I find it hilarious that the billion or so Christians on the planet (ok, maybe less than 1% of that Billion) think that their prophecies/timetables/religious events are going to control the fate of the other 5 billion. I mean, it’d be pretty damn funny if all of a sudden a giant anaconda appeared in space to swallow the world and the Mbuti tribe in the Congo released a public statement: “See! We were right!”.

Well, since the basic idea behind “truth” is that it remains true even if you believe it or not.

E.g., you don’t have to believe gravity exists to be attracted to the Earth’s surface.

Anyway, the “666” prophecy itself came true a long long time ago (it was about the Roman Empire), so obviously the Christians were on to something. What’s so funny 'bout that? :)

There’s no earthly way of knowing which direction we are going. There’s no knowing where we’re rowing, or which way the river’s flowing. Is it raining? is it snowing? is a hurricane a-blowing? Bah! Not a speck of light is showing, so the danger must be growing. Are the fires of hell a-glowing? Is the grisly reaper mowing? YES! The danger must be growing, for the rowers keep on rowing and they’re certainly not showing any signs that they are slowing!

Uhh… That prophecy did not come into existence (the number) until AFTER the roman empire. It is also was wrong. The number of the beast is 566, not 666, at least according to the romans.

You see, there was this game Romans played. All roman letters had a numerical equivalent, a double meaning if you will. Then they would take some famous persons name, create a numerical string, and then pose a riddle with it.

The one that Christianity stole, and got wrong, was “566 is the number of the beast” from there you needed to figure out who they were talking about. I can’t remember which one of the two off the top of my head was the answer, but it was either Nero or Caligula. I think it was Nero though.

Just because someone tells you something is true doesn’t make it so. This applies to everything. Thus the need for study, reflection, etc.

I posit that you believe gravity is true because you experience it, not just because someone once told you about it.
