Eh, I like cover systems, and don’t care for the old frantic run-in-circles gameplay that was the norm for shooters circa Doom I. No question cover systems still have a lot of rough edges (hence the clumsy distribution of chest-high walls), but Gears of War both relied less on twitch skills (good for geezers like me) and made me think far more than most shooters. Not so fond of the regeneration mechanic, but on the other hand I’ve always needed some extra help with console shooters, mainly since fast, precision control is difficult compared to mouse aiming.

Yeah, people can make fun of the series of small walls as much as they like, but the cover mechanic is the best thing to happen to shooters since online multiplayer. Love it or hate it, I would call Gears the most influential game of the generation.

Fixed.

At this point I’ll take console tards over PC snobs any day of the week.

I’ll take any spare thread that doesn’t have the same people bickering all the time in it :(

If you listen carefully you’ll note he’s complaining about how all games are like that now, regardless of whether it’s fun or make sense.

/attempts to imagine TF2 with chest-high walls and sticky cover

Yeah, I hated the chest-high wall cover system in Fallout/The Witcher/Portal/Dragon Age 2/dozens of other games that are not like that.

And if Bulletstorm has a Gears-style cover system, I certainly never used it. Then again, I would never describe Bulletstorm’s movement as slow, either, so maybe I’m not playing the same game, Yahtzee is.

Excuse me, “all first person games.” Sheesh.

And any PC snob worth his usb ports should not be playing some monkeyfied shooter game but should be studying hard on DCS A10C :P

I was wondering the same thing. I almost never took cover and I died twice in the entire game. Plus he never mentioned how you could butt slide almost forever which isn’t realistic at all. I did wish I could have carried all my weapons.

Yeah, I agree with most of his points… except that I ended up enjoying the game anyway.

Reading here how everybody played on hard to feel challenged, Yathzees complaint just had me realize that he’s the only person in the world more useless at console shooters than me (I switched to Easy in one of the latters fights).

I was going to say I’m probably a second one, but when I tried to search for some examples (other than Bulletstorm, which I haven’t played)… and I realized, reluctantly, that I’m really not that bad anymore. I managed Gears of War on Hardcore, though to be fair I did so co-op. I’m like the fat kid who lost a lot of weight but still thinks of himself as obese even though he’s only pudgy now.

This week: Killzone 3

Judging from his review the horrible controls from Killzone 2 are still present. Guess I’ll wait till it’s E10 or less.

They didn’t add a “Kill Rico As Many Times As Humanly Possible” mode so I won’t buy it until it goes cheap, either.

I would also have accepted a filter in the options that just disables the character.

Heh… could be wurst.

That was a strange one. Around the two minute mark he suddenly realises he should be speaking fast and doubles the pace.

I’ll wait for a cheaper price myself but according to real reviews, the controls were completely overhauled and are much more responsive than in KZ2. You could also simply play the demo and see for yourself…

It doesn’t. He just has mental blinders on now. He sees the name “Epic” and immediately reverts to his “chest high walls” schtick.

Controls are very different from KZ2 and feels more like all other shooters out there.
