Sounds like they need to get the hell over themselves.

I am astounded that anyone could be so humorless about a hilarious game like TF2, but I guess I should have expected there’d be somebody.
So I upgraded my video card and I’m ready to get into this for serious.
Is there still a Qt3 server?
Is there anything I really need to know, now? I see the drops and stuff, but do any of them fundamentally change how the game is played.
I’m a Demoman, and I am a surgeon with that bitch.

Server: Yes, but nobody really uses it. However, the PoE servers are quite active.
Unlocks: None of the unlocks fundamentally changes the way the game is played. For the most part, they simply allow players to utilize different playstyles.
Well, not the game but some of the unlocks drastically change the way some classes are played.
Take the Demo. To replace the Sticky Launcher he gets the Chargin’ Targe, a shield with built in fire and explosive damage resistance, also has a charge attack. Add that to the Eyelander which is a bigass sword that decapitates people and you have the Demoknight who speeds around the map with the charge attack (which also makes the sword autocrit after a certain amount of charge) lopping of heads and pretty much owning if you’re any good with it.
Then there is The Huntsman, which is a bow, for the Sniper. Instead of hanging at the back popping heads the Sniper has to get pretty close to use it effectively and being a projectile you have to lead your targets like with the Rocket Launcher.
The new stuff just takes some getting used to. I’d recommend going the TF2 wiki and read up on the drops, or maybe hitting Youtube.
Got the demoman sword last night - I love it.

Huge Update!
Trading, customizing, and the purchasing of items is now possible!!! YAY!
Not to mention the 65 new items that came with Polycount, see you guys in a month, I’m gonna play me some TF2!!!
Excellent, time to start playing TF2 again! I usually play soldier, can’t wait to see that new rocket launcher. Might also play sniper again for awhile, I want that croc camouflage.
“Nemesis Kick” lol
I’m for a bunch of new stuff, especially since I can still get all of the stuff in game (eventually) without buying it.

PC Gamer: When I asked about the way you give out unlocks before, you said you couldn’t just give people what they want right away, because they’d ruin the fun of unlocking it for themselves – “People will eat all the sugar they can until they’re sick”. For people with the disposable income, doesn’t this system permit that?
Robin Walker: The addition of unlockable items to TF2 was about adding longer term goals and rewards for players. The value you place in a reward you receive is a function of the “cost” you paid to get it. The reason we don’t give you all the items instantly is because they would have had no cost, and hence, you would value them little. So in TF2, the time you take to find an item is the cost you pay. Not everyone has time, though, and by allowing customers to purchase items directly, we’re still not allowing them to avoid a cost. It’s just that in this case, the cost is money, not time.
Edit: Oh, the Steam forums have exploded with the flood of tears. Delicious!

Some of those new items look terrifying. Self-healing soldiers, scouts and pyros? It makes my combat medic cry.
I really like the sound of the sydney sleeper, though. I think it’ll be the perfect sniper weapon for me. My lack of headshot skills don’t matter, and I get to help the team from afar.
I’m looking forward to the release of the crafting recipes. And for some servers to get updated so I can play.

Hmm. Kind of interesting to see Valve start down the micro-transaction path.

I thought the writing was always on the wall ever since the items got introduced to the game and Valve talked about how people might trade them some day and so on.
I’m fine with all that. No real disadvantage for players who don’t want to spend money in the store. And Valve really delivered an insane load of free content for the game so far.

I suspect that there will be a disadvantage, at least in the short-term and medium-term.
That said, I expect this to be insanely successful. Just not what I want in a game anymore though.
As I read that update, in my mind it sounded like Saxton Hale narration…
I like micro-transactions. Now, instead of having to grind and grind for the set in the game, I can apply the fruits of grinding away all day long everyday at work and immediately jump into the action with one of the new sets? Very yes. I am very excited about the soldier set, will go along way to counter the plague of sentries since the engineer update. Also the new spy knife looks amazing - silent killer plus you assume the identity of whomever you just back stabbed.

Thank god. I’m an adult, and i often don’t have time, and if i do spend the time to grind out dozens of hours for a new hat, i shouldn’t and feel horribly guilty about all the more productive things i’ve failed to do with that time. I am more than willing to drop 5$ on my favorite classes’ weapons than grind grind grind. It’s why i will never, ever, play an MMO.
I guess I’m in alone in that I don’t find it to be grinding when I can still play TF2 and have a great time no matter if there are more drops or not. I play, I have fun, I get extra stuff for doing so… Doesn’t seem very grindy to me.
You’re hardly alone in that. I really enjoy the trickle of shiny new toys while playing TF2. In fact, the Polycount Pack just makes it far more likely that I’ll get pleasing new drops for my collection during random gameplay. Why would I ruin these exciting new opportunities for discovery through the vulgar act of purchase?

I like the update and I just spent $20 on some stuff, but I have to say the prices are a BIT steep. $17 for a hat is kind of ridiculous, that’s more than I spend on actually existing hats.
