So much for the preview videos microsoft did of it where it was perfect. Pretty terrible and once again the kinect becomes impossible to justify.

all the money in the world isn’t going to sell people a black box camera in this climate
Yep, the problem with voice recognition is that it only starts to being “usable” when it reaches a very high standard of quality, and not before.
If only recognizes some commands and others are ignored even if they are only little variations (“xbox off”, instead of “Xbox turn off”, or play Forza 5 instead of “Forza Motorsport 5”) or have problems with some accents, or you have to raise your voice or have to make an concious effort to vocalize properly and not very fast… then using it isn’t worth it, it’s faster and less problematic to use buttons or whatever. People don’t want to lose time guessing which command is the correct one or having to repeat it again.

Usability is part of the equation, but there’s also a coolness factor which kicks in, possibly at an earlier level. A hundred million Wiis were sold, not because there’s something close to perfection about it, but because it had a cool new thing.
Maybe an Xbone which orders pizza every time you ask it to start Forza, or where you can sing your way through Halo 5, is perceived as having this cool new thing by a significant fraction of its target market.
Maybe in one or two weeks there’ll be hundreds of Youtube videos with millions of views each of people doing cool, funny, unexpected things in their upgraded, Xboned living room, and the hype will be an unstoppable force.
And maybe not.
When I first started using the voice commands for Kinect 1.0, I found it annoying when it didn’t recognize a voice command. Now, it is so rare that it doesn’t get it right that I honestly can’t think of when last it didn’t work. It could be I just have dulcet vocal chords or it could be that like anything, I learned how best to speak for it to work (had the same experience with Google’s voice stuff).

From what I’ve heard it’s not terrible, it’s around 85-90% accurate, but that’s actually worse than 60% accurate because you expect it to work and it’s incredibly frustrating when it doesn’t. It sounds like it could improve, though.
It’s here!
First impressions when unpacking the box is that the XBox ONE is solid. And big. And monolithic. And very black. I remember buckling under the heft of my original XBox many years ago. And this one is very reminiscent of that. Nothing like the comparatively dainty 360 or the puny PS4. :)
The Day One update downloaded in a couple of minutes and was installed in a bit over 5 minutes. Painless and quick.
The Kinect field of view is a lot wider, recognises me quicker than the old one and is much improved when it comes to understanding vocal commands. I’ve been taking shortcuts around the UI doing things much faster than I could with the controller (finding a specific game, going to some settings and, my favourite, saying “XBox use a code” to have Kinect instantly scan and apply my Forza 5 download QR code). Oh, and for those doubting voice recognition, I speak English with a pronounced French accent and Kinect is happy to recognise my commands.
Overall, it all feels very slick. Switching between apps is surprisingly quick.

Theres a alternate universe where the Xbox One is like this…
big images, nonsensical post
On other alternate universe, the Xbox One is like this:

On the universe that is more like our universe (the U-prima), the Xbox One is like this:

Has anyone compared the bluray capabilities of the next gen systems. PS3 was probably the 2nd maybe 3rd best bluray player out there for long time. I’m curious to know how the new one’s compare for the videophile.

If anyone was looking for an Xbox One, but didn’t reserve one, I saw many systems available for walk in purchase at Target and Walmart this morning.

Fing DERP Microsoft. If you start the system for the first time with the charge and play connected it confuses the hell out of it and won’t progress. Had to reboot, unplug and restart.

PS4 Blueray analisys, conclusion for now the PS3 is still better then the PS4, but imagine that could change in the future, let’s see if they do a X1 analysis.
Hopefully, they test one that doesn’t grind the disc first.
Even though I have a very high failure rate on using Google voice search on the Iphone I’m still believe in the voice recognition future and that the awkwardness of talking to a machine will eventually fade away. The 3 major tech companies all of then are doing work in that direction, and I don’t think keeping the product in the lab until it’s perfect is the best approach of evolving the technology. So I’m glad MS is betting so much in having voice being the preferred way of using the X1 interface, sure it has lot’s problems but I think the hardware in place is good enough is now a question of improving software and even some people will get frustrated and stop using it a bet lot’s of people will keep using it and help improve the system.
Those machines must be destroyed they are becoming sentient and share there creators hate for physical media, discs are evil must be destroyed.
Got mine.
Very. VERY buggy for those of us that are invested in the Microsoft ecosystem. Avatar program crashes. Skydrive seems dead. Skype wouldn’t recognize my account (which is already linked with my Windows Live account). YouTube UI is same as Wii U.
The voice recognition is…ok. It’s good enough for basic use (i.e. XBOX, Go to Netflix). The games suffer aliasing (one thing I like about the Wii U is that their graphics may be simpler but they are very anti-aliased).
I was not able to distinguish a graphics difference between the PS4 and the XBOX One for what it’s worth but I’m not terribly discriminating.
The overall user experience is pretty decent but not as good as I thought it was going to be (The Kinnect, so far, was not worth the cost).

Not able to find an Xbox One in the Houston area. But noticed that Walmart is selling the games for $49, which will apparently be the price through Black Friday. Not a bad deal.
Strange. I had no issue at all with the Avatar program or accessing my Skydrive. Haven’t seen any reported on another forum where quite a few new XBox One players have been posting their impressions today either. I haven’t tried linking my Skype account yet though.
In other news, the Kinect Rivals demo was fun. Had a race against my daughter who found it hilarious. I like the way you simply need to close your right hand to accelerate.
The wider Kinect angle of view for 2 players in a small room also makes a big difference. We can now pretty much stand anywhere we want in the living room, instead of stuck against the sofa to be far enough.

The $11 you save per game will give you some starting cash to buy some of the microtransaction DLC!
