I forget is there something you need to check on Steam first to make sure that random drops will happen for you? Played last night for about an hour after L4d2 and nothing at all dropped for me, one guy got 4 drops at the same time.

I got a crafting token drop last night, so crafting materials do drop. The frequency didn’t seem nearly as high… when things were dropping, that is.

Just make sure you’re signed into Steam Friends (which should happen automatically, but can be done from the Friends window if not). If you’re signed in there and still not getting anything your luck just stinks.

I seem to remember that weapon drop chances occur at intervals of 30ish minutes, so playing for an hour will give you roughly two rolls.

Oh is that the interval? Last night in the first session I was getting one per minute.

Admittedly haven’t gotten much since then… don’t think I got anything this afternoon.

The worst part of it is that for some reason I was thinking if I had already equipped something it’d disappear from the inventory screen (cause it was in use). So yeah I used a ton of stuff for crafting, including most of my goodies evidently. Quite literally, I had racked up dozens during this one session, so I didn’t even think about using it for crafting ingredients.

I’m wishing I didn’t discard all those duplicate weapons I picked up. I was keen on keeping a neat and tidy inventory to preserve stuff so I wouldn’t lose my level 99 KGB or level 94 FaN etc. Sure, the levels mean nothing, but still looks nice when the other players see them, and new players ask “How do I get a level 99 weapon.”

I got three drops simultaneously when I signed on - all shit I already had - and then nothing else for the rest of the night.

Played for one hour, absolutely zip, random drops hate me. Also I got a Halloween achievement for dominating someone wearing a hat, should that be unlocked for me now or was it only during the event?

Christ, I suck at this game. Two hours playing. One random unlock. Another Sandvich.

The Halloween hats are still in play, you should have a Gibus now.

Yeah, I got the Achievement, but for whatever reason, I sure didn’t get the hat.

I’ve played for 4-5 hours in the last 24 hours with no drops whatsoever. How do those work?

Well, there’s this thread

It all seems a bit odd. I suck at maths, but surely given the sheer number of items you need to craft anything, and the drop rate which doesn’t seem any faster, you’d have to be playing pretty much constantly to get anywhere?

How does that work out for the people who only play now and again? My cynical side feels Valve are catering to the super hardcore players who play it all day every day, but surely not.

So assuming I generally am mediocre at FPSs, is playing TF2 on PC still going to be fun, or will I just be a skeet for the experts to shoot at?

The nice thing about TF2 is that you don’t need FPS razor-honed aiming skills to play more than half the classes. Quick reaction times do help, and knowing how the classes compliment and counter each other, is important. You don’t need to be a super deadshot to play the medic class, or engineer, or demo, heavy, etc.

I just played three rounds on 2 Fort. We completely dominated the other team because we had a medic and they didn’t. One medic. On the fourth round they wised up and the scores evened up.

Eh, that’s just for hats. They’re still useless cosmetic items. Crafting weapons, if you don’t get them through achievements, is significantly cheaper. You only need a single scrap metal and class and slot tokens. So 11 weapons to have a 50% chance of crafting e.g. an ubersaw if like me you never got one.

Don’t think of the drops as things you deserve that are being withheld from you. Think of them as bonuses.

I’m curious, though, is anyone really in this situation? Where you have six unlocks* for a class but still don’t have one of his weapons?

  • four to make a class token, two so you don’t use up your actual weapons.

Seems like it’s mostly for hats, but statistically it takes about the same time to find the necessary 81 weapon drops as it does to find one hat.

Valve really know how to outdo themselves with TF2. I’ve since enabled the option to display damage dealt which was an eye opener in to how effective certain attacks are. For instance, it really is true what they say about the scattergun being lethal at close range and useless from a distance. To go from say 110 damage down to 7 as the range increases. Likewise, the other feature I’ve enabled is the medic alert thing, great tool to have if you are playing as medic. It just gives a nice chime in the earphones when someone has taken damage and is close enough to be healed. It just makes things easier in effect.

And finally, the bugle (soldier unlock) on payload maps is deadly, I guess because people focus around one paticular dynamic point. On badwater for instance, if you want to push ahead, use the bugle with your team around you and they can easily hurt the other team with all the mini crits going around the place.

I just hope they do something with the new melee weapons. There is little to no reason why anyone would use a bottle or shovel anymore and really need a buff (in preference to nerfing the eyelander or equaliser).

Oh, double post time. After writing that little bit above last night, I went ahead and checked out the TF2 forums, namely because I had to go to bed and yet it felt too early considering my normal sleep time (Getting out of bed at 4am doesn’t really work with me).

Needless to say, browsing around I learnt that Valve are bringing in functional bots. It is currently in beta stage, and they are designed for the King of the Hill maps, but having played around last night for a half hour, neglecting sleep, they are pretty good. They do move around, try and cap the point, build sentries, heal, attempt to flank and all or those sorts of things. Their aim is incredible, and are very suspicious of possible spies, and it has been noted that the pyro is reflecting all rockets fired at them, but is probably the best TF fix I’ll be getting as I head out bush, with an absurd ping to keep me company.
