instant/resume will help with stupid games equipped by bad save systems, like savepoints or items in the gameworld you have to interact to save.
plus its a cool thing to save the planet, ducks and forest and that crap
Fantastic. Honestly did not know this.
That’s a problem particularly on public transport. If you have any tips on turning it off I’d like to hear them.
While nice, not really an advantage.
Most console games have shitty save systems, so i just leave my ps3 on and change the input mode. I think i’ve had the last of us running on my ps3 for a week without playing it.
As long as the thing doesn’t sound like an airliner crashed in to the side of your room, i can’t see this being different.
It would be much nicer if they forced developers to have modern save/load systems including save anywhere, naming saves, no limits on save counts, auto saving, etc.
It was one of the first things they announced about the PS4 in February.
I saw that they announced the suspend feature (like an ipad has) but never heard the ps4 has instant switching (a la alt tab on a pc). Does the PS4 have the latter?

It has the advantage of saving you money with lower electric bills. Leaving a ps3 on day and night is something I would not recommend.
Yes, it multitasks. Vita does, too. The UI video they released after the E3 conference shows the task switching.
Plus the last console I was able to do that with was the early days of the 360. Ever since then, consoles are used as much or more for movie and TV watching than for playing games. The chances of no one else (including myself) needing to use the console for another purpose while you pause the game are very very low.
The idea of multitasking and suspension of games at any point is delicious. I know that handhelds have had that feature for a while, but I was always jealous of that, thinking “hey, why can’t the rest of us gamers who don’t use handhelds have access to this awesome feature?”
It would be great if the PS4 does have this feature but not sure if this video shows exactly what I mean.
I get that both the Xbox One and PS4 will allow you to switch from games to TV (X1 only) to the Web to a bluray to a Netflix movie to video chat without switching inputs. Heck, I can do that NOW on the PS3 and 360 (PS3 only for blu rays, of course).
But I’m asking if both will give you the ability to effectively multitask, running games and other apps simultaneously like you can on an actual PC. The Xbox One reveal video - assuming that was the actual OS they were using - showed them switching from a racing game then instantly to Netflix and then back to the game. Clearly, they had launched the Netflix app before (it was mid movie) so it really felt like alt-tabbing between Steam and Netflix on the PC.

Still not sure I get the TV thing. Why in the world would I suddenly switch to Netflix in the middle of a race? Am I that desperate to see if my queue has updated?
Because your wife walked into the room and wants to see something. She doesn’t care about your game and doesn’t want to wait. Before, you would just quit the game so as not incur her wrath, but now you can pause it instead and get back to it later.

Eh. For me that has happened exactly, hmmm, zero times. I either save and flip over to Netflix (“OK, let me save this and bring up Netflix” “OK, I’ll grab some popcorn and something to drink while you do that, want anything?”) or pause and hit the button to switch to the Roku. You still have to bring up Netflix, find what you want to watch, load it up, etc. which takes more time than saving the game and getting to the Netflix app.

Wow. Bitchy if she can’t wait a second for input to swap on the tv… If it’s urgently netflix, that makes no sense, but would be available on every other screen in the home.
I just do not get the advantage to this. IS it better to be able to switch instantly to netlfix? Sure! Is it important in any way (worth $100 more, worth slightly shittier system in general)? No.
This was possible for me before the PS3 died, but since then, the 360 has been the only netflix device in the house, so you can’t just switch without quitting. And I don’t know of a single racing game that lets you save instantly within the race you’re on (which was the example being talked about, and is a good one, because racing games don’t allow mid-race saves).
She sounds like a real sweetheart…

I’ve said plenty of times, “Sure, honey, just wait 'till I get to a save point”, which then took a long time to get to.

I’ve done that, or, ‘start it in the other room, I need 15 minutes here.’ Or ‘sure!’ if the game was fun, I can just exit without saving - I do not mind replaying it.
First, it’s not clear that the PS4 doesn’t do this. Jazar seemed to think so and he definitely has great intel on Sony stuff.
Second, god yes I want this. Hell, yes. I often sit down in front of my TV and know I want to unwind but I’m not exactly sure how I will take that break. And sometimes – once I think I have settled on what I’ll do – I change my mind. I’ll start playing a game and realize I’m more in the mood for watching something.
I can’t imagine people not loving this, using it either regularly (people like me) or rarely, but appreciating the convenience when they do
Why cant you just switch video inputs to watch something?
If you want to watch netflix, why not just insist that the games you buy have half way decent save systems instead of moronic checkpoints?
