How the fuck can you review Red Faction, and not mention the nano rifle? The game doesn’t really start until you get the nano rifle IMHO.

I agree with most of his criticisms, but I think I liked the game more than he did. I’d be interested to know whether or not he played on casual.

Yeah, he seemed really off-base in his review. He spent most of the time nit-picking a lot of things. It was obvious he was expecting a saints row 2 in space. And of course, he didn’t mention the multiplayer.

But his reviews aren’t to be taken seriously, he does it for the lulz.

QFE, over.

0:18 - woah! If I wore my JR hat it’d have been blown off!
GJ man.

Thanks! I’m glad to have the full version of the theme out in the wild. I’ve always liked that chorus/solo section.

As someone who has found it impossible to get into RF:G (and I’ve tried multiple times), I agree with most of his observations. It really does have a rocky start. I finally finished the first area and just don’t see much incentive to continue. If so many people hadn’t been gushing over it so much I wouldn’t even have played it that long.

So what is this nano rifle you speak of?

Honestly, I didn’t have any fun until I got the MacGuffin rifle. There’s a mission to retrieve a “nano forge” or some such nonsense, because it will turn the tide of everything blah blah blah. Turns out it makes the game fun!

The nanorifle really does make it the game exponentially fun. It allows me to snipe from hilltops and practically dismantle EDF bases without them catching me.

Ah, so the nano rifle is the key to enjoying RF:G? Like Matt, I made a bunch of attempts at getting into it, but after my initial go never lasted more than 15 minutes or so before turning it off.

I had tons of fun smashing things in my initial play-through, even before getting the nano-rifle.

But, having read a bunch of people complaining, I just seem to be unusually good at this game. Qt3ers can attest to this (that have faced my hammer online) I guess this is just one of those games that comes naturally to me. (I am usually pretty bad at games in general). I think in the total campaign I have died 4 times.

If the hammer or explosive charges or driving cars through buildings doesn’t excite you, I’d be surprised if the nano rifle suddenly made the game work for you. There probably is no trick to liking the game (although a lot of people say playing on casual is just such a trick), I’ve heard that some times decent people dislike good games.

My trick was turning the difficulty to casual. When clown cars of EDF offer new opportunity for mayhem rather than very quick death, basically.

I like driving cars through buildings, I just dislike the clunky cover system, absurdly limited ammo, and rapid deaths that tend to result from doing so. Yahtzee’s comment about being let loose then abruptly pulled back by the leash is very accurate. I constantly feel like I’m being punished for exploring or experimenting.

I like the nanorifle and all, but the mech unit you climb into is what made it for me. It’s destruction on a level I can really get behind. Never has a game made me feel more like a god of destruction than when I first climbed into one. I still start giggling foolishly every time I find one.

This sounds like a casual difficulty problem too. I never felt yoinked-back on that. Perhaps the easier difficulty makes up for the so-so difficulty curve and clunky combat controls?

Then crying because they never respawn.

Ever played Syndicate Wars?
Or Infantry (Online)?

No, thank you for making it.
Though here comes the fatal blow: make it longer!!!

Not to be that guy, but I’d venture you’re “doing it wrong”. I’m maybe 60-70% of the way through the game, and I don’t even know how to activate the cover system. I forgot it before the tutorial that explained it was over. The guns are just a distraction from the real game, which is hitting everything with a hammer, or setting up daisy chains of explosions with demo charges. So, you shouldn’t be running out of ammo, because you should never use it. The standard guns in this game are a weapon of last resort, not a highlight. (Arc Welder, nano rifle, etc. excepted).

Demo charges are limited.

There are so many weapon drop caches in the game that I never found myself running out of ammo.
