Ok, I just looked up some ending guides.
mild spoilers about late game

Apparently my biggest mistake was telling her “relax, you don’t have to be good at everything”, which is what led to my drinking with her instead of having a snowball fight apparently. And accompanying her when she talked to the Sorceresses of the Lodge. Apparently that lowered her confidence in herself. And telling her to calm down when she was in Avallac’s lab. Damn it. At least I’ve got a saved game before that last one. I can not tell her to Calm Down this time and see where that leads instead.

Sorry, put in a spoiler tag, I got confused between the two threads.

Yep, that’s one of the aspects criticized of the game.
ending system
You didn’t have a snowball fight? Sorry, the world is doomed because of that. Tough luck.

edit: Paul is right, technically it’s more like Ciri defeats the White Frost but she dies doing it. Maybe.
Do the right thing and you’re screwed anyway? Very Central Europe. That’s probably on their flag.

For Tim’s peace of mind

Isn’t it more like world is the same, it’s just that Ciri doesn’t come back and Geralt is pissed/deppressed ?

Why are you doofs talking about this in the normal thread? Show some consideration.

If they do ever make an Enchanced Edition or remake of Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the number one request from me would be add more character models to the game. Ever since May I’ve been looking at the same faces over and over and over. Sometimes it was so confusing, because it really did turn out to be an older character who reappeared again, but the vast majority of the time, it was just the same models being re-used, but different characters and different voice actors.

My other wishlist item would be an optional first person camera that automatically pulls back into 3rd person when it combat mode.

When I was done with the game, out of curiosity’s sake, I turned the ? symbols on the map back on, just to see how many I missed. Well, as I expected, despite my vigorous exploration of Velen, I missed quite a few in Velen. What I was really shocked by was the number I’d missed in Skellige. Holy smokes! There’s all kinds of question marks all over those little islands everywhere. I just went to one or two that didn’t have a quick-travel marker and found nothing there, so I never went to any of them again.

I’m so glad I turned those damned question marks off after the starting town. Although, I would still advise all new players to keep the question marks on in that starting town, because it shows you the kind of things to look out for when those things are later turned off.

Half of the ? in Skellige are mostly sunken treasures. Not a lot of variety.

You can also not turn the question marks and ignore them :P.

I can’t believe Rock8 finished the Witcher - it’s like the real ending :)

I just hope Mrs Rock8 wasn’t too much of a problem.

Don’t forget about JeffL. He’s only level 16 and plays regularly. We’re all pulling for you JeffL. You can do it! Just keep playing a little everyday if you can. It’s a massive commitment, this game, but worth it. You just have to give up most other games and movies and novels.

About the origins of the HoS story, from /r/Witcher

big spoilers
I’ve seen some interesting speculation about it and it’s apparent that when crafting the story CD Projekt was inspired by many different sources including Stephen King but I haven’t seen much mention of the old Polish legend that HOS really does take a lot from: Sir Twardowski.

There are many similarities between the protagonists including their appearance and powers, the devil figure including his nickname Mister Mirror and even the endings. I thought some people might be interested to hear more.

"According to an old legend, Twardowski was a nobleman who lived in Krakow in the 16th century. He sold his soul to the devil in exchange for great knowledge and magical powers. However, Twardowski wanted to outwit the devil by including a special clause in the contract, stating that the devil could only take Twardowski’s soul to Hell during his visit to Rome – a place the sorcerer never intended to go.

With the devil’s aid, Twardowski quickly rose to wealth and fame, eventually becoming a courtier of King Sigismund Augustus, who sought consolation in magic and astrology after the death of his beloved wife. He was said to have summoned the ghost of the late queen to comfort the grieving king, using a magic mirror.

After years of evading his fate, Twardowski was eventually tricked by the devil and caught not in the city, but at an inn called Rome. While being spirited away, Twardowski started to pray to the Virgin Mary, who made the devil drop his victim midway to Hell. Twardowski fell on the Moon where he lives to this day."

Fired this up last night and quickly realized I don’t remember how to play it anymore. :-/

I’m being knocked about so much the long load times are starting to annoy me.

I picked it up on sale, finally, and am about three hours in. I love the environment. Killed the wraith at the well, caught the arsonist, now going to meet the Nilfgaardians.

Cool! Keep the impressions coming. Always interested in hearing how folks react, whether it’s good, bad or indifferent.

Sure. My opening impressions are that the environment and writing are very high quality. Graphics are great, but its the environment I like (e.g. Far Cry 4 has arguably better graphics but I wouldn’t get as immersed in it).

Also the games strikes a tone where the writers treat you the player and you the character as an adult; games are getting better at this but it still feels unique and satisfying. I did the mini-quest to find the frying pan… not only is the old lady voiced extremely well, but the items in the house; tidbits of information, an incomplete story but you get a sense of what happened. I really, really like that.

So far so good.

I’ve been holding off on this for a couple of reasons. 1) Don’t hate me, but Skyrim never grabbed me the way it did most people and 2) I didn’t want to gamble $60 that Witcher 3 would be better. Thanks to the Halloween sale and the “how haven’t you played Witcher 3?” comments from people, I finally pulled the trigger last Friday.

The game grabbed me right away. The tutorial taught you the controls while inside a genuinely touching story that lead nicely in to the start of the game itself. Right now, I’m running around in quest overload. There is SO MUCH TO DO, I get overwhelmed constantly. But it’s not one of those “go here, get some quests, go there, get some quests”, it’s just like these quests seamlessly show up and I’m compelled to work on them. After 4 days of off and on playing, I’m only level 5 and yet I feel like I’ve played the heck out of the game already. Very impressed by every aspect of the game. The combat is fun and, at times, challenging. The quest system follows the lessons of previous open world games and doesn’t feel like random-ass tacked on side quests that are just there to slow you down.

My only complaint, and it’s a minor one, is that you can definitely feel the console influence in the PC version. There is no doubt that it is a multi-platform game. They do a good job with the KB&M controls, but at times I get the impression that I really need to be using a controller for the menus and combat to flow the way the designers intended.

You’re coming from the same place I did. I tried to get into Skyrim 4 times before I stuck with it. I never thought Skyrim was great (especially the combat), but the world was beautiful enough and fun enough to explore that I stuck with it. I liked The Witcher 3 so much more than Skyrim. Mainly because the writing is so much better and the combat is pretty good.

I used to exclusively be a kb+m player. I started using a controller with Dark Souls and have been getting more proficient with it ever since. Now there are a lot of games that feel better with a controller so it paid off.

Yeah I agree. I have about 80 hours into Skyrim which is not a lot. Fun to explore, and I did enjoy the meta-game of mods too:).

I agree about using a controller. My problem is I was using my PS3 pad through Windows 7, but Windows 10 doesn’t get along with it well with the PS3 controller at all. Rather than mess with it to get it to work, I will buy a new pad. I don’t mind the $50 but my current problem is I want to see how the Steam controller pans out over the next couple months.

One thing that a lot of us did that can maybe mitigate the “too much to do!” thing is to go into the options and use the HUD section to turn off the question marks. You’ll find a number of them “organically” anyway, just by doing regular quests and exploring, and it helps to ease you in a bit. You can always turn them back on later if you like, too!

I second triggercut’s question mark recommendation.
