When I talked to them back in Feb, Robin and Erik said that was like three months of healing, and that only one person had that much on record at the time.

The 25% charge thing about the Ubersaw seemed rich - and to dissuade healing - until I noticed that it’s the one you need all of the achievements to get. That means persuading a Heavy to punch four people to death in ten seconds while ubered, 10,000 healing in a single life, finding enemy Engineers who put eight buildings in sticky-ing range of your ubered Demo - and finding one who’ll go for them. And three months of healing.

If you can do all that, you can have a tactical nuke for all I care.

The one about a heavy punching four people to death in ten seconds while ubered is pretty laughable. Like I said, people are going to immediately realize how stupid these are and just go grab them on private servers with their buddies. I certainly will.

Since Costa seems to not have read the list at all, here it is in convenience.

Some of these are okay, others seem like they’ll turn evey medic into a retard and fuck up the game.

chet, if you’re reading this: please, please have Valve review these once again before release. I’d rather not not look forward to playing TF2.

In the weekly Qt3/PoE matches, there’s usually this one player there called Gurk da Boy who plays a ridiculously talented heavy or soldier; his mere presence on red or blu oftens decides a match. If Valve eventually releases Heavy content which is similar in effectiveness and requirements to the ubersaw, he’s probably the only player who’ll be able to use it. I think you’d have a hard time finding anyone who would agree that Gurk should be the only guy with access to a mostly-improved minigun or rocket launcher.

Two points on which I’m not clear:

  1. Will servers be able to manage the use of unlockable weapons? Will we see “stock weapons only” servers, configured to use the default loadouts, or will unlocked weapons always be available?

  2. At which point(s) will you be able to switch out weapons? Can you change weapons from the Choose Class screen, or are you locked into a particular loadout on entering a server?

It’s either implied or directly stated in the article that you can choose your weapons loadout every time you change class. I’ll bet that even if there isn’t a way of forcing regular loadouts, someone will create a server mod that allows it.

Seriously.

It’s pretty clear you’re just going to get a bunch of clan guys methodically going through these on private servers. The rest of us will just be crossing our fingers or playing the game wrong to try and earn arcane achievements.

I realize they probably don’t want to graft another system onto TF2, but something like BF2/2142 would make a lot more sense. You earn some kind of “experience points” towards your next unlock, you earn them by just playing. Achievements can give you a big boost in XP, but you can get it fine without them too. That seems like best of both worlds to me.

Straight achievement based unlocks seem unworkable.

8 engineer buildings in a single ubercharge? I must not only suck at this game, I must suck at vision because I’ve never seen ANYONE do that. What a stupid set of goals.

That’s actually one of the least ridiculous ones. I’ve seen it happen a number of times on a couple of Dustbowl segments.

“You’ll Feel a Little Prick” is never going to happen in the course of normal play because who the fuck ubers a scout right as he wades into four low-health classes and gets four kill shots in 10 seconds?

To be fair, achievements aren’t solely intended to reward you for things you already do – they’re a dangled carrot sometimes. But I agree that some of these carrots are dangling out in la-la land rather than tactical excellence land.

That’s pretty easily done on Dustbowl 2-2. I was on a team with 10 Engies once there and place looked like a used sentry gun lot.

Really people, the achievements are fine. Do you really need all the unlocks for all 9 classes? Cause if you do, that’s a hell of a lot of grinding. I’d rather just play and get them through normal play. And if you really want to game the system on a private server to get these then that’s just sad.

Bah, you’re all getting way too worked up about this. The only possible unbalancer is the ubersaw, and by the achievements, that’s going to be a rare beast. Gurk Da Boy is a great heavy, no question, but he isn’t a game unbalancer. He just begs a thicker swarm of grenades to kill his medic-leech than most. I popped him in the head a few times myself.

The long and short:

  1. Retreat syringe. No big deal, slightly increases the number of ubers coming.
  2. Crit gun. Possibly big, if combined with normal uber. By itself, no big deal.
  3. Fancy saw. Somewhat increases number of ubers coming.

I’m not that assed about the whole thing. Not to be a bitch, and this is why I probably don’t get into MMOs, but not everybody needs to be able to get the entire achievement set in a week to make it a desireable thing. There’s some kind of gaming communism going on here.

H.

What about the fact that a number of those achievements encourage people to be bad medics, Houngan? I don’t know if I’d want to be on the team where the medics are trying to get “You’ll Feel a Little Prick”.

I think that’s my main objection - there are going to be a lot of crap games where the medic players are trying to get these achievements.

Chet, if you’re reading this, and you’re in any way responsible for the Achievement names “Midwife Crisis”, “FYI I Am A Medic”, “Peer Review”, or “You’ll Feel A Little Prick” - good work.

If it’s not a standard server setting it’ll be a mod, but either way I’m pretty sure that’ll relegate your server to the Custom tab. You don’t want to tell the player “Well done, here’s your fun reward!” then say “ERROR: REWARD NOT VALID” when he joins a normal game.

I doubt it will be much worse than the majority you find right now in public servers. If anything, this might make people play more with the medic class.

My previous posts in this thread meant this: this discussion has turned into something like a WoW thread, with lots of arm waving and threats like “omgz…i’ll never play again!” or “omgz…so retarded!!” because there is a item(ubersaw) that will be available to 1% of the players.

Looking at the list of achievements(btw, i had read it, NOOU) i don’t think that the first tier weapon will be hard to get to anyone, the 2nd will come with time and a bit of luck or some serious catassing/cheating but the last … haha, i doubt that even with cheating you’ll get it easily.

And looking at it, do you REALLY want to have bad/non-good medics with it? Do you really want to have people trying to bonesaw people to death to get a faster uber instead of healing? Because i don’t.

Man … i still haven’t cleared all the original achievements because the last ones are in classes i don’t usually play, and i play TF2 A LOT.

You’ve never played on a team where the heavy just runs around punching stuff or the scout only uses his bat? There are people playing the game “wrong” almost every time I play. Who cares, really? I’m not gonna be too affected by a few losing rounds. Of course since I’m a defensive player, I’ll usually spectate to see which team is getting hammered so I can join them and try to turn the tide.

The point is you don’t need these loadouts to have a good time. And Valve has already mentioned they might implement another way to get these so maybe no grinding will even be needed.

I play 1-2 nights a week and have only accumulated 675k. Yikes.

I play on a pretty small set of servers, since I’m not in the States, so maybe my experiences aren’t varied enough. Or I’m just not good enough ( more likely even )

But I haven’t seen a team with that many engineers on Dustbowl since the first two months of the game. And when the turretfort blew, the blastforce pushed several people out of the engy class. And that’s just one map. For an achievement I still think its essentially unattainable for 90% of the players.

These aren’t rewards; they’re just reminders we haven’t ‘beaten’ the game.

I definitely agree that these achievements are going to take a long time to et, but isn’t that a good thing? I got all my team fortress 2 achievements (except the friend one, tear) within 2 weeks, then it was over. So I’m looking forward to these.
