From reddit: Triss comparison between TW2 and TW3. I guess it’s a spoiler if you haven’t met her yet.

I much prefer her earlier outfit but the model work (and expressions) are pretty nice.

I feel like I’ve seen this wall before in this thread… (yes, it’s one of the downgrade brigade comparison pieces). Note that I don’t have everything on Ultra. I just had to chuckle when I found it.

It looks like the downgrade pictures were right. You haven’t got the big stone blocks on the corner and grass is growing out of that big rock.

DOWNGRADE STRIKES AGAIN

Velen is too big! I am already 1 level above my current quest. And I hate the way my armor looks, you know… its as ugly as the land where I found it… :p
So I am working on the Barron quest there, but decided to go for a haircut and beard trim. I saved a nice barber earlier in the day from slavers.

Oh man, so many new things to discover. Like mount-and-blade style horseback melee, which I discovered by accident. Safest way to take out bandit camps, it seems. And it turns out you can boat your way around. Fun. And sunken ships – do not enter them or you could get stuck inside.

No need to worry about that in Novigrad, there are a few shops, a few quests and that’s it. Despite its size it feels very ehm, dynamic? It’s not a pace breaker that cities tend to be in other rpgs.

Gwent seems pretty good, but it’s hard to tell because I’ve yet to win a single fucking game. I’ve also bought every card I could find.

I dunno, I think the stupid dice game might been better simply because I could actually win it and move on.

I won my first match of gwent and ignored it from then on. At that point I realized that there was so much to do and see, I didn’t want to waste time playing pokemon.

Is there a mod for looting? Something like wow’s gather all in a radius? Something about this game makes looting a real hassel. I did my first quest, for the first time playing this game, and maybe someone has a suggestion to make gathering stuff less a chore. I guess you need it sell for money? And if you want to craft.

You gotta be kidding me. I was just coming to post about my Gwent addiction. Game is pretty strategic and a great deal of fun. If you play low-level merchants to start off with–you know, because your card collection is pretty lowbie because you’ve just started out–you can win much more often than lose.

Selectively loot a lot of the time. You want alcohols and any sort of fats or tallow in your inventory for replenishing sword oils and potions. Once you get to a certain threshold of plants, I usually stop looting them. Unless you need them for a totally new potion, there’s no point.

Also see VG 24/7’s mostly exploit-free guide on winning Gwent if you are struggling.

Gwent basic hints

-If you have a weather card in your hand, plan around it. For example if you have the rain card and you have melee cards and siege cards, focus on melee in first round and play Rain at the end of that round, then use all the siege units in the second round.
-Try to use the weather cards and horn cards at the end.
-Use medics only in the second (or third) round, obviously.
-Special cards rocks: horns, spies and decoys. Buy them when you can and add them to your deck.
-Use decoy to turn his spies against him. You can also use them to play a medic twice. Another use is to retrieve a high power unit that is under a weather condition, that way his weather card wasn’t as effective and you can try play it in the second round.
-Remember heroes ignore weather cards.
-Know when to admit defeat, if the enemy is playing lots of powerful cards in the first round, concede it, that way you start with a one card advantage in the second round, where maybe he has just normal cards.
-That said, with the Northern realms deck you should always try to win the first round, because their special perk faction, one extra card if you win a round.
-Put all the Biting Frost cards you have playing against the monster faction. Put less Frost and Fog against Scoia’tel faction.

edit:

That’s how he actually sounds so don’t worry about his voice. I listened to a podcast a while back where he was chatting with a couple of guys for a hour or so and he sounds exactly like Geralt does in the games.

Been thinking about what they could do for The Witcher 4, assuming they decide to continue the franchise without Geralt being playable.

I’d like for Geralt to take the place of Vesemir (i.e. the senior witcher) and perhaps have him be the narrator for the game instead of Dandelion. It would retain Geralt’s deep connection to the series for returning players and provide some great continuity.

I felt the same way at first. I got clobbered by some super cards and wondered WTF the point was. Turned out I just needed to collect more cards first. Check every merchant and buy all the cards they offer, and by the time you’re a few hours into Velen you should have enough for a decent game. Don’t even bother to learn how to play until then.

It is a bit too addictive in some ways. It’s what I imagine it feels like to play an online CCG in real life: why start up a new game in my backlog when I can play another couple rounds of Hearthstone? That’s easy and fun!

It’s not quite that bad since there’s very little metagame. But Gwent’s not going anywhere so you can always play later. You’ve made a reasonable decision.

Ya think?? One of the worst parts of the game. I recommend just looting treasure chests and grabbing a few bags and plants when you trip over them. Don’t obsess over things like mushrooms in caves during important quests. The crafting system is kind of nice because you only have to craft alchemy items once. You can buy ingredients to make up the difference. Midway through the game, I mostly ignore looting except for treasure chests.

On a related note, use blacksmiths to break down junk loot into components. It costs money, but it frees up carry weight and gives you lots of components.

My dream game would be to overhaul the mechanics, then give up some of the characterization and let me make a fully customizable witcher to play in an open world sandbox. Go a little toward the Skyrim model but retain the strong story. The Bloody Baron shows that CDPR can write great quests without relying on existing characters such as Triss, Dandelion, and Geralt (who is kind of useless anyway) as a crutch.

They could even use the same map, or part of it. Maybe in a different time period to mix things up.

In reality I suspect they’ll create a new strong character to control. We’ll probably be stuck with the janky feel for a while too.

Sorry for more reddit spam but this cheered me up this morning: Goose needs a drink (10 MB gif)

For the most part I like the core game play mechanics of the Witcher games so I’d prefer an evolution of the existing core system.

If you are referring to just the skill upgrades and how that is done then sure. They’ve already implemented that someone differently for each game.

Controls, as always, could use some refinement but it doesn’t bother me nearly as much as others. DA:I controls, for example, bother me way way more than this game.

My only real issue at this point is the fact that I am carrying 90 lbs of stuff, and don’t really know where the weight is coming from.

I suspect a lot of it is coming from crafting materials, but it’s hard to tell. The weight listed for objects doesn’t appear to be correct.

For instance, I’ll have something whose weight is listed as 0.4, and I’ll sell 20 of them, and have my weight not drop at all.

More and more is clear to me a small defect within the game: there is nothing to do with the money. The best weapons and armor are crafted, second best are the ones you find in treasure chests or at the end of quest, and very very rarely the traders has anything good to buy. I have more than 6K already, and barely started Novigrad.
