Man fucking Gwent. I’m tired of getting my ass kicked repeatedly by players in Novigrad with superior decks. I’m at 56 fucking hours in this game and I only have 1 fucking hero card and everyone else I go up against knocks my dick in the dirt. It would be nice if there was someway you could tell before hand if your deck will stand up to a potential opponent’s stack before starting a match. I thought there would be a bit more depth to Gwent but he who has the superior deck will win every time. If I were a mere mortal I would probably let my opponent win if he had two big fucking swords on his back and can shoot fire from his hands.
You should be further along than that. Did you play most of the merchants and in keeps in Velen? Did you buy all the cards from them, when available?
It is actually beneficial to have less cards in your deck, that way you don’t pull crap level 1/2/3 cards if possible. Sadly once you get a few hero cards and a spy card / scorch / decoy, you pretty much can handle anything.
Yeah, you can get good cards from playing merchants and such sometimes. Also, be aware of the strengths/perk of each deck. For instance, most monster decks rely heavily on melee, so bringing Biting Frost can make a huge difference.
Also, you can choose different leaders with different perks. A Northern Realms deck with lots of powerful siege cards benefits a lot from picking the Siegemaster version of Foltest, which gives you a free double-the-power-horn on the siege line when you need it.

Gwent is pay to win, but hero cards are basically irrelevant except for a handful of exceptions (Avallach, Yen, Geralt/Ciri). And assuming you did a reasonably good job of buying/winning what’s available from Velen, Novigrad should not be much of an bump in difficulty. What cards do you have available, and what kind of a deck do you make out of them?
If you’re playing Northern Realms, prioritize cards in roughly this order: any cards with a spy ability (to be played asap on round 1), as many decoys as you have (primarily to pick up any opponent spies on round 1, your own medics on later rounds), medics (preferably pick up any spies on round 2 you couldn’t decoy on round 1), 10+ heroes, cards that you have multiples of that have tight bond, 1-2 commander’s horns, then fill out the required number of unit cards with whatever is highest value. I prefer the clear skies Foltest as a leader as insurance against weather cards. If you know you’re playing against a monster deck, put a couple of biting frost cards in as well.

All good tips. Although I’d suggest a Siege Foltest for that massive boost to the last line. Stack some trebuchets and ballistas and steamroll every enemy. I very rarely needed clear sky card, but I had one in my deck just in case. I’d definitely not take more than 1 frost bite, clear sky, 1 or 2 decoy and 1 or 2 horns. Otherwise you risk getting too many non-unit cards at the start.

Yeah, Siege Foltest is also valid. The difference probably comes down to play style there, I tend to believe that the only thing that can lose me a match is weather, so being able to mitigate that is priority number one. To me the big advantage of Siege Foltest is that you’re guaranteed to be able to stall using the leader ability. With Clear Skies a weather effect needs to be active, which sucks on any matches that come down to who can stall for longer.
I agree that you don’t want too many special cards, but it’s impossible to have too many decoys! Literally; since there’s only 3 in the whole game and I’d generally be happy to draw all 3 in the starting hand :-) They are basically always going to be better than your average unit card.
- If you can pick up a spy using a decoy, it’s an instant card and tempo advantage.
- If there are no spies and you don’t feel you can win round 1, it allows you to pull out your heavy hitters for a rematch. You don’t even cede any card advantage here, since unless the opponent has a huge lead they won’t feel confident in passing first.
- If you win round 1 and have decoys left over for round 2, you can decoy your medics, get your best cards back from the discard pile, and play them again.
Playing that pair of Catapults with Tight Bond is great. Getting to play them twice is even better :-)
Only thing I hate about Siege Foltest (and the double catapults) is waiting around for the AI to play Scorch.
The 1.07 is actually going to be a pretty large patch. We are already working on it. It’s not going to be too long before it comes out. Can’t talk about the detailed list of changes but it will features A LOT of fixes.
I might be done with the game by then but it’s about time they addressed some of the non-critical glitches like beard pop-in and whatnot.

Mutagen slot fix would be pretty nice.
32 hours in I think I might start cautiously reading this thread. On the basis that spoilers will at first be for the parts I’ve seen :)
I like the free-DLC haircuts.

Umm… I held off downloading patches for the PC version and now I want to patch up. The problem is I can’t find where I need to get the patch and I’m not sure if the latest patch is comprehensive or if I have to download the patches I’ve missed. I’m currently at 1.03. Where can I get 1.06 and do I have to apply 1.04 and 1.05 before I upgrade to 1.06? Years of using Steam have really spoiled me.
What are you using? GoG? GoG Galaxy will patch it up just like Steam.

I’m using GoG. I don’t have GoG galaxy and I was able to patch this to 1.03 but I can’t remember how. Also I can’t find the free DLC anywhere. Ugh.
Edit: Ah, ok, I have to go through the gog website, not Witcher website. Cool.
Is there any way to tell which of the merchants you have yet to defeat at least once?

I think Siege Foltest is the easiest deck to build early. I think loading up on biting frost is helpful as Monsters is almost almost melee and Nilf and Elves can have melee heavy decks as well. Decoys are great, I would recommend 1 decoy to every spy card you have, which is eventually means 3 decoys as you can get at least 4 spys as NR.
I find its fairly easy to bait the AI into scorch. I just try to avoid having multiples of the highest strength cards on the field until he has played at least one scorch. For whatever reason, I am not sure I can recall the AI playing more than one scorch per match.
The only way I know of is to save before you play them and reload if you lose because that way the text color of the option to play them is different from dialogues you have already chosen. It’s worth pointing out that there are more people to play than random cards to win so at some point, fairly late, you will stop winning cards from guys you have never played.
Just did the long main quest at the beginning of the endgame I guess. What a fun time. No one is doing anything like this in videogames right now, at least not that I’m aware of. Maybe some of the AAA games.
I do feel like CDPR is trying to tell us something by giving Lambert an American accent. :)
Everybody in this thread has been very well behaved when it comes to spoilers. Hints and so (or hidden behind the spoiler tag) but nothing I found spoilery when reading it at the time .
And, I just finished the game. Won’t put anything in this thread :)
Could not help looking up the various permutations and will park it for a while before doing a 2nd run, probably when the expansions are released.
I stand by my previous impression. IMHO the storytelling, worldbuilding, attention to details and overall quality of the universe are unparalleled and a true masterpiece. A+ all the way, all the time. The game mechanics themselves, felt ultimately not outright bad but less good/interesting. Still, what a tremendous experience. CDPR at the absolute top of their game with TW3, they put the bar soooo high. Anybody working in the industry and not completely tied down to their current lives/location should seriously consider applying for a job with CDPR IMHO.
Now to hope CDPR are able to achieve the same level of quality for the world in Cyberpunk, I am so looking forward to see what they can create in a more free-form universe.
The start of the thread is funny - everyone’s like Open World! Nooooo…
