That’s how they spun it for the media, yep. Obviously they were working on a real game for the past 2 years. They just failed to produce anything, for whatever reason.
The way it was, despite the publishing arrangement, MS was completely at Epic’s mercy over whether more games would be made at all. If Epic didn’t care to make more they were SOL, and right now they are desperate to hold on to Xbox fans when so many are switching to PS4.
Feels like Epic got the better end here. Gears has run its course, the aesthetic is just dated now and the “lore” of the universe is nonsensical and without value. Might as well squeeze some cash out of Microsoft while they are in a panic.
My concern is exactly this… I really enjoyed the Gears of War franchise, but I’m done. I don’t need more of that gameplay. They would have to really make some changes to the formula to lure me back.
I love my Xbox One, but this announcement doesn’t do much for me. I think I played a bit of GoW1 on PC but it didn’t really grab me, and I never played the rest of the series. I did claim GoW1 on Games with Gold for my 360 last month, so maybe I’ll give it another try.
Really, my only problem(s) with the One at the moment are all software related, specifically the lack of it. I am very disappointed that MS didn’t have more titles ready to go for launch - the marketplace is very sparse. Throwing money hats at some indie developers this time last year would have been a good idea. Major/boxed releases are coming very slowly too. On top of that (and this won’t be very significant for those outside the UK), the One has no BBC iPlayer, which is basically the killer online app for the UK. Very embarrasing and a PR win for Sony not to have it at launch, but Christmas came and went and it’s still not here. Ludicrous.
Also, no DLNA pull? FFS my three year old Samsung TV has that functionality built in. It’s not rocket science.
Nope, it’s not rocket science, it is greed. Why would you subscribe to MS provided online streaming services if you could just stream content you already own from another content source in your house?
In fairness PS4 launched with the same problem. Sony have announced DLNA will be patched in, but I can’t remember if MS have yet. I assume it will be coming at some point.
I loved the Gears trilogy, but Gears Judgment felt like a cover-band’s greatest hits compilation. I don’t think I need any more Gears.
Not to mention that Judgment was a massive letdown coming from he guys who made the absolutely genius Bulletstorm.
I think Sam Jones is talking about DLNA pulled from your computer instead of being pushed. It works the same way with streaming music on there too. You have to start the app on XB1, then go to your computer and put your movies or music in a WMP playlist and then use the “play to” option and select the Xbox One. It’s annoying having to push the media instead of having the PS3 or 360 type browsing where you could pull whatever you wanted without ever leaving your couch.
Summary: PS4 still has no DLNA, XB1 has had it since launch, but in a very annoying implementation. So I hope whenever PS4 adds it, it’s more like PS3.

Is it actually DLNA, or is it a proprietary MS standard? I kind of assumed it was the latter, because Play To only works in Windows 7 and 8.
I hope they make it happen: Microsoft: Something like 1 vs. 100 coming to Xbox One
1 vs 100 is one of my most fondly remembered experiences on the 360. It was fun family time, something unlike any other online game and you really felt part of a crowd.

Why was cancelled before? many people seems to like it.
I don’t think that it was ever officially confirmed. Lack of ad revenue to fund the show or license costs were reasons going around at the time.
But it was a really entertaining experience. So I’d be very happy if MS can use the lessons learned then and bring back a similar show/game.

That’s the best gaming news I’ve heard in a while!
Cool! Not good enough to buy an XBox One, but glad to see it coming back.
You guys do realise it’s going to be crammed full of microtransactions if it does come back, right?
Wouldn’t it more likely generate revenue via in game ads?
Oh, who am I kidding. It will have both.
Been to the mall again I found tons of unsold Xbox Ones shortly before Christmas and lo and behold:
Still tons of unsold Xbones (I guess around 60) and NO PS4.
Sorry for the bad quality but I had to take those pics quickly as they don’t like to have pictures taken for obvious reasons.
Location: Saturn, Riem Arcaden, Munich, Germany
Same here in Passau. Undiminished piles of Xbones, no PS4 anywhere.

Wow, unless the dollar is weaker than I thought ten euros is really cheap. You should buy them all.

Looks like the sign says 529 euros, hard to tell because of the glare/reflection. The ten euro is for whatever is in that bin.
I thought the FIFA bundle was suppose to be a LTO or was I mistaken. Maybe they just have a crapton of them. Wait, some have pictures of FIFA and some don’t so they must’ve not sold through them all. And is it really 529 euros, that seems awfully expensive when converting to dollars. I know shit costs more in Europe but that’s a bit high.
