Still don’t get that… belief.
I’d rather have my game install while i’m making dinner than sit through extra long load times all of the time. I’m actually annoyed at the developer’s laziness when there is no install.
All the PS4 disc games I put in were ready to play nearly immediately. They do load a bit slower for the first level or two because they are installing as I play, but even the worst disc-based one I saw was about a minute and a half until I could start playing, not 30 minutes. I’ve played with the Xbox One but haven’t seen an actual install, but based on reports of install times I’m seeing on the Internet, the Xbox One’s time to play for a new game is significantly longer than on the PS4 on average, potentially orders of magnitude longer if the game has a big update to download because the One seems to conflate those two things (the initial install and the update) and doesn’t let you play the pre-updated version even for single player. Again, this is second hand information so someone with actual hands-on in installing Xbox One games can say for sure, but I’ve heard lots of reports of games with updates being an hour into the install process and only at 40% ready and I’ve seen nothing like that on the PS4, not even close.
On the PS4 I was playing COD: Ghosts in less than 30 minutes and that was a digital download and I’m including the initial download (it becomes ready to play before the entire package is downloaded). For disc based games, I’m generally up and running with a new game much faster on the PS4 than I was on the 360 or the PS3, let alone what I’m hearing on the One. Forced 30+ minute installs for a single player disc-based game seems pretty insane to me.

Took 2-3 minutes each to play NFS: Rivals and Skylander disc based games on PS4.

I actually kept trying to figure out if games were installing or not on the PS4. As far I can discern it’s all automatic. Only game where I knew it was installing was Battlefield 4 since it gave me the option to play campaign while I waited. Instead I just went to get something to drink and grab a snack and 5-10 minutes later it was done.
I’ll be writing more about this on the front page but installs take significantly longer on the xbox one compared to the PS4. Downloading full games from the store also takes longer.
Quick question: Is there a reliable way to get my captured video clips to get uploaded to SkyDrive? Must I absolutely edit them to have them uploaded? Or is it supposed to be automatic? I don’t see any menu option to simply store them to the cloud.
So far, none of my video captures seem to have made it.

What crazy load times are you getting on your 360? GTAV may be the biggest offender but it’s only when the game first starts up and your comment is kind of proving my point which is installs are fine when they are convenient.

Downloads are a lot slower on Xbox one compared to ps4. On the ps4 overnight I had ghosts, bf4,Resogun, Killzone, contrast, dc online, blacklight, warframe, and a bunch of apps all done by morning. In contrast I really couldn’t play anything the first night things were downloading so slowly. I got enough of crimson dragon to try out the first level and then it was too late and I was too tired and went to bed. By morning ryse was done but Fortza was only half done and dead rising was still in the queue. Hopefully when I get home tonight everything will be downloaded. What happened to those 300,000 servers they bragged about?
For the hour I played ryse I really like it. I liked it quite a bit more than I expected looking at the reviews. I like the timing and counters and chaining. The graphics are great. It kind of feels a little like assassins creed combat wise. The clip saving and uploading to sky drive worked ok but WTF no background uploading like ps4. Just sit there and watch an upload bar. I then used the sky drive app and watched it on my iphone. Clip is limited to 5 min compared to 15 min on ps4. 1:48 clip was around 55 mb.
Those are busy crunching data for Forza’s Drivatars.

