, you know.

God damnit Valve.

I mean, god damnit.

I have no words.
