You should go to the nearest question mark.

Yeah, for me, I would only run directly to the question marks and pretty much ignore everything until I got to the marker. This way, I explore the country side, actively looking for interesting things, and there’s a real sense of discovery when I do find something. The question mark approach, for me, was checking things off a list.
However, as I’ve commented before, my play style in open world RPGs has always been more about the exploring than “winning.”
I do have a strong dislike of fist figthing. It seems to be combat with the enjoyment removed. Any fistfight I’m allowed to draw a sword or set fire to those assholes, that’s what I do post haste.
That’s how I am as well. I wish there was an option to swap the mini map for just a compass.
Sun rises in the east, man…
Hah, fair enough. I might have to give that a try if I can get it to show the time with the mini map off.
Also, the big tree that you can see most of the time is in the southeast, and you can also see Novigrad pretty often, which is in the North. I’m doing a 2nd playthrough on Deathmarch with everything in the HUD turned off, and it’s been glorious.
I agree about the compass. I’ll take that over a mini-map any day. Every open-world game should have a compass.
Rock8man, maybe try setting difficulty level to Easy for just that one fight, to get through it?
I’m playing most of the game on easy because, screw dying, with these ridiculously long load times. Since combat hasn’t been challenging, Witcher 3 is more of a beautifully rendered Adventure game than an RPG for me. I’m fine with it.
That would be annoying, yes. However, if you keep forgetting to load the save just before you got into this fight instead of just hitting continu, I’d say you’ve got bigger problems… ;-)

Sounds like some nightmare version of Groundhog day.
Lower the difficulty to easy, beat the 4 guys, raise it again to the desired level, save the game.

Full confession here: I’ve got the difficulty set to next to easiest. I hate melee combat as a rule, my reflexes are not that great when it comes to frantic button pushing, and my enjoyment and satisfaction from games like this comes from the story and the exploration, not really figuring out how to beat a pack of bad guys 4 levels above me. And for me, that works very well: I still need to plan my combat, I still run into bad guys I need to run away from (I just ran into some bad guys with the red skull next to their name, got one separated from the pack thinking, OK, I can beat this guy, and realized after he killed me in 3 swipes, nope, run away!) And even bad guys I SHOULD be able to defeat (unless they are lower in level) take some planning to beat. But it avoids the frustration of having to reload over and over most of the time.
The way I figure it, I am the damned Witcher. Yeah, I’m gonna get scars, I’m going to need healing, but I should be a bad ass on the battlefield.
But, having learned to actually enjoy battling a single enemy that is high enough I can’t just swing away, where I need to thrown down the trap sign and evade and get behind him and hit him then evade again as he faces me, etc. I can understand those who want combat to be difficult.
BTW - did I just discover something? PS4, pressing right trigger to put down the trap spell (Yyrden? Forget the spelling) and then accidentally held the trigger down and instead of the circle I got a splash of color beneath me. Are there different effects based on how I hold the trigger? (I have two advancements of it in my slots.)
If you spent and equipped the talent points, there are indeed two versions of each sign available.
The fist fights are some of the hardest fights in the game, IMHO. It is a combination of the confined space and the small damage you do vs huge damage they do means a long no mistake fight. I am playing on Death March and I swear “the tailor” was almost one hitting me because if you miss the counter he just strings together the jab and short uppercut.
Tip I Found/my strategy: that you can hold block forever and take no damage, this helps if you get backed into a corner and they are punching in close. Sidestep while holding block to get out of the corner, back off, wait for their “off balance roundhouse”, counter + two quick attacks (never a 3rd no matter how bad you want to), back away and repeat.

Cool. I’m surprised that somehow I didn’t get a tip in-game of how to use them both - I had no idea.
Just wait till you fight the Champion of Skellige. :D
Oh Jeff. You still have the skulls turned on :(
I got home today.
I REMEMBERED what was going to happen when I started the game. Why? Because I posted about it yesterday and read your comments. Thank you for the feedback.
I only had one shot at this, if I didn’t want to repeat the seemingly infinitely long loading screen, so I decided to try Ejosotoc’s strategy first: just hold block. And then evaluate from there.
And that was enough. When I just blocked everything, my dwarf friend took care of all the enemies, just like my companion down in Velen used to take care of quite a few of my foes down there. All I had to do was block until he got rid of the guys, one by one.
I did try some of Ejosotoc’s other advice: trying to parry and then two fast attacks, but I almost got my ass kicked as a result. So I went back to just blocking. Phew!
In this fight at least, I didn’t have to learn fist fighting yet.

Wait - I can turn those off???
They’re part of enemy health bars I think. You can turn those off…
