Yeah, I don’t think they’re aiming for the average gamer here. More precision! More buttons! More bling! Customizable! It’s the kind of pro-gamer (or wannabe-pro-gamer) that also shells out far, far more money for a mouse or a keyboard than I ever would.

I got in this morning. Had a message waiting for me from Xbox Live to download the preview software. After that I opted into the preview program from in there but hadn’t heard if I was accepted yet (it said “pending”). I’ll invite you when I get home from work tonight if I don’t get distracted by Witcher 3.
I would really appreciate a preview invite as well, if someone still has one.
I invited Kadath, Brakara and divedivedive since they were already on my friends list. I’ll have to add you to my friends list first.
EDIT: ARogan and Mr Stone invited as well.
I didn’t see any mention in the terms of agreement about keeping stuff secret, so here’s my first impression of the Backwards Compatibility.
It’s mixed. First I tried Geometry Wars. Excellent framerate, music, controls. It’s just like playing it on the 360, even when the screen got really busy with hundreds of those little buzzy enemies. I doubt I’ll beat my high score, but it sure is fun to try again.
Next up, I tried N+. Unfortunately, this one is not as smooth. There’s definitely a frame rate hit, which also affects the controls because N+ is soooo dependent on precision. In Geometry Wars I had my leaderboard ready to go, and in N+, I had the correct levels unlocked matching my progress to Episode 39. But hopefully they can fix that framerate issue on N+.
Next I’m going to try my second favorite launch game (after Geometry Wars): Kameo! I put the disc in, and it “requires an update”, which basically meant downloading or copying from disc the whole game, which is taking forever.
I’m sure they’ll improve it. The important part is that it’s done in software, so future consoles (which will continue using PC-standard hardware) will be even better.
Does that mean I can access the 360 library on PC?

I tried Geometry Wars, and I couldn’t tell any difference from the original.
Yeah, it’s pretty spot on, isn’t it? Silky smooth. Plus I can still use Xbox One features like snapping TV to one side while playing. It’s pretty glorious.
I did go back and try some more levels in N+. It looks like the level I was stuck on (Episode 39) was a troublesome one. I tried some other levels and they play just fine on the Xbox One. But Episode 39 has two rocket launchers, and when they see me, they launch their guided rockets, and I get the frame-rate slow down.
Yeah, for disc based games they are just using the disc to verify that you own it.
Thanks, but how does this work? I haven’t received anything.
I invited a bunch of people as well. It’s not immediate, once you’re invited you need to wait for MS to select you.
Yeah, what Sam said. When I choose the invites, it says something about them being submitted, pending approval or something of that sort.
Btw, Kameo took several hours to download 6.6Gb. It’s like it was on slower servers than the ones that store Xbox One games.
Ah, I see. I guess it could take awhile since I bet a lot of people wants to get into the preview program now because of the BC feature. Then again, Sony said nobody cares about BC so maybe not.
If you’re going to spend that much on a controller primarily for cod, it seems dumb that you wouldn’t just get the thing that lets you use mouse and keyboard instead.
Modern CoD is one of the few games in which mouse & keyboard really doesn’t help all that much. Turn speed, the sprint mechanic, scoping, and special abilities are all tuned for controller use.
Various youtube videos with the XIM4 seem to disagree. Those guys have a clear (and very unfair) advantage.
Sure, but those guys aren’t playing the way most people play CoD. On the couch, crouched over with elbows on knees and the controller held up. XIM4 also isn’t allowed in many of the pro tournaments.
Err, yeah. It’s obviously cheating.
And yes, obviously you need a table to hold the keyboard+mouse.
