Sounds like a holdover from the always-online days that they haven’t managed to patch out yet. Still, it would be problematic for people with data caps even if working as intended.

I’m not sure if a 30+ gigabyte download really qualifies as “instant”. It’s fine if you purchase physical discs, though.
Although, they do allow you to start playing with a partial download. Still not instant, but 5 minutes is OK. I’m not sure this is a real problem.
I just listened to the Giantbomcast and they talk a while about the automatic data management, is clearly a design choice by Microsoft, you can still delete any game if you want to if not when the system is low on space it will start by deleting partial data from the least played games installed, that allows you to start the game if go back to it while downloads the rest of the data. Saves go to the cloud automatically so keeps a backup of every save and setting. Seems to be missing a feature that DVRs that do automatic management have, that is to say keep game, but is possible that they may add that latter, as for a more manual approach if enough people complain they could put that in, but I think the vast majority of people are not going to bother with that because it requires that you play a lot of games to fill the hard drive and even then most people don’t go back to a game they were playing after playing 20 newer games.

So only stereo over HDMI passthrough??? WTF??? Welcome to 1890! I guess that’s one feature I won’t be trying.
No storage management???
Wow, I’m getting more and more disappointed even before my launch edition has shipped.

I’m sure they’ll fix the HDMI audio passthrough. That’s a huge problem.
The arstechnica review went into the kinect voice control a bit more. It seemed to work maybe 75% of the time. Screw that noise, 75% is worse than 0%, because it’s frustratingly close to actually being useful. What a shame.
Lame. I was considering passing the 360 through the One (all out of HDMI inputs into my receiver), but considering I still have a backlog of 360 games I’ll just ride this one out for a while. I imagine they’ll still be selling it in a year or two.

If you can wait a week, I betcha we’ll see deals just after Thanksgiving too.

I have plenty of inputs left on my receiver and don’t watch TV, but it’s still concerning. You can’t be the center of the living room without surround sound (and 3D Blu-ray support too, for that matter). Just reinforcing my decision to wait about 6 months. Neither launch has made me anywhere close to changing my mind on that.

Why won’t they allow surround sound through the XBox One? Is that a mistake?
Is there maybe an exception for the XBox 360 if you plug that into XBox One? Otherwise there’s no reason to use it. I couldn’t imagine my music/games/tv without surround sound. It would just be the XBox one being plugged into my receiver like everything else with nothing going into the Xbox One.

I am curious just how prevalent surround sound is in the average household, I suspect it isn’t a majority.
I know it would be a nightmare trying to run speaker cables through my walls, and it just isn’t worth it. I have a simple sound bar and that is it.

It supports surround sound, just not through the passthrough. And as someone that recently remodeled their living room with an added surround system (timed for these console releases), I can’t imagine playing shooters or RPGs without it now.
I’m honestly more concerned about the lack of 3D Blu-ray support, because that’s a feature that I’ll need to spend another $100 to get.

I used to have 7.1 sound, years ago. Then I moved, and dropped to 5.1. Then 3.1. Now, 2.1.
If I was doing it over now, I would get a soundbar too.

I think I read that you can enable surround pass through via a settings option (though labeled beta).

Man, that is great news about not winning cars for winning events. Going back to the caRPG roots! Yay! I won so many cars in Forza 3 and 4 for winning races, I never bought any cars myself. With such a huge and diverse array of cars already in my garage, why would I want even more?
I still loved Forza 4 because of Rivals mode. There were hundreds of hours of gameplay in that mode, so there was no need to play the campaign with its broken economy. But if Forza 5 actually makes the economics of the campaign interesting again by making money useful again? That would be so cool.

They don’t care about fidelity. Stereo is the 720p of sound. They want it ‘good enough’ to sell, not ‘awesome’ because they dont care.
I hear it’s about equal to the percentage that own 1080p TVs. ;)
No, it just means you are going to beat by guys who are willing to spend real money on credits or grind them out.

I hadn’t thought of multiplayer, since I’ve only ever played multi against fellow QT3 players in the past. And starting with Forza 4, I felt that Rivals was better than multiplayer anyway. It’s basically asynchronous multiplayer, and usually you’re forced to use the same car.
But I don’t like this idea of describing unlocking cars through normal play (by winning races and earning credits) as grinding. That’s what the game is about. That’s like saying in Doom you could grind to get all your ammo or you could type idkfa and get it all instantly.
But I guess it does make sense to call it a grind if the only thing you play Forza for is multiplayer. In that case I guess having to play single player could understandably be described by someone as grinding, since you’re being forced to play single player just for the sake of unlocking cars for multi. Though that was still the case for when you won cars for winning races and events.
Having to spend 9 hours in a single player game to unlock 1(ONE(ONE!!!)) car is most certainly grinding and designed that way to get you to spend real money on unlocking it.
It isn’t fixing the in game economy, it is injecting more money into microsoft’s economy.
