This was one of his whiniest and most off-base reviews in a while.
Are you saying that because you like the game and disagree, or because his arguments actually are without merit? Because it sounded like stock Yahtzee to me, and the criticisms (repetition of moves, arbitrary point awards, shitty wii controls) are all things that tested my patience until I gave up on the game.
Yeah, as much as I enjoyed MadWorld, I can’t really disagree with his assessment of the game. His deflating balloon metaphor was spot on.
He’s starting from a whine about how he doesn’t like the Wii, so the fact he doesn’t like Madworld isn’t terribly goddamn surprising. I’d be more impressed with his argument if he doesn’t start with the assumption/point that the platform is without merit.
I’ll agree with him that dragging guys around looking for a rosebush is pretty dumb, but the game is otherwise pretty fun. I’d probably think it had more of a problem with being shallow if it was longer or didn’t change things up with the weapons and minigames.

Actually, he doesn’t like the Wiimote controls, this uses the Wiimote controls and thus he doesn’t like the controls. Because he doesn’t like Wiimote controls.

Tom Clancy’s HAWX.
“Press X to make the world safe for Democracy.”
I thought the core gameplay itself was shallow, and primarily because the Wii controls made everything a sloppy mess that would have probably been fine with a traditional controller. While I don’t hate all Wii games, I prefer the ones that make a minimalist (Resident Evil 4, Mario) or at least intelligently distributed use of the controls’ unique qualities (Metroid 3). The ones that have banked on substituting flailing at a high level of precision for basic controls (Samba de Amigo, da Blob) or, god forbid, metahumor (No More Heroes) have failed me every time once the initial novelty wore off.
It’s a good thing it does light gun games reasonably well, but once again the biggest threat to those is the Umbrella Chronicles style of merging what I just complained about even more directly with traditional QTEs.
In a rare occurrence of actual Zero Punctuation relevance, that’s the game my friends and I are playing through now. I’m surprised he didn’t harp on the fact that the difficulty settings are at best a little screwy and at worst criminally insane or the fact that I can’t figure out how to make a new callsign type pilot person for online to operate as an alternative to my offline persona or how they don’t give you so much as a quick button to get your friends list to invite people into your group from the lobby when you’ve CLEARLY created a multiplayer lobby.
Surprisingly, I’m still enjoying it.
Regardless, I can’t get this out of my head every time I think of it:
“Play Tom Clancy’s HAW - It’s like driving a tractor, but in the air, and if you didn’t know what a tractor was!”
I’m glad all the spoilers at the end were from movies I’ve already seen. Only because I got the joke, of course. Because if I hadn’t seen one, I’d have no idea which movie it was, so it wouldn’t really be a real spoiler anyway.
So you didn’t “stick your head in a bucket until the generic metal starts up”?

He ragged on the story and I felt warm and cuddly.

Siren Blood Curse. yahtzee gets to “enjoy” his favorite genre again.
I’d say he sums up Siren nicely.
Which is awesome. In a strange sort of way, ZP makes me wish I would want to spring for the $$$ to get a PS3 (or a bit of $$ to get a 360), just so I could see the games he plays.

Assault on Dark Athena is available for the PC.
Am I the only one who’s gotten a bit bored with Yahtzee? When I first saw it (MGS4) I thought he was hilarious, but now I just find the whole thing kinda repetative.
Am I the only one who’s gotten a bit bored with Yahtzee?
No, dissing Yahtzee is all the rage these days. He’s the new Matrix.
In fact, I’d say you’re a bit late to that party Blue. Probably because you only started watching from MGS4, instead of from the beginning. People getting tired of Yahtzee seems to come in waves.
Although I will admit, I do feel an inkling of that myself sometimes. I find that it helps a lot if you’ve played the game in question to completion. When you know what he’s talking about, then it doesn’t seem as generic and formulaic. If you’re just watching the review of a game you haven’t played yourself, it can all start to seem like the same jokes cycled over and over, read in a fast manner.

I thought this this week’s review was a little weak compared to the last couple, but oh well. They can’t all be gems.
