The United States of Tara

This is one show that was completely off the radar for me, which is surprising because I tend to be tuned in to anything psychological in nature (comes from reading way too many blogs devoted to the study and practice of psychology).

It’s airing on Showtime on Sunday nights at 10pm Eastern, and I’m seriously impressed with what I’ve seen so far. The show is respectful of the disorder (Dissociative Identity Disorder, formerly Multiple Personality Disorder) and it takes a hard look at what it means to the sufferer and the family. A hard look, and yet at the same time hilarious. This show has laughs aplenty. And the potential for many more to come - the casting demands it. Nate Corddry and Tony Hale seem to have bit parts that could potentially bring the funny, if that’s what you’re looking for.

The main cast just seems to comfortable in their roles already. I find that most TV series start off a little rocky, but not these folks. Toni Collette is absolutely convincing in her various alters, and John Corbett is playing the supportive husband and father with aplomb.

I wasn’t expecting to enjoy the show as much as I do, but I’m hooked. They’ve got me for a season. Highly recommended.

Oh, did I mention that it’s written (at least the initial eps) by Diablo Cody of Juno fame, and Steven Speilberg is one of the executive producers?

Do yourself a favour, check it out (I believe the Showtime web site has the first episode online), I’m not that easily smitten by new TV, but this has caught my attention.

I’ve noticed it running on my “premium channel”, but heard no buzz. Seems worth a look, alright.

i caught the pilot on netflix instant watch, it was pretty good. i really liked how some personalities were favorites of certain family members. and the husband’s conflict of whether or not to sleep with his own wife when she was coming on to him in the lolita persona.

It being written by Diablo Cody was a negative for me at first, because I wasn’t a huge fan of Juno. I watched the 2nd episode of this, and thought it was pretty interesting, at least enough to keep watching. It’s no Weeds, though.

Personality I think the show is too big for only 30 minutes an episode. It seems to me that the show likes to cut between various time frames and makes it feel disjointed in my opinion. By the time the episode starts to getting interesting we only have 10 minutes left. I do like the cast who are pretty good which makes it worth it to watch.

I agree. Thirty minutes is too little, even considering there’s no commercial interruptions and they are a full 30 minutes. An hour long network show would be around 42 - 44 minutes long. Weeds was starting to trend that way, if I recall, with shows hovering in the 40 minute mark. I think “TUSoT” would do well to head that way.

Athryn, I enjoyed Juno, but I certainly can understand how Diablo Cody’s quirkiness is not for everyone. It seemed forced at times in Juno, but so far seems to be kept at tolerable levels in TUSoT. We’ll see if it can be kept unintrusive.

I don’t know who the hell Diablo Cody is, but this show is at least watchable. Just saw three episodes and enjoyed most of it. It does feel a bit Weedsy.

I watched the first episode today on Netflix. I didn’t know going in that it was written by Diablo Cody (I hated Juno, so I probably wouldn’t have watched it if I had known), but I liked the episode well enough to keep watching.

Wait…

Why did you guys hate Juno?

Because it has quirk and constant pop culture references intertwined with altered vernacular and other peoples likes it, and it apparently stole away attention from Paul Thomas Anderson.

And the girl who played Juno looks like a 14 year old boy. Which, I guess, was the point.

“Quirk” is one thing. Constant, smarmy, intensely forced quirk is something else entirely.

No.

I wonder if Tara’s sister has alters too?

What in the world are you talking about?
