Vesemir comments on it at one point as well, something like how Geralt is now too soft and civilized to be a proper Witcher. :)
He’s manly enough for me to identify with. But ymmv.
Also skyrim controlling better? perhaps, but walking backwards in full plate while swinging a big-ass chuck of iron does not look realistic to me at all. It took me some time to get used to how G moves and fights but i wouldnt have it any other way tbh.
Probably partly because I havent played Witcher 3, but your post leaves me with some questions:
Is Geralt too feminine? How can you be manly in an un-manly way? What is feminized violence? What is the connection to Julian Assange? Is Geralt publishing government and military secrets?
Does Julian Assange punch wild bears to death wearing underwear, boots and gloves?
I can sidestep in combat just fine. I do it all the time. I never lock on to enemies, either.
And…Skyrim?
Yeah, I’m quite enjoying the combat. Weaving in and out amongst a group of foes with directional dodges is pretty engaging for me.
I agree the controls could do with some refining but it’s manageable. Far better than Skyrim’s combat.
A little detail I like: in the map you can read unique descriptions associated with each fast travel signpost. Some of them are funny, or just give you more details of the world.
Also, a quest of a certain witcher…
witcher quest
Lambert’s quest, I mean. I really like the fact it exists, reminding you that Geralt isn’t a unique snowflake, as if he would be the only witcher that lives his own adventures and is pursuing his personal Quest while the other ones just kill monsters for money, but there are other witchers that are in the same situation.
Found a Fallout reference in the village of Lurtch. I will have to paraphrase but:
Male Peasant: “War, war never changes…”
Female Peasant: “Neither do you, you lazy bum”
Male Peasant: “What am I to do? The Army killed the cow and burned the fields”

In combat, the controls are far better than skyrim.
However, the lack of FPS controls is part of what makes movement clumsy when you are just walking around.

To be honest I’m not a fan of all these references, there’s too many of them and they are immersion breaking.
References to Star wars, Tarantino, Fallout, Lotr, and more.
The new weekly free DLC is out. The Galaxy client is a little buggy for me. They don’t show up under the configure menu as content to enable like the first two DLCs. I have to download them manually from the extras page and install them. I’ve tried restarting the client too.
They did, for me.
edit; wtf, they aren’t there anymore. Buggy, indeed.
“On your face” or “in your face”? It, uh, makes a difference…
I’ll add a more recent comparison as well - Dragon Age Inquisition. Same perspective, far worse control for everything. Riding a horse was not only useless, but felt like driving a zamboni. Just walking around I overshot stuff to collect constantly because of how slippery the movement felt and God help you if you slightly faced a bit off in combat if you used something like the rogue’s dashing strike and ended up missing and left a dozen yards past your target.
I’ll take Geralt’s quirks any day.
Edit - Thinking about it a little more, I can’t recall any other really large scale game of a similar type that actually controlled as well or better than this in all of the different interactions available. Maybe the last Zelda game that didn’t involve unnecessary arm flapping (Twilight Princess?). That had all around smooth movement, horse riding, combat, etc…

Eh, in terms of movement, I’d say that Bloodborne/Dark Souls had better movement schemes… And I can’t quite see what about them would make it inapplicable to this game.
Yes you absolutely do lock on to enemies. How do you sidestep? I see no key binds for that.
And…Skyrim?
Yes. A game that gives you actual freedom of movement and the ability to be precise so that the console controls don’t have to take over and hold your hand.
Sorry the controls in Skyrim are much much better (assuming mouse and keyboard). Skyrim combat might be overly simplistic or it might suck for other reasons, but the controls are simply better.
Dark Souls has similarly poor console controls, but at least there you can move backwards in combat.
These games were made for console controllers. The mouse and keyboard controls blow. Don’t get me wrong this is a great game, it’s just hard to enjoy when the fight against the interface is harder than the fight against the monsters.
I never understand people who try to play third person games with a mouse and keyboard.
Sidestep is the B button, by the way. Or whatever the keyboard equivalent is (it’s the same as the dismount button) if you insist on using a silly control mechnanism for a gamepad designed game.