I got AC4, Dead Rising 3 and Ryse. I like AC4 the best, Ryse the least…but I don’t have much time into any of them yet. I am the kind of player who installs everything if possible…these installs took a crazy amount of time. 20-25 minutes each.
I am control freak and I do not like how the storage management is completely off-limits to the user. I could find no way to even see how much storage I was using let alone how to delete things I didnt want. Also despite 3 USB ports, USB drives appear to not work at all. What are those ports for? Charging a controller?
Aside from having to retry or resubmit things multiple times, which I will attribute to network issues, I have had one bug. I got a weird error code when trying to play any game. It told me to go to xbom.com/something and enter the code but the code was, helpfully, not found. Restarting did not help. I thought I had a bricked console. I had to disconnect the power cord to get it to do a cold boot and that resolved my issue. And on that note, I do not see a way to tell the console to power off completely when you shut it down. It seems like it just goes into the sleep mode or whatever it is. Also, one time when powering up the game did not recognize the disc in the drive. I had to eject it and re-insert it. Yay DRM.
I didnt mess with the cable box pass through thing, I dont see any advantage there for me. I did install some video apps. WatchESPN is cool but the resolution is worse than it is through my cable box so…yeah. The NFL app is promising, except they do not partner with my provider, Time Warner, so I just get the generic content. No Fantasy or NFL Network integration. I installed Amazon Video but didn’t mess with it. Surprised to not see HBO GO, I thought that was an XBONE exclusive?
What else…Oh, I don’t like the Kinect in general but I will say that being able to say ‘Xbox, Use Code’ and hold up the card instead of typing in those 25 character long codes using a controller was awesome. Having to use a gamepad to approximate a keyboard is something the console guys need to work harder on improving. I like the controller, but I don’t think its worlds better than the 360. For me the only thing I noticed immediately is that its lighter and the D-Pad is more responsive/intuitive.
Apologies for linking GAF, but this post summarizes a lot about the Forza 5 monetisation strategy, and boy does it set a bad precedent for this generation, in a launch title no less.
Forza 5: The monetization is even worse than you think.
Token cost of all cars in the game comes to 168993
if bought at simplest token value cost of 8000 per $100 usd, that comes to $2200. you could probably bring it in a bit cheaper by buying the remaining balance with smaller amounts instead of the 8000 lot.
if bought at the least value cost of 1250 per $20 that comes to $2700.
cheapest overally brings it to $1690 with 100 tokens per dollar…
You can always use a USB keyboard to do this instead (and you could do this on the Xbox 360/PS3/PS4 too). Also the PS4 supports keyboard input via the Playstation app for iOS/Android and I assume Xbox One SmartGlass has something similar but I’ve never used SmartGlass. Having said that, yeah optical scanning directly is even better than keyboard typing.
Good thing with closed platforms so there are no game-trainers I suppose. That sounds crazy for a “purchased console game” as opposed to a F2P title, or is Forza 5 a free download on PRISM ONE?
So far, not impressed.
The thing that is bugging me most is that there’s only stereo and DTS through the SPDIF out. If I use my receiver, it’s fine, but I prefer my Turtle Beach headset, and that’s limited to stereo.
I only played Forza and I’m not crazy about it. The lack of a reasonably priced steering wheel at launch kind of sucks. It doesn’t appear that there’s a Forza 5 thread, so maybe I will start one for my Forza 5 specific complaints.
I fail to see the use of Kinect. The headturning function in FOrza doesn’t work; I found myelf constantly looking out of my left window and had to turn it off. It’s still easier to use the controller than voice commands, and I find myself yellling at the XBox to get it to work. My wife has informed me that she is not interested in hearing me do that. The only nice thing about the Kinect is being able to hold the card up to the camera instead of entering a 25 character code. THat’s not worth $100.
Here are my Day One Impressions - Good, Bad and Puzzling (my impressions for the PS4 are below for reference).
- Controller feels great. The little rumbles in the trigger are noticeable in a great way in games, especially Forza
- Hardware setup was a snap, granted I have DirecTV and hence my cable box has an HDMI out option, so easy as pie (still it needed to find my Onkyo receiver and did)
- This feels like a next gen operating system. Microsoft delivered on how fluidly you can switch from one task to another
- And it sounds next gen… in that I can’t hear this thing at all. My cable box is louder than the Xbox One
- Games: Dead Rising 3 is a great showpiece, as is Forza
- Vudu, Netflix, Amazon Prime all up and going without a hitch
- Kinect - much more responsive when it comes to gestures and voice but… (see below)
- Auto sign in is great and easy; my wife has an Xbox Live account and it instantly recognizes when we’re both there
- Lastly, it reminds me of my smartphone - a lot. It multitasks like a smartphone and like a smartphone, it does a number things but in one single form factor.
- Surprised by the lack of information included with the Xbox One. I expected a users manual or card explaining the gestures. Nope.
- It’s seemingly always downloading something… but I’m not sure what. Whenever I download a game, the Xbox One will put it in a queue, though I’m unsure what it’s downloading ahead of time
- Like the PS4, talk of “you can download games and play within minutes” was an exaggeration. I suppose if I had the fastest Internet download speeds possible this would be true, but on Comcast Blast (one bump up from standard, I think), it takes awhile to download and get to play ready status
- Xbox encourages you to plug directly into your TV rather than go through a receiver. Doing that lets you turn on the whole system (TV and console) with just your voice, which is cool. But for those of us with surround sound setups, you can’t (I think) say “Xbox On” and have it turn on your console, receiver and TV… so you’re still going to need that remote handy. And that just irks the part of my brain that wanted the ability to walk in and say Xbox On - and have everything light up.
- Speaking of saying things… it’s hit and miss so far on TV commands specifically (update: just saw that on TV, you’re supposed to say “watch” instead of “go to”)
? So… anyone else miss the active downloads page?
? Why can’t I see how much space I have left?
My Xbox one is plugged into my onkyo amp rather than the TV and “Xbox on” worked just fine as soon as I entered the correct models in the device setup. It switches on both automatically. You can also select which of them it switches off when you say “Xbox turn off”.
? Why can’t I see how much space I have left?
The PR answer is that you don’t need to because the one manages that smartly for you. If your HD fills up, the content you used the longest ago will get removed (but the minimum required to start playing while the rest downloads is kept). So your disk space is managed for you.
Works for me for now. But I expect a patch in the future to give us the option to check.

Thanks Wendelius. I’ll check it out and try again. I have an Onkyo myself TX SR875 I think.
Question: where can you select which devices it switches off?

I was watching a twitch stream last night for about 30 minutes. In that time the XBO paused his game twice with the “listening prompt” because it thought he was giving a voice command. Looked pretty annoying.
Under settings. I think it’s in the TV or Devices settings. I’m not home to check, unfortunately.
It has a long list of Onkyo models. Type as many letters as you can to narrow things down.
