The Umbrella Academy - Netflix

So nice I had to watch it twice.

All 10 episodes of season 3 just dropped.

Man, this show is such a great illustration of the idea that no amount of great production, casting, acting, choreography, effects, etc. can fix/mitigate bad writing.

I would agree with every part of that sentence except the one where you are applying it to The Umbrella Academy.

Do you mean just this season, or you didn’t like the writing in previous seasons?

I can’t comment yet on the full season, but I think they did a great job with Elliot Page’s transition.

All three seasons, up to S3E5 where I am now. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the show and I’m having a great time, but there seems to be a certain amount of plot-related laziness or something along those lines that leads to character decisions and events that feel forced and weird to me. Sorry if I came off super negative, that wasn’t my intent.

Edit: oh, right, I also loved how they handled that transition.

Amen. Most of the script is good but it’s clear they had a very complicated plot and lots of character beats to hit and couldn’t quite get everything to hang together and so resorted to idiot pinball.

I haven’t started on S3 yet but it looks from the trailers like its given up on taking itself too seriously which will be a big improvement.

Yep. Lots of style but also lots of dumb. The wedding episode in season 3 is maybe the worst ever for the series. It goes on (and on) forever and barely moves the plot forward. By the time season 3 is done, all the pieces are reset and nothing that happened made any difference at all.

So my wife and I threw S3E1 on last night and neither of us have any clue about anything anymore. It’s been two freakin’ years, is it so hard to do a recap to highlight the basics? I guess we’re gonna go back and rewatch at least season 2, but we might just start from scratch.

I didn’t really enjoy season 2 but season 3 was fantastic. Definitely my favorite of the three. The show is really firing on all cylinders this go around, everything just seemed to come together really well. I was surprised at just how funny it was. It made me laugh frequently, almost every episode. Loved the amazing dance off in the first episode. The apocalypse has never been so much fun - a very entertaining watch.

Agreed on the wedding episode but I can’t agree with your assessment of the ending.

  • Luther is dead and is the new Ben.
  • Everyone lost their powers.
  • Something is not quite right with Allison and her ending. Even if the timeline were reset, it wouldn’t explain how her 1960’s husband isn’t 120 years old.
  • Reggie and his original wife are now alive.

What? No. He’s fully alive again.

Oh, you’re right. But he is powerless.

And svelte!

As an aside, in previous seasons I absolutely hated Klaus’s scenes. In season 3, they were my favourite. His interactions with Reggie were fantastic.

Whoops, you are absolutely right about the state of their powers! I was (still) so miffed by the wedding episode that I had inexplicably overlooked it.

I think it’s easiest to summarize as “They got stuck in the past, had adventures/lives, then they tried to go back to the present and wound up in an alternate dimension.” That pretty much covers S2.

See, we figured we could get by on that, but then we started questioning the lore You know, the Commission, the briefcases, etc. We’re both pretty sketchy on that stuff so we’ll just do a rewatch. First we need to hit Stranger Things and Only Murders.

EDIT: Actually, I think I found a pretty decent recap on youtube. Watching now.

We really enjoyed S3–other than wanting to kill Allison repeatedly–but the ending is a shitshow. It just makes no sense on any level.

Why did Reggie need Allison in on it? How does he even know about Oblivion? Why would God put a reset button anywhere, let alone in an alternate dimension? Why does it need 8 people to make it work? Why does it have guardians, let alone samurai ones? Why did Reg not want Klaus there?
The list of stupid questions goes on and on,

Yeah, the ending is goofy.
