This has probably been asked already in this thread, but I am too lazy (and bad at search) to go looking through 195 pages of responses to try and find the answer…
So I have bought an Xbox One for a Christmas gift for my son (and myself). He has recently purchased new retail copies (pre-ordered even) of Destiny, it’s recent $35 DLC and Call of Duty Advanced Warfare, so we’ve got over $150 tied up in retail box games for the Xbox 360.
Does any of that transfer over to the Xbox One via Xbox Live? If we own Destiny and CoD:AW, can we get free or cheap digital copies when we move to the new system, or are we stuck playing those and everything else we own for 360 on the 360 forever unless we want to pay $60 again for XBone copies?
Destiny for the 360 includes a free upgrade to the XBox One version. Call of Duty has the same deal, but only for the digital download version.
Good news on the Destiny front then I suppose. Do you know how it works? When he connects to his live account with the XBOne will it already show that he has a download available for Destiny or do we have to request it somehow?
I guess I’m not surprised about Call of Duty or other titles not having the option to carry over. If they did offer a digital token for owners of the 360 retail box, there would be nothing to stop those people from selling their retail box back to Gamestop or something and essentially having a “free” copy of CoD or whatever. Still, it sucks that we’ve spent a lot of money in the past few months on games for the 360 that also exist on the XBone and all we’ll have to show for it is Destiny. At least we’re not getting rid of the 360, and as I understand it you can connect the 360 to the XBOne via the HDMI IN and be connected to Live on both systems allowing you to play all your games with the same account.
Woops. I looked into “how do you upgrade Destiny,” and it turns out that’s digital-only as well. If you bought the physical game, your only real option is to sell it and buy a new physical copy for the One.
Spend $350 on a console, go rebuy all your recent $60 games. Thanks Micro$oft.
I’m thinking the only game we’re going to repurchase then is Destiny, and only because he’ll want to continue playing it when new content comes out in the years ahead. It’s nice how people who buy digital copies of stuff get rewarded, while people who bought retail copies via pre-order get screwed.
To be fair, it’s not like you’d have a better outcome going from PS3 to PS4.

Thanks for nothing, $ony.

His characters should be there on ONe from 360 though, and you should NOT have to buy the expansion twice.
I got desinty (for ps4) from ebay for like $30, so try hunting for a download code there.
At least you can keep your Destiny character.
Pretty sure its the publisher who decides if a game can get upgraded not MS or Sony.
Honestly, I can’t see how they’d make this work with physical disks. In theory, it’d be a perfect way to pirate the game. Buy a retail 360 copy on eBay, upgrade to the XBox One version, and then re-sell the discs. Free game. Since you can’t pass around the digital game, and it’s tied to your account, they can give you a free upgrade without worrying about this.
Is there an advantage to doing it this way?
My son just got an XBOne not long ago and he tore down the 360. This weekend, missing his vast library of 360 games, he hooked up his 360 (using component) and put it right next to the XBOne. He just switches the TV mode to play all his games. I’m sorry if I’m missing something obvious, but I wanted to ask because my son may not know about using the HDMI in, but I don’t want to suggest it, if there isn’t an obvious up side for him.

The HDMI passthrough adds latency, so it’s fine for tv, but not ideal for games.
The HDMI passthrough is terrible for playing any games that require immediate feedback. So forget about playing something like Geometry Wars 2 that way. It just isn’t practical. But the latency is okay in other types of games, most of the time, like The Walking Dead. But I still wouldn’t recommend it.

I do recommend using the passthrough for TV though since it’s awesome. In fact, I wish there were two passthroughs so I could hook up my Apple TV through it as well.
I know, and I understand. As you say, too many people would abuse the system and purchase 360 copies of games that exist on both systems just to get the digital upgrade token and then resell the 360 disc to offset the cost. I’m just bitter because we have spent close to $200 in recent months on new retail 360 games, including pre-orders, and it kind of feels like a kick in the teeth to be told we’ll need to buy our games all over again if we want to play them on Xbox One. If I had known this we would have bought digital copies of the last 3 or 4 games we purchased. Turns out someone already picked up Destiny for Xbox One for cheap in a recent sale to give to my son as a Christmas gift (they didn’t know he already had it), so that should work out as his character and the digital content he has purchased WILL transfer to the Xbone copy. For the other games, we’ll just stick to the 360 version.
Thanks for the heads up on the HDMI pass through guys. I did not realize there were lag issues. I had read that you could connect the two consoles that way and be logged into your Live account on both, but it’s not worth it if there are latency issues, as we’ll be playing games like CoD:AW most of the time that would suffer from that. The TV we use for gaming has multiple available HDMI inputs, so we’ll just connect one console to each and switch when we need to.
The Twitch update coming our way sounds great: http://www.polygon.com/2014/12/9/7359863/xbox-ones-twitch-gets-video-on-demand-advanced-search-and-home-screen
The new advanced broadcasting filtering runs off of Xbox Live’s ability to “associate real-time gameplay stats with broadcasts,” according to the post announcing the news on Major Nelson’s website. Depending on the game, those pre-set filters might include things like player stats, game modes, maps, player skill level, in-game activity and progress. Some games will even feature the ability to add more than one filter to a search.
For instance, users can now search for streamers featuring the highest kill to death ratio in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, or search for specific car classes in Forza Horizon 2.
The update also brings with it the ability to view highlights and past Twitch broadcasts from broadcasters who are even offline, a console first, and to manually select the quality of the video you’re watching.
Xbox One owners will also now be able to follow games or channels on Twitch, as well as searching by game or by person, and have feeds appear on their home screen.
The added search capabilities will be useful for popular games.

The Twitch app on the XOne is what got me into Twitch, it’s nice to see it’s finally getting some updates. The ability to watch past broadcasts and highlights is great, I’m surprised they didn’t include it in the beginning.
