I recall they were part of the recipe to make a class specific weapon or hat.

Hilariously enough, I read that crafting wiki article when I first got the link from clicking on the Token in roBurky’s backpack and I still don’t know what the point of the Token is in the game. It’s just an ingredient for crafting something? So, it’s padding for the system?

In order to make a weapon for a specific class, you need the class token. So, you need a soldier token to make a new shovel, or a pyro token to make a flamethrower, etc. I assume it’s because there isn’t actually that much variety of ingredients, so they needed a way to differentiate between, say the 4 different classes with shotguns.

The padding is the fact that it takes 3(? I don’t remember) items to smelt down into a class token.

Paddding. Lots of padding and grinding.

Yeah, the tokens are pretty useless, and it was pretty stupid of me to have made it. It takes five gazillion weapons to make something using the tokens. I think I was planning on trying to craft a medic hat out of it someday.

Squee gave me the amputator and a huntsman, which I crafted with some scrap to make the medic’s crossbow.

The crossbow gets my solid seal of approval. I can beat soldiers as a medic now. I’ve always hated soldiers.

Edit: The crossbow is amazing fun. This has completely revived my love of TF2.

WORLD WAR WEDNESDAY

New stuff for Soldier, oh boy :)

…and a single newish weapon for the Pyro. I suspect they are saving all their really good Pyro ideas for the update that goes along with the meet the Pyro video. Apparently (from the pyro page) the engineer is also not getting any love this time around, probably because adding new machinery for him is much harder than adding a new rocket launcher variant for the soldier.

That means we are just waiting for the medic and possibly a new game mode announcement. Hopefully the ‘meet the…’ video means the medic is getting a full set of new goodies. I’m hoping for a new medigun, some random ideas/guesses:

Steady Hand

Heals multiple people at once to a much lesser degree (1/5th) than the vanilla gun as well as giving them knockback force resistance. On uber it could just ramp up to healing everyone nearby at the vanilla medigun rate while retaining the knockback resistance. Should encourage teamwork and allow for a group turret rush/point capture.

Fools Rush In

Heals like the regular medigun but on uber it increases the move speed of the medic and his heal target to a little faster than the scout.

Reverse the polarity

Turns the medigun into a longer (double?) range health sucker that slowly drains the targets health. On uber it detonates a pulse in a short range around the medic killing anyone nearby instantly.

I am excited about the Detonator. Flare jumps for pyro now, please.

This sounds a lot like the Quick-Fix, currently in beta.

So apart from stuff like the extra map, how does this update work? Are these items random drops that I have to find in game or will they magically appear in my inventory at some point? If I don’t get them this week, will I ever get them?

The new items will be added to the drop pool after the update goes out later today. After that, you will be able to get them as random drops or in crafting. You will almost certainly not get them all this week unless you buy them or trade a whole lot, but if you play/idle enough, you should get them all eventually.

They’ll be added to the drops you can get in game or they’ll be able to be crafted. They’ll always be available from this point on if they follow whats been done in each of the past updates. I really like the look of the new soldier stuff. As my most played class, I look forward to get my grubby mits on them.

It’s too bad that the new rocket launcher is a direct hit variation. I already refrain from using the direct hit in fears that it’ll mess up what little muscle memory I’ve built up from playing soldier.

I get 50% of my pyro kills with the shotgun (and the other 40% with the axetinguisher) , not sure if I’ll be able to give that up for the detonator.

Faster missile travel and splash damage? I will happily re-learn.

Annnnnddddd it looks like LulzSec is ddosing teamfortress.com so we can’t see the last update/meet the medic video. Buncha jackasses.

edit: never mind, spoke too soon. it was just having some refresh issues apparently. read somewhere that lulzsec was planning on targetting it. my mistake.

Looks like TF2 is indeed going free to play. http://www.develop-online.net/features/1325/Free-at-last

Q. Is there a way to practice before I play online?
Yes. We offer helpful training campaigns that will teach you the basic gameplay mechanics of various mercenaries. We also have a mode that allows you to practice on an assortment of maps with CPU bots with a variety of skill levels.

Q. How do I convert my free account to a premium account?
Make any purchase of any amount in the in-game Mann Co. store.

Ugh, free to play. On one hand it’s always good to have more players in the game, I’m kind of worried about seeing more hacks and aimbots. I know from the FAQ it’s supposed to be something they have a plan for, but my experience so far has been pretty pristine (975 hours of play(! but some of them idle), only encountered 2 cheaters.)

As an aside, Robin Walker and some of the other devs are supposed to be visiting the Reddit Great Lakes server tomorrow, if you want to see the Valve Rocket Launcher at work.
