Yeah I love the exploding pumpkins, and the ghost, and the candy. Especially the candy. Crits for everyone!

The PoE server was pretty fun last night, Harvest Event on constant loop, Thriller dance parties, some nice tit-for-tat for the Gibus hat achievement.

I got my hat legit though, I swear.

Well, I got the Attack O Lantern legit at least.

I got all my achievements legit, happily, but to spread the love I wore my new hat at all times. I just had some good pyro runs last night that got some solid kills at the cap, especially if I got to rush some scared folks.

I really like that map. It’s got just the right amount of chaos to make you have to really earn that win, instead of getting steamrolling, and the action stays heavy. I think I’d like more KOTH maps, in fact, if they’re all going to play fast and furious like that.

It was a great time. Everyone together in the middle of the map dancing to Thriller, only to have the ghost show up was just great.

I still can’t figure out a good way to get the attack o lantern achievement, though.

Sniping is a good way to get pumpkins, and they do good damage. There’s two at the corners of the cap shack, if someone goes around a corner or is probably there, pop that pumpkin.

The areas by spawn, the buildings there, are filled with 'em too. Get in there and be aggressive with a soldier, aim for the pumpkins, and you’ll get it.

Bait people into following you past pumpkins, then turn around and shoot the pumpkin.

I’ve gotten over the five needed now, and quite a number of those exploding pumpkin kills came from pure and simple luck. I distinctly remember one kill was from a wayward rocket (as a soldier) which hit a pumpkin I didn’t see and killed a fleeing enemy. Another good place to get a few kills is in the shacks which have the health packs in the middle of the game area, simply fire into those when you see the other team retreating for health. Most likely they’ll be fairly low on health anyway, so that can be an easy kill. But yeah, the other reliable way is to get a determined player follow you and shoot a pumpkin as they get close. I only ever did this as a soldier, and in one instance I remember having a scout chasing me down, so I turned and hit the pumpkin with my shotgun, which was a bit like a rocket jump in and of itself, pushing me far away and killing the scout in the process. I don’t know how I survived that one.

Also, I really love it when, whilst crit boosted, I can rocket jump somewhere and subsequently kill a spy who I did not know was there.

Also, the PoE server sounds like fun, damn shame I’m in Australia and would likely get a 400+ms ping.

so awesome.

I saw some servers listed like that last night while playing, what does it mean?

Probably all downloaded the same pirated version of TF2 to host, and either Valve or the original crack team(?) decided to have a laugh.

Assuming this is real, here’s some info from Robin: (eco is not me)

eco » no l4d2, stop asking: You know how all the fake-player-count servers got locked/renamed today?
eco » no l4d2, stop asking: Was that done at Valve, or was that someone else using an exploit?
Robin: hmm, news to me
Robin: want to email me a description of it, so I can look at it when I get to work?
eco » no l4d2, stop asking: http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/4728/71956486.jpg
eco » no l4d2, stop asking: I reasoned that was a Valve move
Robin: haha, that’s awesome
eco » no l4d2, stop asking: either way, it was hilarious.
Robin: no, hacking is serious business, we could get into serious shit if we did that kind of thing
Robin: we heard there’s some kind of server exploit in the wild now, but haven’t got the details yet
eco » no l4d2, stop asking: Well, since you guys can control everything from behind
eco » no l4d2, stop asking: since all the servers are linked into Skynet…er, Steam.
eco » no l4d2, stop asking: Well, if it was outside of Valve, probably worth looking into
eco » no l4d2, stop asking: At least the hacker has a sense of humor
Robin: yeah, we need to fix the vulnerability, sadly
Robin: yeah

I know I’m way late to the game, but I finally have a nice computer to run the game with. I joined some random Arena server and did okay, but I’m definitely getting rocked by some of these people with their modifiers on their weapons.

So, is there a Qt3 server? Forgive me if its buried within the thread, but there are 90 pages…

I don’t think the weapon modifications really impact that much. After all, there are pros and cons to using the unlockable weapons. For instance, many new people use the pyro with backburner because of the 100% crit from behind, yet fail to realise that the regular flamethrower is actually pretty darn good with the airblast capability, especially with being able to extinguish burning team mates since one of the latest patches (and not to mention reflecting projectiles like rockets).

The best way to start is simply as a medic. For one, there is a real shortage of them in most games. Secondly, they are generally the most appreciated class in the game because quite simply, other team mates live longer because of them. Finally, by following around other team members, you get a real good idea of the layout of the map, and if you are with someone good, they will be of great use keeping you alive. All the good players I’ve been with as a medic have always put my health status first, and likewise, I repay them by simply avoiding running into that rocket sailing toward me.

There are some good tips buried here in this thread, but yeah, try medic, and see how you go from there. Oh, and make sure you are signed into your friends part of steam in order to get the random weapon unlocks and hats.

Modded weapons are good for fitting your playstyle, but none have absolute advantages. People tend to underestimate the normal flamer, but as Strato said, the compression blast is great.

I’d also suggest arena as the LAST mode you get into, it’s very much the hardcore mode.

Hit a 2Fort server, which there’s millions of, it’s the easiest mode/map to get the feel of the game for.

Thanks guys! It seems that the Pyro on KOTH is a god damned champion class. I’ve lived my longest as a medic, so I’ll continue that route for a while, though I did do moderately good as a soldier and as a Heavy.

Personally I’d say the definite upgrades are:

  • Force-a-Nature
  • Atomic Punch
  • KGB
  • Krit Bone Saw

They just improve on their replacements so much.

I’m liking the regular scattergun more than FAN myself, though it depends on the map. Atomic Punch I’d likely want, but don’t have it yet. KGB and crit saw are both great.

So what’s the deal with the new sounds? Apparently certain people in certain situations doing certain things hear them (I guess they are voice-overs) and they mean certain things, but no one’s quite figured it out yet.

Youtube of the new samples at RPS.

Interesting stuff. Sounds to me like prep work for a new game mode.

According to Robin Walker that is incorrect.
