Damn people must have a lot of free time on their hands! Thanks for the link. :)
Why are you trying to kill me?
Damn, fighting two gargolyes in open air is hard… they fight differently than the first you find in the main quest in a dungeon.
Try the Aard sign on one, crossbow on the other? Getting them on the ground is important i would imagine. :)
FYI crossbow is OP underwater. :p
Nah, the gargoyles are fat stone statues that fly upwards like a jet and then crash down on you, with an AoE stun. They also stomp in the ground like the golems. Fun stuff. I killed them, with some patience and retreating to heal two times. While their aoe abilities are annoying, when they aren’t using them they aren’t that good in melee combat. For these types of enemies I think Yrden works the best, to maximize the window of opportunity where you can damage them and to avoid better their heavy hits in melee.
There was also a level 30 ice elemental, which I left alone. Too much for my level 19 Geralt.
Yeah, I also wanted to comment on the crossbow underwater. It’s too much. I’m explicitly diving underwater when I need to kill a group of sirens (instead of trying to fight them in my little boat), because it’s so cheeseable: infinite bolts that are auto-aimed with great accuracy and instakill everything. It seems they couldn’t get underwater combat right so they tried to do as non-issue as possible giving you godlike tools.
Is anyone in Skellige already? There is a… bug? with the armorer or blacksmith in the capital’s castle. I spoke with the armorer, then I saved the game and exited. When I returned back the armorer had disappeared and I could talk with a blacksmith that was in the same area. He had a unique dialog option, even. I reloaded because I wanted the armorer back! and yeah the armorer is back but now the blacksmith can’t be talked, even if he is there.
Yeah so of course I am playing, I stopped doing main quest in Novigrad (about to meet Zoltan and the amazing Broken Flowers quest, which I did to see if XP would be given, then reloaded) and did contracts and sidequests, which give me XP. Met Lambert, who asked me to go to Skellige, so here I am and mind is blown yet again.
Some things i don’t like about this game:
Geralt is a crappy fighter. Every bandit i run in to does twice as much damage and can take twice as much damage. Shield using bandits are nearly immune to frontal damage of all types and two hand using bandits are super effective in general. Geralt may have the advantage over generic soldiers against monsters, but against humans, he just sucks. The only thing Geralt has going for him is his ability to dodge around. I’d trade all of these minor potions for a shield in a second.
Weapon durability goes down stupid fast. I feel like i’m playing dead island. It is basically a requirement to have weapon repair kits before going in to dungeons because your sword will be falling apart before it is over even if you repair before starting.
Weight is once again annoying, possibly even more so than a bethesda game. You just acquire so much junk in Witcher 3 and you can’t store it anywhere that i’m aware of. Thus you need to go back to town pretty often to sell stuff. This really sucks in an open world game so i’m not really sure why these companies keep going out of their way to make it annoying.
Weight is a limitation, sure but with the upgraded “horse storage” you get to carry a lot. Also, just sell all your junk, you’ll never need it and it’s worth a ton of gold. You’ll never need all those skins for example, you’ll find plenty of leather strips for crafting, I just sold 70 of them.
You can’t just charge in with a frontal assault all the time. Parry and counterattack. Use your mobility to gain advantageous position – if they’re blocking to the front, attack from the rear. Use your signs. Throw bombs. Geralt has more than enough tools to decimate human opponents, but you have to use them. And why would you ever want a shield when you have Quen? :)
This is not my complaint.
Bandits are better swordsmen and have better swords than Geralt.
Bandits are better at parrying and have better armor/endurance than Geralt.
The only thing that makes Geralt able to defeat them is his mobility, which is more of an AI thing than anything else. If the AI was able to dodge like the player, you would simply lose in a 1 vs 1 battle against a bandit.
Signs are mostly ineffective at level 7, except for Quen which while good, is NOWHERE near a shield. Quen breaks super easy. Maybe later on that changes, but i can’t see how Quen can ever approach how good a shield appears to be.
Given how much better even a generic bandit is in a stand up fight, it kind of makes me laugh how random soldiers in the game actually fear witchers. These are not master swordsman, they are random deserters or bandits, not even bandit leaders. My sword should be better than theirs. I should be a better swordsman than them. My armor should be better than theirs. etc etc.
In the interest of disclosure, i’m playing on the 2nd highest difficulty, level 7ish in the 2nd map and am focusing on light attacks. I do not have any bonuses to signs in my skills, and only have a couple random ones in my equipment.

If I’m disinclined towards CCG’s and bypassed dice and fight club in Witcher 2, is there any reason to bother w/ Gwent?
Murbella is doing something wrong.

Man, when Geralt runs into bandits who are a few levels lower, the ensuing fight is like the briefcase scene in Collateral.
This has been my experience as well.
I disliked Dice in W2, but Gwent has be crazy hooked, I wish it was a standalone game at this point that I could play on my tablet.
I am gonna collect them all! :D
Yeah I am murdering bandits left and right even at higher levels than me, shields or not. It is beautiful dance of death.

I can’t say I’ve been having trouble with bandits on the 2nd hardest difficulty level. My main sign is Quen, but the ‘force push’ one can come in handy when fighting against a human group. It may knock some of them down so you can try to thin out their ranks. Sometimes it requires patience, because you need to attack and not get surrounded. I have a tendency to ignore bombs and potions until I get in trouble, but they can definitely help.
Murbella is level 7, which is the source of most of the “problems.” Gain a few levels and hey, you have more carrying capacity, you’ve found sturdier weapons, and you’re kicking butt in combat (both because you’ve got more skill points and because you’re more likely to be fighting guys lower level than you.)
I do think the idea that Geralt is a terrible fighter is delightful, though. Yeah, at the start he can only take on a half-dozen guys his own level. MEDIOCRE.

You can oneshot a full health bandit if you use axii on them first.
Here is one reason that I’m not worried about Geralt’s swordsmanship:

Yeah, bandits are super easy if you play Geralt to his strengths. I’m playing on BnBB and I’ve had no problems slaughtering groups of bandits way higher than my level.
