Good info. Thanks guys.

Anybody know if they’ve abandoned translating the books? It’s been a long time since they released Blood of Elves.

Having played Witcher 1 last year, I do sympathize with players trying to wrap their head around the opening events of W2. The game literally does take place mere months after the conclusion of W1. Though actual events of W1 aren’t vital to the story of the sequel.

The most helpful bit of info would be to watch the outro epilogue FMV that closes out W1 after its credits roll.

This movie is a connective bridge that helps explain the potentially confusing discussion of a failed assassination attempt on King Foltest during the start of W2. This is explained in detail in the codex, but I was a bit surprised CD project didn’t just include or re-purpose that movie somewhere as well.

pre-loaded the 10gb files on Friday
finished downloading and patching today
everything working fine

noticed a few minor changes so far but nothing really significant yet (to the hoardings, to the hoardings … fucking scene … )

oh, very good point, although they probably would have had to redo it. I remember it looking really good but when compared to the new game and in particular the new intro, the difference in quality is jarring.

I love that fight scene (not as much as the new intro but still)

What a pain in the ass. Downloaded 15gigs to patch the game, then had to re-download two parts just to install the patch. Finally got it patched and the game wouldn’t start. It kept giving me an error which i finally tracked down to something that was installed when I installed the motherboard due to the game requiring Net framework 4.

The first one was like this as well. Hits the ground running.

Last I heard, the next one is due out in December 2012. There are also functional fan translations easily available online for all the stuff not yet released commercially in English. I wouldn’t say they’re up to par with professional work, but they’re good enough for what they are. I’d still buy and read any official published stuff they care to eventually release, though.

Old news to everyone who isn’t me, probably, but thumbing through the manual I noticed that Troy Goodfellow is credited with proofing. Pretty cool!

Reading this on GAF makes me really wish they changed the control scheme on PC:

-Left Bumper now pulls up the same menu(spells, meditation, etc…); Biggest difference is that you no longer need to push Left->then up/down to highlight requisite spell. Now you just literally move the analog stick freely to choose any of the 5 spells directly! Soooo much more comfy. It’s like the weapon wheel selection in a game such as Resistance.

-Left Trigger is now lock-on. You hold it down to maintain lock on a target; camera locks onto target and combat basically plays out as if you were Z-targeting in Zelda. Circle-strafe, etc… Let go of trigger and the camera goes free-roam once again. Did not check if targetting can be set to toggle versus Hold(default). I imagine it can, but I’ll check later. Toggle would help maintain lock while shifting spells/items.

-Right trigger is block, parry, riposte. No real change here.

-Right Bumper is item use.

-Y is magic, B is roll, A/X are light/heavy attack.

This scheme really should come to PC EE at some point. It’s vastly more comfortable.

Oh, how I have missed you ‘Can girls be witchers toooooo?’ girl.

Honestly, it plays a bit clunky on 360. I like the game so far, but the combat and movement is a far cry from something like Dark Souls. You can definitely tell this game was ported over too.

Oh dear, merryprankster is playing this. Prepare to hear about Dark Souls!

Seriously though, there’s no denying the whole game is a bit clunky. It’s great for those of us who came at it from the RPG side. We get interactive, action-based combat in the midst of our deeply satisfying cinematic RPG.

I’d love to have combat that’s as tight as Batman. One step at a time though. Just getting to this point required an overhaul of the system from The Witcher 1.

It never played like Dark Souls.

If you’re looking for that, you deliberately misled yourself from the get-go.

The Witcher is all about the world and the characters first, and then the story. That the combat is interesting and fun and challenging is icing on the cake.

Utterly disagreed. If anything I prefer having analog movement to using WASD, and the “use a 360 controller” solution no longer holds water because the game controls much better with a gamepad on the 360 than it did on the PC.

I like the game so far, but the combat and movement is a far cry from something like Dark Souls.

Probably because it’s not in any way trying to be Dark Souls. When Dark Souls has a story and dialogue on par with either Witcher game, let me know.

You can definitely tell this game was ported over too.

Bull. It’s without question the best PC-to-console port I’ve seen this gen, possibly ever. How they got 6 year old console hardware to do this is worthy of its own behind-the-scenes videoblog series.

That’s odd. They didn’t update the PC gamepad controls to match those on the console?

Well, I know the game is not Dark Souls, But I maintain that the combat, camera and controls are clunky when compared to any other game I have played recently. If you think that Witcher 2 has fluid controls I definitely suggest playing more games.

The acceleration of the sticks is almost digital in nature. Both camera and movement don’t increase on a nice even curve as you depress the sticks further. This leads to clunky, awkward movement/combat.

I have also noticed a lot of hiccups in the game, where a scene will seem to stop and then catch up a bit.

For all these reason I maintain that from a technical standpoint Witcher 2 on 360 plays like a clunky PC port.

That being said, I find myself already drawn into the world, and that clunky pc derived gameplay certainly won’t keep me from playing. I know it doesn’t sound like it but I am enjoying the game. There is a depth to the world and a rawness that I am really digging.

I suppose it’s petty and wrong that the concept of a bad port from PC to console makes me happy :)

Aargh - the funny zoomed out FOV! Why are there no prompts when I have to press X! WHERE ARE MY LOADING SCREENS! I FEED THE CAT DURING LOADING SCREENS!

Haha! Yeah, I’l be sure to let you know when Dark Souls starts referring, in a fantasy milieu, to a unit of soldiers as Special Forces… That’s some high-grade, top draw writing right there.

Is that your way of dismissing the writing of the game as sub-par for games in general? In a 3-act game, which lasts for what, 40-50 hours, you draw out one thing and critique it.

In general, I find the writing in The Witcher 2 to be of higher standard than what we are used to. The voice-acting is pretty superb as well, and it has some of the most interesting NPC’s I’ve ever seen in a game.

The comparison to Dark souls in this matter is apt, since Dark souls contain very little writing and story. That game instead chooses another method of telling a story though, but its definitely not through writing and talking. Exposition I think the word is?

Again, I would love if you would elaborate on your remark since I find it curious.
