Not at all, a combination of music, voice, dialog, art all combine to bring the setting to life. The idea of perspective affecting the atmosphere just seems… odd.

I would not consider any of those “excellent games.” BG&E has a great visual style and world, Planescape has a great story and fantastic writing, and I thought Bloodlines was pretty bad all around. If a game isn’t fun to play, it’s not an excellent game. That doesn’t mean it can’t have excellent components, but gameplay is paramount.

Aaaaaaannnd you 've lost me.

Not to me it isn’t, gaming is an entertainment medium, I judge the success of a game by its entertainment value.

I judge the success of a game by whether it’s a good game or not. Beyond Good & Evil is a wonderful game with a fascinating world for the most part, but the stealth sections royally blow and as such it is not an excellent game. And since the key part of the phrase “interactive entertainment” is “interactive,” if the interaction is subpar, the game is not as good as it could be and is thus not excellent.

Gameplay is the most important element of a game. There are those who disagree with me on this…and they’re wrong. I understand what you’re saying, but it’s not a very useful way of evaluating interactive entertainment.

Of course it is. Did you have enjoy it? What else matters?

Splosion Man and Trine, in the 2.5D Hoedown.

As a very pedantic correction, you can actually have fractional-dimensions objects. Theyr’e perhaps better known as fractals. (Just don’t ask me to explain why this is the case - it’s coming up to a decade since I took the relevant paper at college…)

Indeed.

The RPG aspects of Vampire Bloodlines are “gameplay.” Yes the main levels didn’t have particularly good map design, but everything else (Boss-fights, RPG balance, character development) was well done. Talking to people was just as much a part of the gameplay as exploring a haunted house. It was an action RPG, not a shooter.

You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.

Lost Vikings, what a wonderful game that was.

I’m glad you’ve settled that. Can you define game, please?

Nice tautology BTW.

Is the game loved by Matt because it is successful? Or is it a successful game because it is loved by Matt(Ευθύφρων 10a)?

Why is that a tautology? People do judge the success of a game by other standards. Sales, metacritic, innovation, etc…

Way to do the whole internet nerd “nitpick the words and intentionally (?) ignore/misunderstand the actual meaning” thing. I thought it would be pretty obvious that, given the subject matter of the conversation, I was referring to the part of the entertainment item that you actually interact with and play. You know, the part that makes it a game and not a movie or a book.

I should know by now not to assume Qt3 is sharp enough to pick up on such things these days. Wasn’t always that way, but the times they are a-changin’.

Sorry, I was under the impression that you were saying that a good game can only be a good game if it satisfies your subjective opinion. I apologize for the misunderstanding.

Well played with the n))b dig though, well played.

Tales of Money Island this week, though now I want to play Nancy Drew Meets Mechagodzilla.

DON’T STOP

Is that a typo or intentional? I hope it’s intentional, because I like it.

Intentional actually :)

Poetry!

That is excellent. Most of the rhymes didn’t even seem contrived. Very nicely done.
