You have to look down fully in TF2 to pull off a proper rocket jump, so give the mouse an extra push before jumping. Also, crouching during the jump greatly increases the height.

I played a fair amount of 2Fort in which less tactically-minded people were playing engi; if the engis decided that holding off the scout rush wasn’t worth their while, I learned to be a demoman and sticky both of the courtyard’s door frames (4 stickies each, kills low- and mid-size classes) to help with getting rid of that first wave.
In fact, I finally saw the Meet the Demoman video the other day and really, really identified with his ambush.

Or you could just shoot them in the head instead of missing :).
I just saved my team last night in that stupid mine-cart push map (whatever it’s called) due to switching between scouts (For disruption) and snipers (for the lulz).
Now playing as a sniper on 2fort is just mutual masterbation with the other teams’ sniper(s).
Look down (if you look straight down, you actually get some forward momentum) hit JUMP, then very quickly hit CROUCH and SHOOT at the same time.
You’ll go much much higher.
It doesn’t take long to get it down, just practice on an empty server for a while.

I think the engineer should be able to shoot away sticky bombs more easily with his pistol, perhaps by increasing the hitbox of stickies. I’ve played as both engineer and demo lately, and it feels a little too easy to destroy a sentry by lobbing a few from behind a corner or over a wall. You’re pretty much at the mercy of the demoman unless a teammate bails you out or you can perform a heroic shotgun rush and kill the demo before he can detonate the stickies.
Soldiers vs sentry seems fair. He can duck out and shoot rockets but the engineer’s repair rate can usually exceed the soldier’s damage, and it tends to attract more heat from teammates then somebody lobbing stickies.
I’d like to see the Engie be able to convert enemy stickies to metal by whacking them with his hammer. That could be fun, especially if the enemy Demoman catches you doing it.

Oh hey, it never occurred to me to only take headshots in every circumstance, that’s obviously what I was getting at.
Fuck’s sake, am I that obtuse? Do you never find yourself in a situation when you can’t pick and choose shots? Do you lack reading comprehension? Delivering big damage every five seconds is better than total damage every twenty. I thought I had been clear, and apologize if I was suggesting that the headshot was a terrible idea at all times.

You can hit them when your melee weapon too.
One night on the PoE server, Not One Of Us, Lazy Shiftless Bastard, IIRC, and myself were trying to chip stickies around as if it were golf.

Next time i try to make a joke, someone stop me. :)
Honestly? I actually think playing as a Sniper, and not getting headshots, is a waste of the class. Of course it’s better to be dealing damage than not, but Snipers just don’t do enough damage over time compared to the other more melee classes to justify using them as a long ranged annoyance. And i’m not very good, but on a map like Mine or whatever it’s called, i can get a headshot pretty much every time the rifle is charged - it’s staying alive and paying attention to rocket/demo/scout spam that’s hard. Getting headshots on targets like 2fort is much harder as you really don’t have a place to put your back and remain fairly safe, and the snapshots presented to you on the bridge are hard to hit. I’ve seen some pretty nice sniping done from the water, though.
Got my server set up if we want to try and use it friday.
I’ve got it running right now if anyone wants to help test. 24 players, mostly stock maps (no CTF maps). I won’t be on until later, but I’ll leave it running all night just to see how it works out.

… or look for the server with “QT3” at the start of the name.
If it works ok, I’ll give a few people the RCON password so we can manage it and keep the riff raff out.
I’m pretty confident if a few of us just pop in there on Friday, the server will fill out with random people.

Sweet! I’ll be sure to join up Friday night and give it a try.

So I’m finally going to have some time to “get into” and learn TF2. Anyone have any decent guides to read up on? So far I’ve spent a little time starting games locally to try to learn the maps. Back when Orange Box came out, I did play some as medic, but not much else.
Do you guys stick pretty much to the QT3 server(s)? Any newbie advice would be appreciated.
There aren’t really any QT3 servers (there’s the one I just put up, but that’ll probably be just for our friday night games if anything). There’s the POE servers. But generally, I jump around a lot.
TF Strategy is good, as is the TF2 Wiki.
If you don’t mind me askin’, how are you lucky enough to be playin’ that map? I wish Valve would release the damn map and medic achievements already
It’s a custom map EDIT: or he could be a tester for Valve. But i think i’ve seen servers in the past with that custom map.

Go into the console and enter the following lines, one by one:
alias +rocketjump “+jump;+duck;wait;+attack”
alias -rocketjump “-jump;-attack;wait;wait;wait;-duck”
bind mouse2 “+rocketjump”
Replace mouse2 with the input of your choice. Works like a charm.
The script works well, for sure, just keep in mind some servers disable the wait; command.
The tricky part of the rocket jumping isn’t really the button timing, it’s more getting a feel for where to jump from and to, and how to properly angle your shot to get there.
Wow - I should try that. I’ve never put in enough time to learn how to rocket jump properly.
Malphigian - could you put your server up tonight - I tried to check my ping this AM, but it was back down.
Up again, sorry about that, didn’t run it with screen and closed the shell by accident.

I’m wondering how people’s pings will hold up. The server is based in Colorado. It’s a good hosting facility, but it’s kind of the middle of nowhere. Might kill the whole idea.
I got about 110 to your server, and I’m here in Boston. I typically get 70-80 to the Lord Deke and Garbage Day servers. Not a deal breaker, for me - anyone else give it a try?
