Microsoft Studios has just hired Jonathan Ross.

Albert Penello of Microsoft said on Twitter that the video is accurate as far as depicting the kind of speed and responsiveness you’ll see in the final UI. His explanation for why it’s a mock up instead of an actual UI walkthrough?

I smell BS.

Yeah BS, there are several UI screens with licensed music/movies/tv references in some tiles.

Penello is full of preposterous excuses lately.

Sounds legit. I’m sure it’s impossible for Microsoft to control what tiles and content appears on the XB1’s screens when recording a UI demo!

It’s a ridiculous assertion. Licensing issues aside, it’s dumb to expect to switch from a movie to a multiplayer match of any game that quickly.

The icon of internet explorer is disgusting, gross. You don’t go in public and say “Internet Explorer”. Except maybe in some parts of china where everyone is stuck on a pirate copy of Windows XP with IE8.

Hey, I can do it in my pc. :P

There is some logic there… not much sense in keeping two versions of code with the same base functionality up to date, really. So, integrate the one that has it’s own external team to update as necessary, go through the pain of interfacing it once, and let the automatic back-end upgrades keep you happy for years to come.

Of course, you do need to build the interface properly, but the idea is pretty sound.

It’s a shame the UI is already covered with so many unlicensable ads they can’t even record a video of it!

Probably more likely that whatever advertising agreements are in place don’t provide revenue to MS until launch date and they don’t want to be providing free advertising before then!

This is a silly explanation why just not say this is an ad and that there will be direct footage when the system is ready.

Surprised this isn’t up here already.

So yes, 900p vs 720p. Even the ps4 can’t handle full 1080p. Deeply disappointing. And various upscaling and texture artifacts on both sides.

Interesting how well the XBone does in that. The post-processing filter on PS4 (they could have easily used this on XBone too) is kind of hit or miss.

IGN BF4 video without the DF capture screwup of the contrasts. Also has multiplayer of both.

Microsoft takes advantage of Sony’s media stumble. http://www.quartertothree.com/fp/2013/11/01/xbox-one-doesnt-play-vinyl-records-either/

So it plays audio cds and they’re “working on” DNLA and it doesn’t support MP3 playback? That might be better than Sony but only just barely.

Well, I never stored mp3s on my 360 either, so I don’t mind that it won’t be able to rip or store mp3s on the XB1. As long as it can stream it from my computer while I play games, that’s what I want. And parsing their statement, that could be true, but it isn’t fully confirmed yet. We’ll see. I’m one step closer to canceling my PS4 preorder and keeping my XB1 pre-order. Which is kind of making me sad.

Another article from Digital Foundry that’s an amusing read. I love the quote from Microsoft guy they put at the top. Dismissing the talked about specs at the time and saying to wait for the games…don’t judge until you start seeing the games and their performance. Wonder if he wishes to have that comment back.

Eurogamer’s first Secret Developer piece also leads off with the same quote as the Digital Foundry piece. Both articles are very good and well worth reading. After reading them both, I feel much better about potentially canceling my PS4 pre-order in favor of the XB1. After all, the games I want are generally going to be on that side, and in the end the game experiences are what will count, not pixel counts and memory speeds and what-not.

Digital Foundry also has some good advice for Microsoft in that they should be more focused on presenting why the Kinect makes for a better console and is worth paying the extra price for.
