Not so much. I strongly, strongly expect to see heavy usage of GPGPU physics on the new gen. (Especially on the PS4, that lovely memory bandwidth!)

On a PC the speed bumps on CPU wouldn’t make any difference, but this is a console and there developers do adapt there code to code to take advantage of the architecture, and clearly this generation is different from the previous, this time Xbox has the more non standard architecture has opposed to Playstation, but unlike the PS3 that had a advantage on paper Xbox one doesn’t have that advantage so it that is probably why they pushing for these small upgrades with the hopes that they can remain competitive with some custom adjustments to the code. I think a year form launch we can a get an idea if they were successful or not, in maintaining multiplatform games performance similar between consoles.

Nvidia is optimizing PhysX to perform well on those eight-core console CPUs, to remain relevant in an era when every console has an AMD GPU. If nobody uses PhysX, they’ll lose half their benchmark advantage in the graphics card war.
So those not-very-fast Jaguar cores may be pretty heavily utilized for some more games. I’d expect the 10% CPU clock advantage to be noticeable in such cases.

10% is not very noticeable to end users begin with, even when those edge cases of perfect performance scaling come into play. Better than nothing, though.

XB1 Beta Dashboard leak! Get it while it’s hot!

Hope the kid doesn’t get into too much trouble posting that vid…

I’m more worried about what happens when it turns out to be Penello’s kid. Kid can get chastised. Dad might lose his job

So, where else it is? heh.

It is as if they took a mobile phone and made the screen larger.
I suppose it will look good if your couch is 10m away from the tv though.

Windows 1.0 - Monocrome icons. Because of technology limitations, space saving.
Windows 3.0 - 16 colours icons, with a 3D effects. 3D interfaces looks good and modern. Fake 3D effects everywhere.
Windows 8 Metro Inferface - Monochrome on icons, copies from Zune.
XBox One - Monochrome on icons, copied from Windows 8.

:-O

Your move, Microsoft.

key question answered for me: that is indeed one speedy interface. That’s definitely on my list for next gen - beyond games, make it easy for me to quickly access the other features on your console.

Was this not expected?
Of course the XB1 interface would be as close as possible to Win8/windows phone. What would Microsoft gain by making a separate style for the XB1? The idea is to have the same interface for all your connections to Microsoft media.

Yeah, I don’t know why some people are surprised. Microsoft has made it clear the “modern” look is going to be placed across devices.

Looks like it is built for voice input with all the boxes to navigate.

Seems to me that metro is not only attractive but well-suited to a 10ft UI. Those giant square targets are terrible for a mouse+keyboard, but I can see them working great on gamepads, and they are obviously quite legible at a distance. The PS4 UI has giant square targets too, they just aren’t all filled with solid colors.

Yeah, I installed Win8 on my ‘media center’ PC, a little Acer nettop connected to my 37" TV, and it works well. The problems people normally have with it on a desktop (full screen apps, big tiles) go away somewhat sitting across the room. Standard desktop mode is a PITA, with small text and button targets.

So update me, which one am I supposed to buy again, PS4 or Xbox One?

Buy an Ouya before they go out of business, so you can later sell it as a collector’s item.

Wait after release. We don’t really know anything yet. Both consoles can be shit. One can be shit and the other not. Both can be stellar good products. We don’t know.
