Especially since every character will be identical on every level. No need to tediously invest 30 levels worth of points at the start of the game. Very silly decision.
Isn’t that the same thing as just starting on Normal? If you auto level the character to meet the challenge then … what’s the challenge?
The relative strength (DPS, hit points, abilities, etc) of you vs. the monsters isn’t exactly the same at lvl 1 vs. lvl 30, so different strategies are possible, required, etc.
People claim that the higher level difficulties are more interesting, so there must be something going on there.
Higher difficulties are mainly harder for two reasons:
-
mobs don’t scale linearly with you, so abilities that you can shrug off in normal become dangerous later on, like Hulking Phasebeasts, Oppressors, Heralds of Pestilence, etc. etc. In Act 4 Hell my reasonably well geared character got nearly one-shot by Oppressors teleport-attack, which can only be avoided by placing obstacles between you and them.
-
even more importantly, champions and elites gain multiple affixes. This makes a HUGE difference in how dangerous they are, beyond the simple scaling of HP/damage. On normal, you get Waller, or Jailer, or Molten, or Frozen, etc. On Nightmare, you get Molten Waller (eek). On Hell, you’re getting Molten Waller Jailer (double eek). The affixes can synergize in terrifying ways.
On Inferno, you’re getting bullshit like Fast Jailer Mortar Desecrator. Some affixes don’t show up till Hell/Inferno, like Avenger, Dampens Missiles, or Invulnerable Minions (complete bullshit).

Isn’t this what they’ve effectively done with WOW, too? Can’t you start a character at level 60 or whatever?
I played WOW for about 9 months, and never got a character past 45 (obviously I’m not a powerleveller). I remember people telling me “the game doesn’t even start until 60!”, which, ultimately, factored into my allowing my sub to lapse – if I wasn’t getting the good content, and I wasn’t going to be getting the good content for quite some time yet, there are other games I’d like to play where I can get good content right away.
Eh, if you’re a hardcore type who wants to spend hours upon hours farming for the best equipment, that’s true that WoW doesn’t start until 60 (or whatever the max level is these days). For someone like me who doesn’t care much about raiding or high level PvP and just wants to experience the world, the game essentially ends at max level.
edit: or at least it used to… I haven’t played in many years.
Dragon’s Dogma found this to pretty funny, at least I laughed out loud a thing that was becoming more uncommon watching this videos.
I still enjoy seeing them each week but as for any comedy routine even if you continue to enjoy it it’s hard to laugh at the level as you did when you discovered the first time.
That was really funny. I laughed out loud a lot on that one.
Agreed, the part about the NPCs was one of the best bits in recent memory.

This week, it’s a thoughtful look at Spec Ops: The Line.
His review made me want the game even more.
I played the demo and its pretty standard cover-based whack-a-mole. If it were something more interesting I could stomach the gameplay for the plot’s sake, but from what I experienced in the demo I just can’t do it.
That’s a damn shame, because the story really is well done. Shockingly so.

What’s the spoiler level like in the Sleeping Dogs video?
