First “review” of Overlord 2 that makes me want to play it. Even though I have the first Overlord game, still in its wrapping plastic, on the shelf… taunting me.
You could probably get away with just playing the original if you’ve no unusual craving for the new one. If you do, though, it’s a decent follow-up.
I actually tried to play the first one again (third try) in preparation for the new one and only got a few levels in. The level design is just too damned confusing, you constantly hit dead ends that require new minion types or items to get beyond with no hint as to where you would find them (often you end up having to go back to older levels), and overall I just felt more confused than evil.
Yeah, that’s really obnoxious. And the levels are confusing enough that it’s never clear whether you’ve hit a dead end or just can’t find the proper path. I spent a really long time wandering around that forest trying to get to Oberon before I realized I’d done all I could do in that quest path and just needed to go try something else somewhere else for a while. It sounds like the second game is supposed to be more linear, though, which may alleviate this problem. I know people have lamented the loss of “freedom” in the sequel but if it solves some of the design issues in the first game that sounds good to me. The core of the game is puzzle solving and sending your horde to maul things. I don’t need an open world quest hub setup for that to be fun.
