All I have to say is playing as Ciri got much more interesting this time around.
I’ve had random bandits/monsters (not leaders or anything) that seem to take a lot more damage then other equal leveled creatures. It may very well be a bug he’s experiencing.

Double jump/roll also helps you get up mountain sides.

Forget the oils, they make a difference, but not a large one. Given the minor level difference between you and the enemy type you are most certainly not grounding the spectre. By that I mean they spend most of their type partially phased out, receiving only a small fraction of any damage done to them. Use Yrden or the Moon Dust bomb to fully materialize them otherwise it takes forever to kill them. Note I found Yrden difficult to use against them. The circle is small and they seem to avoid it as much as possible. Moon Dust bombs on the other hand make them cake.
I’m only about 5 hours into the game, and it’s finally starting to get its hooks into me. When I did the first sidequest in White Orchard, helping the dwarf, I was kind of underwhelmed. But after running into the bear and getting destroyed, and trying to fight the wraith in the Well quest and getting destroyed, I have to admit, I was really intrigued.
I finally got good enough at the combat system that I was able to defeat both those enemies, and just when I thought I was kicking ass (10 wolves? No problem), I ran into a bandit with a shield. Oh shit! What was that part in the tutorial about parrying? I totally forgot by now. Luckily I used the sign for mind control, and while the bandit was dazed, a heavy attacked lopped off his head! Oh man!
Now I’m totally sold on this game. I love a combat system that pushes back. I’ll have to scroll through my tutorial messages to find out what the hell is up with parrying.
Just press left trigger at the moment of enemy’s attach and Geralt will parry most effectively.
Oh my, godlings are adorable.
Aren’t they?! Crones on the other hand…
Uh… that’s the opposite definition of level scaling. It’s a term usually used for games where the content is scaled to your level. Your problem was that the Noonwraith wasn’t scaled to your level, so it has tons of HP in comparison with your small damage.
Try the “Grave Hag??” at level 14, bet you’ll have some excuse as to how she is balanced as well.
“??” is relative to your level, when it’s too above from yours. Some monsters that are ?? at level 10 will have a normal level when you are level 15.
In Skellige islands I like how different they are from the main continent. It isn’t only that is more mountainous, it snows and it uses a colder palette. It’s also little details like the sea, which is a bit more transparent and it has a violent hue (check in the coast). Or the buildings, both exterior and interior, with a totally different design from the huts from Velen/Novigrad. And how because usually the village are in a little bay or around mountains, the layout of the villages is different too.

I couldn’t get into the first Witcher at all, despite giving it a few good attempts. I found the combat really clunky and the story/characters to be impenetrable and dull. Is it worth me trying the Witcher 2 & 3? Is the story a continuation like the Mass Effect games?
Found the griffin armor schematics and… I don’t really like the look of it. :/

For sure. If you really want to play Witcher 3 you could even skip 2 (although it’s a a good game so you should play it anyway) and just read up on the story. Fwiw, 2 and 3 have more continuity than 1 and 2.
Thanks Paul!
So far, this White Orchard area reminds me a lot of Witcher 1’s Act 1. In the end, that’s the only part of Witcher 1 that I ended up playing (twice, after I lost my saved game in Act 2). In the end, Act 1 in that game ended up being a nice microcosm of the game as a whole. You had a main quest, and several side quests, and hints of a bigger story. White Orchard is starting to feel very similar. Maybe in the end, I’ll end up completing only the White Orchard part of Witcher 3, who knows?
Yeah, they improved in both regards, characterization and combat. The story isn’t so much a direct continuation like in ME, but they refer to some past characters/events.
Or playing with a mouse you press RMB just before the enemy attack will hit you, this initiates a counter move that lets you get free hits in.
There are many ways to do level scaling and they are using some of them in this game. An example: Do the Hattori quest while at a lower level than recommended and your reward will be scaled down to your level. If you get the blueprint for that exact same reward, it has a much higher level requirement.
Yes, it has some loot scaling. But no enemy level scaling.
I’ve been paying attention to how much xp I was gaining in some quests because the bug and in truth lots of quests barely give xp. One gave 25xp, other with Yen which was super long, with 15-16 steps and finished in a tough boss fight? 50xp, thank you very much.
There’s something wrong with the gold amount as well, I’m not complaining I have more crowns than I need, but often I get something like 10 gold for a level appropriate quest. wtf.
