That’s not true, not sure where Quikzen heard it. Netflix, Hulu and other entertainment options are also locked behind Gold while the only thing locked behind Plus is online play.

A guy with 6 posts located in Seattle spreading misinformation about the new Xbone? Hmm…

You’ve got the fever pretty bad, don’t you Canuck? All of us in Seattle must be in on some conspiracy of misinformation?

You’re right, that’s exactly what said.

You’ll pardon me for attempting to parse a meaning from your phrasing. I suppose in weighing the likelihood of possibilities, it just seemed much more plausible that he’s a shill rather than someone who misread a press release or maybe confused the policies between the platforms. I can see how that could happen.

Not that this changes anything (and I also doubt that guy is a shill, I’m sticking with either misinformed or garden variety troll) but just to avoid further confusion:

The policy is actually the same between platforms this time. Both the Xbox One and the PS4 require a paid subscription for online multiplayer, with the minor exception of Free2Play games on PS4 which may or may not require a subscription, a decision Sony leaves to the game’s publisher. This represents a a change on the PS side since PS3 did not require a paid subscription for multi.

MMOs also will not require PS+ on the PS4.

Gating multiplayer behind a paywall was a terrible decision by Sony, but it was just too much money to leave on the table.

I have mixed feelings on gating multiplayer because objectively it is clearly more consumer hostile than the old policy and yet as someone who bought a PS3 and Vita this year and has gotten untold amounts of value out of a PS+ subscription to go with them, there’s essentially no way I wasn’t going to keep my PS+ subscription going anyway.

So for me personally, the concern about extra cost is only theoretical. PS+ still represents a huge value to me due to the free games. Microsoft’s release of Halo 3 and AC2 was clearly a way to try to bridge that gap, but giving away 2 ancient games (that were already bought by essentially anyone with a passing interest in them already) is pretty far off the mark of what you get with PS+. Of course I’m sort of just assuming the quality of PS+ free game releases stays high, which remains to be seen.

I suspect that PS+ will become much less of a value eventually.

The gated mp was the determining factor in me being done with consoles- I just feel it’s a ripoff.

I can’t wait until Steam comes up with a Steam Premium subscription someday that gates off MP. The joke will be on everyone then.

Except that STEAM doesn’t have anything to do with the MP of the games as its just a patch/launcher program.

I’m with CCZ in that I find Sony’s charging for multiplayer just as upsetting as Microsoft’s charging for multiplayer except that I’m only theoretically upset with Sony as I don’t pay $50 for multiplayer, I pay $50 for $300 worth of games and get multiplayer as an added bonus.

Dead Rising 3 gets reviewed and get some serious love:

Sleeper hit? It seems DR and Forza are the two games getting tons of hype so I don’t know how that makes it a sleeper. And it seems reviews for it are all over the place, some love it, some don’t, some find it in the average 8 range.

Zoo Tycoon too

Zoo Tycoon does seem to warrant the sleeper hit label more. I wouldn’t even have heard of that game besides seeing the name on the launch list until jpinard started the Zoo Tycoon thread here on Qt3. But Polygon’s gushing review of it is making me think it will make an excellent Christmas present for my nephew. Something we can play together.

Assuming that it is the same as the PS4 version, Madden 25 comes with all of the existing modes that were in the 360/PS3 version. It has some better textures, though player models appear to be the same. The field textures are much better. Most importantly, the offensive line blocking is substantially different. Pass blocking is far more realistic, with linemen actually creating a pocket for the quarterback. I’ve noticed stronger run blocking as well. I’ve been quite pleased with the PS4 version.

Netflix and the like is still free on the PS4 though, correct?

Yes, it is.

It seems my hunch was wrong. From what people are saying, FIFA is genuinely better on next gen, especially around the fluidity and transition between animations, and Madden/NBA 2K have feature parity with current gen (all the LeBron bullshit in NBA 2K aside). That’s a surprising and very pleasing change from the norm. I’m actually more interested in getting a next-gen console within the next six months now.
